1 The Courier October 2011 St. Jacob's Evangelical Lutheran Church 99 East George Street P.O. Box 216 York New Salem, PA Web Page: stjacobsluthyns.com Rev. Lisa Hair (home) (cell) Revs. John G. Bernheisel & Marshall H. Gante Pastors Emeriti Marcy Winters, Organist/Choir Director Heather Van Dyke, Church Secretary Mission Statement of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church is to: Believe in God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all the world Grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God Serve others in love through Christ Pastor's Message I ve been thinking a lot lately about habits. It s true, isn t it, that some habits are hard to break just ask anyone who has tried to quit smoking, or drinking, or nail-biting or even any child who has tried to stop sucking a thumb! But there are some habits that we should be working hard to establish, or to keep. Luke tells us that Jesus earthly family went to Jerusalem every year at the time of the Passover, as was the custom of the feast. Years later when He visited Nazareth, Jesus attended the local synagogue on the Sabbath "as His custom was." For Him it was the most natural thing to do, and so He did it. It was His custom. Regular church attendance, Sunday School attendance, prayer, Bible study, and service to others are all habits that every Christian should be sure to keep, because they keep us near to God and remind us often of His promises in Jesus Christ. When we break these good habits, our spiritual life can really suffer. Because once these kind 1

2 of habits are broken, they can easily be replaced by the habits of nonattendance, nonfellowship, self-centeredness, and a dwindling source of spiritual nourishment. And in that direction, ultimately, lies spiritual sickness and death. So as we begin our next 150 years at St. Jacob s, and as we are now into a brand new year of Sunday School and worship, let s take a long look at our habits, and how they affect our spiritual life. Maybe make some pre-new- Year's resolutions: Resolve to attend not only worship, but Sunday School as well; and resolve to attend weekly! Resolve to make prayer and Bible Study a daily habit; resolve to find a way to serve others with the love of Jesus; and resolve to support the church with time, talent and possessions. Because those who worship, hear God s Word regularly and give of themselves find that one good habit leads to another! MEMBER UPDATE Pastor's & Members of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church: I will be moving back to Maryland on Thursday, September 15, 2011 and will truly miss my membership at St. Jacob's Church. Everyone has always been so friendly and kind quite like a big happy family. Sorry I haven't been able to attend more, but this year has been a difficult one. I have faith and trust in the Lord and I know he has been with me and I believe He always will. May the Lord Jesus keep you all in his tender care. Yours in Christ, Janet Pierson CORRECTION TO THE DIRECTORY: Betty Grove Phone Number: Connie Livingston address: cjliving@localnet.com Janet Pierson New address: 8820 Walther Blvd, Apt #1403 Baltimore, MD Expressions of Gratitude MEMORIALS FOR LOUISE ROSER: MEMORIAL FUND Dale & Delores Brillhart Philip & Shelva Gise Richard & Betty Myers Mr. & Mrs. Randy Mummert Marie D. Roser STAINED GLASS WINDOW FUND Larry & Joan Metzger THANK YOU FROM: LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES Please convey our appreciation to your Church Council for the generous support we recently received from the congregation of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church. Your gift of $69.00 will be used as you requested: $34.50 for The Village at Kelly Drive and $34.50 for The Village at Sprenkle Drive. FREE WILL OFFERING We will be taking a free will offering on Sunday, October 2, 2011, for the Lutheran World Relief. Thank you for your support. Lutheran World Relief has selected a new tag line - "Sustainable Development/Lasting Promise." As they work to assist some of the more than one billion people who live on less than $1.25 a day, the development portion of their work is very necessary to bring lasting promise. The development often follows relief efforts. Some examples given were of a crab-fattening business started for a woman after the tsunami; about malaria prevention in Tanzania that not only saves lives, but allows parents to work; about a program to teach yogurt making in Burkina Faso; and about what our quilts and kits mean to recipients. Another example is of a child that received a school kit and was so excited to have his own spiral notebook and pencils, which he had to share with his brother in the past. This is significantly better than the equivalent 8 month deficits the prior 3 years which were: $6,246; $7,195; and $5,131. This year's good performance so far has resulted from good cost control, increased investment income and support from fundraisers. Nails in Jesus Christ's hands will Produce salvation for the entire world. As you see now, it depends whose hands it's in. So put your concerns, your worries, your fears, your hopes, your dreams, your families and your relationships in God's hands because... BIOGRAPHY OF KATIE LUTHER Katie Luther was born on January 29, 1499 in Hirschfeld (near Meissen, Saxony), the daughter of an impoverished noble. In 1504 she attended the convent school of Benedict order in Brehna (near Halle); and in 1508 she entered the convent in Nibschen (near Torgau). Katharina made her vows and became a nun in After studying the teachings of Martin Luther, she and a number of other nuns became disillusioned with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and fled the convent on Easter Eve in Her life took a very different direction upon her arrival in Wittenberg. She worked for a local family as a receptionist and governess, and she continued to take classes at the university. Katharina fell in love with Hicronymus (Jerome) Baumgaertner who was also a student and the son of a Nuernberg patrician family. They planned to get married, but his parents disapproved of their union and called him home. Katharina never saw him again. After many other attempts at matchmaking failed, Martin Luther, himself, proposed marriage. They were married on June 13, Martin, a 42-year-old ex-monk, and Katharina, a 26-year-old ex-nun. In addition to bearing their six children, Katharina also managed all their household affairs and acquired many plots of land. Martin and Katharina had a powerful relationship as man and wife, as parents of their own children, and as guardians of 100's of students and orphans. She fled from the Smalkaldian War 1546 to Dessau and then to Magdeburg. Katharina died a month short of her 54th birthday in Torgau after being injured in a wagon accident. She was fleeing another outbreak of the plague in Wittenberg. Her last words were a great testament to her powerful faith in God: "I shall cling to Christ as a burr clings to a coat." 5
