HUDDLE UPS (OPTIONAL) Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins or a pick-up time as parents arrive at the end of the session. It s a great time for interaction with a small group leader through games, conversations, or review questions. Play the countdown video to signal the end of Huddles Ups and the beginning of the session. Estimated time: varies according to schedule Tech: none People: Small Group Leaders Supplies (for each small group): I Have Never none; Mirrored Messages mirrors, paper, markers I HAVE NEVER Welcome kids to your Huddle Up group. Invite kids to sit in a circle. Comment that today kids will learn that God made each person special and unique. Explain that kids will play a game to discover how they may be alike or different from their friends. Tell kids to hold up ten fingers. Explain that one person will begin the game by stating something they have never done (such as, I have never been to the beach or I have never eaten pineapple on my pizza. ) Kids who HAVE done that action should put down one finger. Continue around the circle, inviting each child to share something she has never done. Kids who put down all ten of their fingers are out of the game. The last person left with at least one finger up is the winner. Watch for the countdown video to signal the end of Huddle Ups. Guide your small group to join the others to begin worship. MIRRORED MESSAGES (after the session) Before the session gather a few mirrors for your group and a sheet of paper and marker for each child in the group. Explain that kids can write mirrored messages like the ones used in today s Bible story. Lead kids to use a marker to write on the piece of paper Made in God s Image. Marker should bleed through the paper and be easily visible from the reverse side. Direct kids to flip over their papers and trace the letters with their markers. Guide kids to practice holding their messages to a mirror and reading the words. Suggest that kids put the messages on or near a mirror where they will see it this week to remind them of today s lesson. COUNTDOWN VIDEO Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: Countdown Video People: none (Play countdown video to signal the beginning of worship time. Kids will count aloud as they join the large group.) 3 SONG Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: Music video, mics for singers, lights (optional) Music: Your Amazing World (lead sheet available on DVD-ROM) or download a worship song of your choice People: Worship Leader and/or Worship Team if I told you that YOU are like a mirror, reflecting God s image? It s true! We will talk all about that today as we discover God made people in His own image. (Show Life Point slide.) Say that with me: God made people in His own image. We know that God made people in His own image because the Bible tells us so! Let s look at today s Bible verse together. LEADER Welcome to worship! Are you ready to praise our great God with me? Get up on your feet and let s sing to Him! (Show the music video. Kids stand to sing.) WELCOME AND PRAYER Estimated time: 5 minutes Tech: Life Point slide, Bible Verse slide People: Bible Study Leader Props: handheld mirror BIBLE STUDY LEADER Hey, guys! I m so glad that you are here today! Are any of you good at solving riddles? I have a really great riddle today that I think might stump you. Would you like to hear it? I always have it with me, and it s always in plain view. I don t see it as easily as you. (Allow kids to guess the answer to the riddle.) The answer to the riddle is my face! It is always with me, and everyone can see it except for me! I can t look at my own face without the help of one of these. (Show mirror.) When I look in this mirror, I can see a reflection of my face. Now, you guys are smart, so you know that isn t REALLY me inside of the mirror. The mirror is simply showing me a reflection, or an image, of what I look like. Have you ever wondered what God looks like? Today we will learn that to discover more about God, all we have to do is look at some of His creation. Actually, would you believe me (Show Bible Verse slide select preferred version.) So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. Genesis 1:27 (HCSB) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27 (KJV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 (NIV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 (ESV) So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27 (NKJV) We learned last time that when God created the world, He simply spoke the words, and NOTHING became SOMETHING! But, today we will discover that God did things a bit differently when He created people. He took some extra care when He created you! God cares so much for us. Let s bow our heads together and pray to Him. God, we praise You for being the Creator of all things. We thank You that Your Word teaches us that we are made in Your image. Thank You for the special way you made each of us. As we worship together today, help us to understand what it means to be like You. In Jesus name, amen. You know, I wonder what our True2Life team (the Gumshoe kids) has to say about being created in God s image! Let s check in with them and find out! (Bible study leader leaves.) 4 TRUE2LIFE DRAMA Estimated time: 5-7 minutes Tech: Gumshoe video (optional) People: Ben and Sarah (teen-aged friends) Props: handheld mirror Ben enters speaking into a handheld mirror. He is turned slightly so his face can be seen. Ben: Ben, Ben you re the man, tell me who s fastest in the land? Right. Me! Ben, Ben you re the man, tell me who s most popular in the land? Right again. Me! Ben, Ben you re the man, tell me who s smartest in the land? You are so right. Me! Sarah enters and stares at Ben. Ben: Ben, Ben you re the man, tell me who s funniest in the land? Right. Me! Sarah: Are you sure that mirror s not broken? Ben: Hey, I m just having fun. Sarah: You know it s just a mirror, right? Ben: I know. Mirrors can t listen or talk. They just reflect. Sarah: Ben. Good word, reflect. like me. If I m smart, my teachers will like me. If I m funny well, who doesn t like a good joke? Wanna hear one? Sarah: Maybe later. But now I think I need to tell you something. Ben: Tell me what? Sarah: Ben, it doesn t matter how fast, popular, smart, or funny you are. You re fine just the way you are. Ben: Do you really believe that? Sarah: I do. But not only do I believe it, God believes it, too. Ben: (realizing the truth) He does, doesn t He? Sarah: Yes, He does. Once I heard someone say, God made you, and God don t make no junk. Ben: That s not really good grammar but it is true. Sarah: And you don t need a mirror to remind you that God made you special. (They exit.) (END SCENE) Ben: (putting his finger to his head as he recalls information) Reflect to show something, to make something known. Sarah: You ve been studying. Ben: I have. I want to do my best this year in school. Sarah: That s great, Ben. Ben: That s why I ve been looking at myself in the mirror and saying those things. I do want to be the fastest, most popular, smartest, and funniest. Sarah: Why? Ben: Because if I m fast, I ll get picked for the games and teams at school. If I m popular, the kids in my class will BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 2 4

CONNECTION POINT GAME Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Connection Point Game slide People: Connection Point Leader, 3 pairs of kids Props: 3 handheld mirrors, 3 heavy paper plates, 3-ounce paper cups, 3 chairs, timer or stopwatch GAME INSTRUCTIONS: Arrange three chairs facing the side of the stage (or sideways to the audience). Invite six kids to join you onstage and group them into pairs. Direct one child from each pair to sit in a chair and balance a plate on her head. Give her partner the handheld mirror and explain that he should hold the mirror so that his partner can see herself. Place several cups in the laps of the seated partners. Explain that they will have one minute to place and balance as many cups as they can on their plates. They may use only the mirror and their partner s verbal instructions for help. For younger children, consider making the game easier by requiring them to place and balance five cups. The first team to balance five cups is the winner. Start the timer. Declare the pair with the most cups on their plate as the winner. CONNECTION POINT LEADER (Show Connection Point Game slide.) Hi, everyone! Are you ready to have some fun? For today s game, I need six kids with great balancing skills. Who s up for a challenge? (Choose six kids and group them in pairs. Introduce the teams.) I really had fun trying to figure out our riddle earlier! Mirrors allow us to see an image of ourselves, but do you know what else mirrors can do? They can help us play super awesome games! Teams, are you ready to play Mirror Minute Mania? Here s how it works! I need one partner to sit and one partner to stand. (Help pairs choose. Instruct kids not sitting to stand in front of their partners.) Great! Now, (to the kids who are seated) I need you to balance a plate on your head. Make sure it is good and steady! (Distribute plates and allow kids to get plates balanced.) Super! Now, (to the kids who are standing) hold up your mirrors so your partners can see how stylish they look wearing plates. (Distribute mirrors.) OK, I have a job for you good-looking kids wearing the plates! I am putting some paper cups in your lap. (Distribute cups.) When I say go, your job is to place the cups on your plate and balance them so that they don t fall off! Your partner cannot touch the plate or the cups, but they can help you. Your partner will hold the mirror so that you can see yourself, and they will help talk you through the game. Is everyone ready? You have one-minute to stack your cups! The team with the most cups on its plate will be the winner! Are you ready? Get ready get set GO! (Start the timer and some fun music. Encourage kids in the audience to cheer for the teams. Declare a winner and congratulate all kids on their efforts before dismissing them to their seats.) See? I told you there were some super fun games to play with mirrors! Can you imagine trying to play that game without a mirror to help you see? Seeing an image of themselves helped the players know how high they needed to put their hands and whether the tower was leaning one way or the other. But, the players weren t just relying on the mirror s image! They also listened to the voices of their partners giving directions on what to do. In just a few minutes we will learn that being made in God s image helps us in those same ways. It helps us see things the way God does, and when we follow His directions in the Bible, it helps us make right choices. Let s spend some more time worshiping God together, and then we will explore more about what it means to be made in God s image and why that is important. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 2 5

SONG Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: Music video, mics for singers, lights (optional) Music: These Are the Names of God (lead sheet available on DVD-ROM) or download a worship song of your choice People: Worship Leader and/or Worship Team LEADER Psalm 139 tells us some amazing things about God and His relationship with us. It says that He knows everything about us: when we sit, when we stand, what we think about, and what we say. It also says that He put each of us together and had a plan for our whole lives before we were even born! Isn t that incredible? Stand with me, and let s praise God because He has made each of us in a wonderful and remarkable way! (Show the music video.) (Lead kids to sit as song ends.) BIBLE STORY Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Christ Focus, Life Point, and Bible Story slides; Bible Story video (optional) People: Bible Story Leader Props: Bible, floor length or other large mirror (handheld will work), 3 posters Write the following words in mirrored letters (1 per poster): DUST, BREATHED, RIB. (Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.) BIBLE STUDY LEADER (Show Bible Story slide.) I m curious to know if anyone used a mirror to get ready to come to church today. (Allow kids to respond.) Yes, we use mirrors almost every day! If I look into my mirror, what are some things that I might see? (Hold up mirror and allow for responses such as face, hair, eyes, and so forth.) Do any of you remember hearing a fairytale about a queen who would gaze into her mirror every day and ask Who is the fairest of them all? The queen wanted to know that she was the most beautiful in all the land. There are just a couple of problems to this story: a fairytale is not real, and a mirror will only show you an image of the OUTSIDE. You can t use a mirror and see all the wonderful ways God created you on the inside, can you? A mirror won t show you a person s kindness or honesty or courage. Those are the things that really make us who we are. They shape our character and our personality. Today we will discover that when God created us, He made us in a very special way in His image! Now, before we get too far, we need to back up and remember what we learned last week. You ll remember that we talked all about God s creation and the world He created for us. Do you recall what God created on day one? (Walk through each day of creation, allowing kids to respond and helping them if they cannot recall the information.) Great job, everyone! Today we will focus on day six of creation when God made people. We already know from today s Bible verse that God made people in His image, so let s find out what that means! Let s begin reading in Genesis to find out! (Open Bible and read Genesis 2:7.) Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being. Does anyone remember from last week how God created light and dark? (He spoke.) How did God create the fish and birds? (He spoke.) And how did God create the land and the animals? (He spoke.) When God created all of nature, He simply spoke the words, and NOTHING became SOMETHING! But, that s not how God chose to create people. (Hold up DUST poster.) I have a poster here that tells me what God used to make man, but it doesn t make much sense! I need a friend to come help me out. (Invite a child to join you on stage and hold the mirror in front of the DUST poster so that it can be read.) That looks better! What word do you see in our mirror? DUST! (Dismiss child to his seat.) BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 2 6

When God made man, God didn t just speak and man appeared. When God made man, God did it in a special way by using the DUST from the earth. God formed the man from dust and then did something else very special to bring the man to life. Can I have another helper? (Hold up the BREATHED poster and invite another child to join you.) Would you please hold this mirror to our poster to discover the special way God brought man to life? (Guide the child to read the word: BREATHED.) What word do you see? The Bible says that God BREATHED into the man s nose, and the man became a living person! (Dismiss child to his seat.) After God created man, He put him in the garden of Eden and gave him the job of taking care of it and naming the animals. But, God knew that the man didn t need to be alone, so God created a woman. (Read Genesis 2:21-22.) So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. Then the LORD God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. God didn t use dust to create woman. I need one more friend to help me out. (Hold up the RIB poster. Invite a child to join you on stage and use the mirror to read the RIB poster.) What word did you discover? God created woman by using a RIB that He took out of the man. God put the woman in the garden to be the man s helper. (Dismiss child to his seat.) God made us different from the rest of creation. He took special care to form us in His image. When God made us in His image, that obviously doesn t mean He made us all look the same on the outside. Some of us have dark skin; some have red hair; and others have brown eyes. But, He did make us all in His image on the inside! He made us to love, to worship, to forgive, and to be kind. All of those are ways we know God acts, too. God made us to be like Him! That makes each of us very special! (Show Christ Focus slide.) Why do you think God made people differently from everything else? God wanted us to be able to love and worship Him. He wanted to have a relationship with us. The problem is that we don t perfectly reflect God s image. Sometimes we make bad choices and disobey God. Those bad choices are called sin. That s the whole reason that God sent Jesus! God wanted to provide a way for our sins to be forgiven so that we could have a relationship with Him just like He created us to do! Let s pray together. God, thank You for making us in Your image. Thank You for making us differently than the birds, the fish, and the animals so that we can have a relationship with You. God, help us to be more like You so that we reflect Your image more and more. We love You, God! In Jesus name, amen. SONG AND OFFERING Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: mics for singers, lights (optional) Music: Use a favorite song or download a worship song of your choice. People: Worship Leader and/or Worship Team LEADER To be made in God s image means that we are created to be like Him. We can be like Him in how we act, how we think, and how we treat others. God made us in His image so that we could love and worship Him. Let s sing together and worship Him right now. Optional Giving Segment: We know from our Bible that God is a giver! In fact, He gave His only Son for us. One way you can reflect God s image is to be a giver, too. You can do that today by sharing an offering. If you would like to give an offering today, (Give your own directions for how the kids can give their offerings. You might consider collecting the offering in a container wrapped in reflective tape or paper as a reminder of today s point.) (After collecting the offering, guide kids to stand for remainder of worship song.) BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 2 7

Say the verse several times as a group, following the game instructions.) You guys did great! Let s say the whole verse together one more time! CONNECTION POINT MISSIONS Estimated time: 5-8 minutes Tech: Connection Point Missions slide, Musicianary missions video People: Connection Point leader CONNECTION POINT LEADER (Show Connection Point Missions slide.) God made everyone in His image! That means it doesn t matter what country you live in, what color your skin may be, or what language you speak. God has made us all special, and He wants to have a relationship with all people. Today, we will hear about missionary Sean Michel and discover how he is using the special talent that God gave him to tell people in South Africa about Jesus. (Play the Musicianary missions video.) Sean Michel is sharing Jesus in a really cool way! God created Sean to be a musician, and Sean is using that gift to tell people in South Africa the good news about Jesus. What special talents did God create in YOU, and how could you use the special way God made you to tell others about Jesus? (Allow for responses, encouraging kids to think about how they are each uniquely gifted to share the gospel with others.) Each of us show by our actions, just exactly who BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 2 8

God made us to be. Will you tell others about being made in the image of God? Let s pray together. God, thank You for Sean Michel and for the awesome way he uses his talent to serve You. Please continue to send more workers to South Africa so many more people can hear the good news about Jesus. Help us to tell others about Jesus, right here at home, at school, and in our communities. Give us the courage to tell someone about You this week. In Jesus name, amen. God made people in His own image. (Show Life Point slide.) Let s say that together: God made people in His own image. Next week we will learn more about God s creation and His plan for people, so bring a friend with you! And, as you leave today, grab your One Conversation page! It will help you talk to your family about what you ve learned today! See you next time! REAL LIFE CONNECTIONS Estimated time: 3-5 minutes Tech: Real Life Connections slide, Life Point slide, microphone to take to individuals in group People: Bible Study Leader BIBLE STUDY LEADER (Show Real Life Connections slide.) Looking in my mirror shows me how God made me look on the outside, but it doesn t reflect all the ways that God made me to be like Him. What are some words that you can think of to describe God? (Invite some kids to offer suggestions in the microphone such as loving, kind, giving, fair, holy, and so forth.) All of those are great words to describe God! We should want to act in those same ways. This week I want us all to think about what it means to be made in God s image. To help you think, I will read some situations, and I want you guys to tell me a reaction that would reflect God s image. Ready? (Read the following suggested situations or make up your own. Invite kids to speak into the microphone to share their answers.) Your soccer team loses the tournament because your teammate missed the final goal. You can reflect God s image by Dad promised to take you to the zoo, but you know he isn t feeling well. You can reflect God s image by Someone is saying unkind things about you. 10 TM Unit 1 Session 2 THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child heard that God has a plan for the people He created. God created people in His image, and people are His most special creation. How does your family respond to being created in God s image? KIDS CREATION LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God created people in His image. GOD S PLAN FOR PEOPLE God created a man out of the dust of the ground. God breathed life into the man, and he became a living being. God made the man in His Own image. God planted a garden in Eden, and He made every tree to grow in the garden. Some trees were beautiful and some trees supplied food. A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the start of four other rivers. LIVE IT OUT: Discuss with your child what the phrase in God s image means. What about the creation of people was different from all other things God created? List some characteristics your child has that are special only to her. DAILY BIBLE READING: Sunday: John 1:3 Monday: 1 Timothy 2:13 Tuesday: Genesis 5:1 Wednesday: Genesis 5:2 Thursday: Isaiah 43:7 Friday: Luke 19:10 Saturday: 1 Timothy 1:15 BIBLE VERSE Genesis 1:27 God took the man He created and placed him in the garden. God planned for the man to work in the garden and to watch over it. God told him that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for one. God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone. He decided to make the man a helper. God brought all of the animals of the ground and the birds of the sky to the man. The man named all of the animals and birds. But none of them could be the man s helper. God caused the man to fall asleep. God took one of the man s ribs and closed the man s skin. Then God made the rib from the man into a woman. God took the woman to the man. The man said, This is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.
