RINITY TIMES JUNE 2016 Trinity Episcopal Church Trinity Episcopal Church 484 Lime Rock Rd. Lakeville, CT Telephone: STORIES YOU NEVER KNEW WERE IN THE BIBLE Office Hours: Wed. Sat. 9 am noon The Reverend Heidi Truax Rector Randy Orzano Senior Warden Pari Forood Junior Warden Danielle A. Gaherty Clerk John Oler Treasurer Bev Becker Assistant Treasurer Christine Gevert Organist/Choir Director Taylor Neil Youth Ministries In the month of June, Sunday readings will feature stories from the Bible that are usually not heard in church. Some of these stories are deemed too unseemly for Sunday morning congregations, and some are just plain difficult to understand. When I was ordained I had to confirm that I believed that the Old and New Testaments contained everything needed for our spiritual life. Bishop Wilfrido Ramos Orench asked, and I responded that I did so believe. I then signed a declaration in the sight of all present saying, I do solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God and to contain all things necessary to salvation. And, at the same time, there s an unwritten understanding that the Bible contains a lot more than just what we need for salvation. The Bible also has stories that make me wonder what God is doing, and how we are to Geoff Brown, Verger interpret the Word. Lisa Brennan, Bookkeeper Jeff Silvernale, Grounds Esperanza Nuñez, Sexton The stories you and I will hear and contemplate in June Alexis Dorf, Trinity Times will perhaps test your faith. They will surely increase 1
your knowledge and understanding of the Bible. God has been present in our world throughout history; through the bad and the good that we do. God s prophets have tried to steer us back to what is right and holy, and ultimately, God s son Jesus has shown us that we can be as close to God as we wish to be through the Holy Spirit, for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (John 16:27) Let s dive in! CAN TRINITY MEET THE CHALLENGE? Parishioner Ted Somerville has made a gift for the repair of the organ and challenges other parishioners to raise $1,000 which he will match to complete the repair funding. Please note organ fund on your check, or designate music fund as the recipient if you donate on our website. THANKS! Thanks to all who made sandwiches and sweets as well as donating fruit and beverages to the Outreach Ministry s New York Cycle Club lunch sale! The NYCC is one of many organizations to whom we offer Companionship Along the Way each year, and they are most appreciative of our hospitality. And we are most appreciative of their spending money with us! JURIED ART SHOW CONTINUES AT THE GALLERY The late Spring Juried Art Show continues through June 5. With busy days for all of us as we move into summer, stopping in to enjoy the exhibit is a welcome break for both body and soul! ARE YOU BAD AT BEING GOOD? Most of us are pretty good at reciting the doctrines of our faith tradition, but like St. Paul, we often find we have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done (BCP Morning Prayer I ). Sound like you? Sure sounds like me! The Tuesday Evening Book Group will meet on Tuesday, June 12 at 7 PM to discuss J. Brent Bill s Life Lessons from a Bad Quaker: A Humble Stumble Toward Simplicity and Grace. Putting his belief into practice is the issue for him, says the author, and he shares his efforts at being a good not perfect! - Christian. Read the book (or not!) and join us! Alexis Dorf for more info. 2
Speaking of food.tired of cooking? Of course you are! Then you ll love attending the monthly spaghetti dinners at Pilgrim House! The third Friday of the month at 5 PM is the time, and Granite Ave. in Canaan is the place. The livin may be easy in summertime, but the bills still need to be paid! Please remember to stay current on your pledge during the summer holidays. Lying on the beach and remember you forgot? Easy! Go to the Trinity website and donate through the button to our general operating expenses. Done! ARTISAN SALE! BAKE SALE! It doesn t get any better than this! A group of artisans organized by Jane and Jimmy Lipton will hold a show and sale on Saturday June 18 from 10 AM to 3 PM. The show will continue Sunday, June 19 starting at noon. AND...not only can you enjoy the creative endeavors of our local artisans, BUT ALSO the creative endeavors of Trinity bakers, famous throughout the region (of Trinity Church) for their cookies, pies, brownies and other baked goods. What s not to like? See you then! MANGIA! La Cucina (that s Italian for kitchen) opens at 5 PM, but if you d like to be in the prep line or the set up team, 4 PM is the time to come. Buon Appetito! WHATEVER YOU HAVE DONE FOR OTHERS. With all the wonderful foods available from the farmers markets in the summer, we sometimes forget that not everyone eats as well as most of us do. The Corner Food Pantry food item for June is Juice real juice not juice flavored or juice drink or juice punch. The real thing, with a minimum of added sweeteners! Your donation may be added to the food basket by the Baptismal Font at any time. Although school vacation is welcomed by students (and sometimes parents!), it is an added strain on the family food budget for many, as the children will be eating three meals a day at home. Please be generous with your donation! 3
Celebrate World Refugee Sunday, June 19 In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly established June 20 as World Refugee Day to recognize and celebrate the contribution of refugees throughout the world and to raise awareness about the growing refugee crisis. Here at Trinity Lime Rock we will observe World Refugee Day on Sunday, June 19. There are nearly 60 million refugees, internally displaced people and asylum seekers worldwide the largest number since World War II In just the past four years, more than 4 million Syrians have fled the violence in their country. More than 50% of refugees are under 18 years old. This year the Episcopal Church, in partnership with our network of 390 local affiliate offices, will welcome more than 5,000 refugees to the United States from countries across the globe places like Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma, Afghanistan, and Syria. To make this happen, Episcopalians work together with community leaders, local businesses and organizations to make sure every refugee has the warm welcome, food, housing, and support they need to make a new start. How will we at Trinity Lime Rock share in this church-wide effort to welcome and support refugees who are literally on the way to Connecticut and elsewhere right now? We will begin to explore this opportunity together on Sunday morning, June 19. For further information before then you may contact Pastor Heidi or Bob Hoskins. 4
OUTGROWN? NO LONGER IN STYLE? NOT REALLY YOU? Some folks are happy to have any clothes and shoes at all, even if they are not au courant. Please leave your no longer needed clothing items in the box in the former choir vesting area. No underwear or socks please, unless they are in new, unopened packages. Items other than clothing should go to the Bargain Barn or the Transfer Station, as Women s Support Services will accept only clothing for women, men and children. OUTTA HERE! Pastor Heidi will be on vacation from June 27 until July 19. On July 3 and 17 we will have Morning Prayer at 8 and 10:30, led by parishioners who have been trained in leading worship services. On July 10 The Rev. Sherry Hardwick Thomas, who was our temporary interim while Pastor Heidi was on Sabbatical, will preach and celebrate at both services. We look forward to welcoming Pastor Sherry back to Trinity! As part of the ECCT reorganization, the Episcopal parishes of Connecticut have been divided into regions. Not surprisingly, we are assigned to the Northwest group. The first meeting will be held on June 24 and 25 at Camp Washington. At that time, leaders for the group will be chosen and a missioner for our area will be selected. Anyone may attend just sign up on line! How we will cooperate with other parishes and what missions we will undertake will start to be discerned at that time, so for folks who want to be in on the decision making processes of the ECCT, this is your chance! More info from Pastor Heidi. THOUGHTS FROM THE TRACTOR How do we bridge the budget deficit? How do we get more people to come to church? How do we attract families with young children? These are but a few of the questions we at Trinity routinely ask ourselves. But are we asking the right questions? Perhaps, returning to our mission statement Trinity Church Offers Companionship along the Way we should be asking how do we offer Companionship along the Way? Participating in the mission of the church restoring people to one another and to God doesn t have a lot to do with budgets and the Average 5
TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 484 LIME ROCK RD. LAKEVILLE, CT ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED TRINITY TIMES JUNE 2016 Sunday Attendance. Much communication today is done via social media Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all the other ones I have never even heard of. But how much communication back and forth really goes on there? I can post what I think about an issue and folks may respond to the post, but how deeply can such interaction go? I can have 653 friends on Facebook, but how much time do I really spend with all 653 of them, keeping up with their joys and their challenges, their concerns and their celebrations? How often do I talk with them face to face (and I am not referring to FaceTime or Skype here!) A faith community can offer the opportunity to interact one-one-one, face to face, eye to eye, comforting hand on slumped shoulder. It can be a place to be seen and to be heard in word, expression and body language. Many folks today yearn for such a place to be seen and heard in real time and real place with real not virtual - people. A place to ask the questions and seek the answers that we cannot find in our secular lives. A place of growth, healing and restoration. A place where we are accepted just as we are no pre-stain treatment required! Perhaps how can Trinity be that place where those needs can be met for our neighbors? is the question we really should be asking. If we can answer that question, the resolution of other issues might follow. Alexis Dorf 6
