1 October 2016 Kemptown Providence United Methodist Church 3716 Kemptown Church Road Monrovia, MD Pastor DD Adams Jake Beveridge, Youth Director, Sharon Warfield, Music Director Patty Spitler, Secretary, Greetings brothers and sisters in the Lord! John Wesley said he looked upon the world as his parish. He traveled many miles and assessed he had traveled as many as 4,500 miles a year. John preached a lot of places. When he traveled to Bristol with Whitefield he preached to the miners of Kingswood. Kingswood was close in proximity to the port in Bristol, and it was in the area that was chiefly occupied by coalminers men, women, and children. They worked and lived in terrible conditions. A revival broke out in that area of Kingswood, and it lasted fifty years! Wesley preached in prisons, standing on tombstones, amphitheaters, inns, on ships, in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Georgia. John wanted desperately for the world to hear the good news of God s saving power. He had a global perspective when it came to preaching! He was willing to go anywhere in the world and understood that God was not a respecter of persons. Wesley also believed in education for everyone. World Communion Sunday is one of the special Sundays authorized by the General Conference to be observed with the taking of an offering throughout the denomination. World Communion Sunday is observed the first Sunday in October. The observance focuses the attention of United Methodists on the universal and inclusive nature of the church. One half of the proceeds from the offering is for World Communion Sunday Scholars administered by the General Board of Global Ministries. The remaining one half is to be used for the Ethnic for the Ethnic Scholarship Program and the Ethnic In-Service Training Program, which are administered by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (Taken from umc.org). 4 A Statement from Bishop LaTrelle Easterling Save me, God, because the waters have reached my neck! I have sunk into deep mud. My feet can't touch the bottom! I have entered deep water; the flood has swept me up. I am tired of crying. My throat is hoarse. My eyes are exhausted with waiting for my God. Psalm 69:1-3 This psalm, this lament, is offered as a communal cry in the wake of metaphorical as well as literal suffering. The psalmist pleads for the innocent to be saved from unjust circumstances. The writer is weary, tired of crying and hoarse from crying out for justice, justice, justice. Yet, the ultimate plea is not for personal retribution, but for public vindication of God's justice. The psalmist does not lose hope, but trusts that God will have the last word. In the wake of another police shooting, reports of racism and bullying on the campus of American University, and the Washington Post reporting that flyers from the Ku Klux Klan are being distributed from "California to Kansas to New Jersey," Psalm 69 could have been written today. While in each situation the circumstances are different, what is constant is the racism, bias, and disregard for the lives of people of color. This evil has become all too common. How many videos do we need of unarmed men of color being shot in the street before we recognize that immediate action is needed? And, while many argue that we should not question the actions of law enforcement officers who must make split second decisions, the question remains how a terror suspect can be taken into custody with non-life threatening wounds, while a man stranded with a disabled vehicle is tazed and killed. During our Northeast Jurisdictional Conference in July, delegates adopted a resolution calling for the church to do more to eradicate racism and injustice, and to acknowledge that all lives, including Black lives, matter to God. This Call to Action also admitted that The United Methodist Church has not done enough in this effort. We collectively repented, accepted responsibility, and pledged to take specific action. The resolution calls us to a sense of urgency -- and that sense of urgency is even more tangible and palpable as blood once again stains the street and students don't feel safe on campus. As we are discerning our way forward, we cannot be silent. We cannot wait for yet another board or committee or task force to direct our actions. We must act today, and today is now! Today we can pray; today we can have conversations in our congregations about race and race relations in our country and communities; today we can engage with our first responders about their approach to community relations; today we can be in conversation with students about feeling safe at school and in their neighborhoods; today we can begin to understand systemic inequities and how we can dismantle them; today we can acknowledge privilege, and use that privilege to confront discrimination; today we can make it known that we will not be silent in the face of hate. As your new episcopal leader, I am painfully aware that the issue of race and race relations is not an easy conversation. And yet, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we are called to care for one another, and to confront evil in all its forms. Though the work will not be easy, we join the psalmist in knowing that God will have the last word!

Checks should be made payable to: CWS/CROP. You can also mail your contribution to our Financial Secretary, Julie Thompson, 3637 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, Md Church World Service sponsors CROP. 8 PLEASE SUPPORT THE CHURCH IN OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR Scout Sunday My two cents - By Scoutmaster, Randy Kraft First and foremost I want to thank each and every member of Providence United Methodist Church for allowing our troop to share God s mission as one voice. The relationship we have shared with this church and the members over the many years has truly been a Godsend. I always have people coming up to me all the time to thank me for the scouts.. it s not me I tell them.. it s all them. They want to do it. You should be proud of your scouts are comments I often hear. My reply is.. proud? Yes, very proud!! How does one describe the feeling you have when you see these young men taking part in a religious service? It has to be one of those moments where we all feel a little bit more comfortable with the next upcoming generation. [a bit eye opening, isn t it?] But, this has been that way for past generations and many more to come. I stood in the back of the church and watched as each scout did their part of the service. They did it because a scout when called to serve whatever the task, he does for the good of the community. He does it as an investment on a much grander scale. Scouting has come a long way since it was introduced to this country. It was founded by the same principle we all know it today helping others. I m extremely proud to be a part of Troop1023. I joined this troop with my son in 2004 and became their Scoutmaster in My son reached the rank of Eagle in 2012 and has since aged out and moved on in the world. I stayed on as the scoutmaster mainly because I think I found my calling to help guide and inspire these young men. To better prepare them for what might come their way. Be prepared Hmmm where have we heard this before? If you have been in boys scouts, no doubt you heard it here If you attend Church, you have heard it here too. Hmmm.. it seems like someone is trying to tell you something. Things always go better when we prepare for it ahead of time. I could go into more of this, but that might start to become a sermon and I think I will leave that in Pastor DD Adams very capable hands on Sundays. I thank each and everyone that has supported this troop in the past, present and going into the future! Please be sure that when you do something for someone and they want to repay you, ask them to go and do something for someone else. Keep paying it forward. The results ARE amazing Below I have shared with all of you a message to read. In Boy Scouts it is called a Scoutmaster s Minute. It is normally read at the end of a troop meeting with the purpose to have the scouts as well as the adults leave the meeting inspired. You might call it a sermon, scouting style. Enjoy! Scouting is one s self investment that pays lifelong dividends! Randy Kraft, Scoutmaster - Troop Scoutmaster s Minute A very wise Indian Chief was discussing life with some young boys. He said, "A battle rages inside me between two wolves. One wolf is anger, envy, sorrow, fear, greed, arrogance, lies, regret, and self-pity. The other wolf is joy, peace, hope, humility, kindness, generosity, truth, and faith." He said, "This same battle goes on inside everyone, even each of you." After a minute, one boy asked, "Which wolf will win?" The very wise Indian Chief replied, "The one you feed."

9 ALZHEIMER S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER S FREDERICK FAIRGROUNDS - October 16, 2016 Registration 1 p.m. Walk 2 p.m. KATHY SIGGINS TEAM HOPE siggimax@mindspring.com Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors: On October 16, my family and I will walk in our 23rd Walk to End Alzheimer's in memory of my late husband. Gene was 57 when I began noticing something was wrong. In 1988, dementia forced him into early retirement and in 1990 he underwent extensive testing at the NIH and received the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. I spent a decade watching him slowly slip away until his death on January 24, As a former caregiver and participant in 22 walks, the money that we have raised together has contributed directly to the expansion of services that were not available to me when I was caring for my late husband. This is why I continue to walk. If you would like to sponsor me in the Walk, please make your check payable to the Alzheimer s Association and mail to my attention at: Purdum Court, Mount Airy, MD Since funds are turned in prior to the walk, please mail to arrive by October 11 th if possible, and please know that all donations for the Walk are tax-deductible as charitable contributions. Donations can also be made on my personal webpage by visiting:
