OUR UNIFORM SHOP OPEN TUESDAY MORNINGS am THIS SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, Sir, we would like to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it and will glorify it again. The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, An angel has spoken to him. Jesus answered and said, This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself. He said this indicating the kind of death he would die. John 12: ASK FATHER JOE Parish-School Family Mass It is good to see several families and St John Bosco School students at the Parish-School Mass, which usually takes place on the third Sunday of the month at 10 am. These celebrations are well-prepared thanks to Mrs Catherine Birchmore, the staff, as well as our parishioners, altar servers, and guest musicians and singers. The Parish looks forward to your involvement and for more families to come. As we indicated in the letter, the 2015 Sacramental Program will be starting soon. The Sacraments we prepare for are Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. Archbishop Philip Wilson usually administers the Sacrament of Confirmation. For our parish it is generally in Term 3. The Sacrament of Eucharist as First Holy Communion follows Confirmation at the Parish Mass. This year, these two Sacraments will be celebrated at St John Bosco Church. We expect that preparation for First Reconciliation will be at Tenison Woods Catholic School and St Aloysius Church Richmond. This will be most likely in Term 2. If you are thinking of enrolling your child in any of these Sacraments, we expect that candidates for the sacraments will be regular contributors to the Parish/School Masses. This is because the Sacraments are all celebrations of the Christian community. In the Catholic tradition, the community gathers on Sunday to give thanks and worship to God. 3 RE NEWS Yesterday at Assembly I spoke with the students about the terrible situation in Vanuatu over the week end with Cyclone Pam. Not only have families lost all their possessions and their houses, but it was reported that all schools have been severely damaged or totally destroyed. I reminded them that when they support Project Compassion through their various class fundraising activities, and also their own donation boxes at home, then they are supporting third world countries like Vanuatu that experience these terrible natural disasters. Caritas (Project Compassion) already has people working in Vanuatu and sent this report: Caritas Australia Pacific Programs Manager, Stephanie Lalor, notes, We are particularly concerned for the outer islands and communities that we have not yet been able to establish communications with. Although power has been restored to the capital, this is not stable and is not across the whole nation. It is expected other provinces will also require emergency response once assessment teams reach them and needs assessments have been carried out. Early assessments indicate that up to 90% of structures have been damaged or destroyed on the main island, Efate. Water has been restored to the capital this morning but it is not safe for drinking. HARMONY DAY This Saturday is National Harmony Day. Harmony Day is held every year on 21st March to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs. It s a day to celebrate Australia s diversity a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. There are some fascinating statistics about Australia s diversity - Did you know: Around 45 per cent of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was. 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia. Apart from English the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Tagalog/Filipino, Spanish and Hindi. More than 60 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia 92 per cent of Australians feel a great sense of belonging to our country? 4 NEWS FROM AROUND OUR SCHOOL OFFICE HOURS: Please be aware the school office hours are 8.30am pm Daily. Each Wednesday morning from 9.00am pm the office will be closed for Administration purposes. Our Answering machine will be monitored during this time and we will return your call. STUDENT ABSENTEES: If your child/ren is absent from school please ensure you ring the School Office from 7.30am 9.30am. All students must be accounted for each day. It is a requirement and duty of care to record all absentees regardless of the reason. Please call STUDENT AWARDS At our Assembly students receive special awards. Awards are recognition of student achievements as identified by members of staff. Congratulations to: R-AL Sunny for being more confident when following instructions and completing activities. Connie for becoming more confident in class by taking risks, offering to help others and joining in conversations. R-GB Mahi for working and playing with others in a nice way. 1-2 EH John for enthusiasm towards reading. Jack for a positive attitude and consistent effort towards all learning tasks. Rebecca for confidence and co-operation skills when performing a puppet show. 1-2CS Lauren for always doing her very best work. Senja for trying hard to write stories on her own. Pamela being caring and a great helper to other class members. Mason for working well with other students during Read to Someone Time. 1-2KB Isaac Confidence Award always trying your very best and attempting all given tasks independently. Elijah Working with confidence during Mathematics lessons and group counting. Rose Working with confidence during Mathematics lessons and group counting. Christian working with confidence during Mathematics lessons and finding patterns in numbers. 3-4 MB Sebastian - For his concentration he applies to all learning tasks. Olivia - For persevering at her addition sums and achieving good accuracy. Sebastian - For being an active group member during Guided Reading. 3-4TV Chiara - Persistence Award for working with effort to produce a creative, descriptive and entertaining narrative. Cooper - Persistence Award for using various reading strategies whilst reading, to maintain meaning of the text. Archie - Getting Along Award for being a caring classmate who is thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of others. 4-5SG Xin Tong - who demonstrated excellent leadership qualities and independence at the Year 5 camp. Patrick - who demonstrated persistence, got along with others and was always willing to lend a hand during the Year 5 camp. William - who demonstrated resilience, by bouncing back when challenges got tough at the Year 5 camp. 4-5GH Angelina encouraging others to do their best and being a supportive friend at camp. Stephnaie for being resilient on camp and participating in all the activities. Lucas participating in all camp activities to the best of his ability. 6-7FZ Selbee - For problem solving and showing persistence whilst collaborating on her class prayer. Danny - For demonstrating persistence in trying his best and for asking for clarification when required. Riley - For constantly staying on task during self directed learning. Cristian - For reviewing his work and seeking ways to improve his learning. Jacob - For demonstrating outstanding leadership qualities when participating and leading whole school morning fitness. 6-7GC Helen - For always staying focussed during class time. Hana - For always presenting her work to a high standard. Tate - For setting a good example to the younger students.

5 FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE The Bunnings BBQ MILE END is this Saturday 21st March. Help is still urgently needed. 7 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students, Staff and Friends of St John Bosco School, Last week I had the opportunity to spend the day with the Year 5 students at their Camp The Woodhouse Activity Centre. I was thrilled to see the willingness of all students to have a go at new and challenging experiences and the engagement of the students in the prepared activities. The most challenging activity of all was the Flying Fox The students had to climb ladders to a platform, be fitted with a safety harness and then have the courage to move over the edge for their thrilling ride. The students showed amazing skills of resilience in completing this activity. The resilient behaviours I clearly observed were: students giving things a go and trying their hardest, setting goals and achieving them, being strong and brave in their mindset, coping with a challenging situation, being optimistic and making positive statements, having a sense of community and good friendships, developing their problem solving abilities. These skills support students with their learning at school but also in their daily lives. My sincere thanks go to Viviana Graney, Nicki Sharrad and Anthony Sicari for their organisation and participation in this Camp and for building the resilience skills of the Year Five students over the three day camping experience. I know the teachers also worked on their resilience skills and participated in the Flying Fox activity, so a great time was had by all! This week we have also had our students participate in the Catholic School s Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to all the students who participated and who achieved their best in the events. All students did a fantastic job of representing the St John Bosco Community and showed great sportsmanship. A big thank you too, to Dino Zandona for his coordination and participation in this event as it would not be possible without his work. The other wonderful news is that we finished in first place. It has been wonderful to see so many of you at Parent/Teacher Interviews this week taking the opportunity to work in partnership with teachers. This partnership is truly valued by teachers and is of great benefit to your child s education. Best Wishes, Erika COMMONWEALTH BANK SCHOOL VISIT Yesterday at Assembly we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Commonwealth Bank to talk about the School Banking Program. Our special visitor was Pat the Dog!! The children were very excited to see him. If you would like more information about the School Banking Program please contact the School Office.
