Opening Acclamation: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Holy God, Holy and Mighty Trisagion NEW PLAINSONG The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please sit First Reading Micah 5:2-5a A Reading from the Book of Micah You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. 3

4 And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. Hear what the spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Hymn 438 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord WOODLANDS Gospel Luke 1:39-45(46-55) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, Lord Christ. In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." [And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."] The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please Sit Sermon Please stand Nicene Creed (sung by all) We believe in God the Father, God Almighty by whose plan Earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Savior, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came. The Rev. Dr. Roger Ferlo Senior Pastor in Residence HYMN TO JOY Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven s king to rule and reign, to the Father s side ascended til as judge he comes again. We believe in God the Spirit; in one church, below, above; saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Savior, Lord and Friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end 4

6 Confession of Sin Let us confess our sins to God. Please kneel God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. Please stand The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Please sit Greetings and Announcements Offertory Sentence Offertory Anthem The angel Gabriel Arranged by Kevin J. Sadowski The Angel Gabriel from heaven came, his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame; 'All hail,' said he, 'thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady.' Gloria! 'For known a blessèd Mother thou shalt be, all generations laud and honour thee, thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold; most highly favoured lady.' Gloria! Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head, 'To me be as it pleaseth God,' she said, 'My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name': most highly favoured lady. Gloria! The Holy Communion Please stand The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Blessed are you, lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels, and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise: 6

7 Sanctus & Benedictus NEW PLAINSONG How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Savior, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave thanks to you and said: Drink this, all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon this cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creations; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. Bring us at the last with all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendor for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honor and glory and power be yours forever and ever. Amen. As our Savior taught us, so we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Agnus Dei NEW PLAINSONG 7

8 Communion Ave Maria Bach-Gounod Hail, Mary, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women and blessed be the fruit of thy womb. Amen. Please stand Post-Communion Prayer Let us pray. God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim you redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Please sit Birthdays and Anniversaries O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand Blessing Officiant People Officiant People Officiant People Officiant People May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior Christ came among us in great humility, sanctify you with the light of his blessing and set you free from all sin. Amen. May Christ, whose second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and constant in love. Amen. May you, who rejoice in the first Advent of our Redeemer, at his second Advent be rewarded with unending life. Amen. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. Hymn 66, Verse 1 Come, thou long expected Jesus STUTTGART Dismissal Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. 9 The Choir Christina Pecce, Charles Cooney, Steven Hyder Roger D. Stanley Associate Organist Marcel Dupré ( ), last century's greatest organ virtuoso, was Organiste-Titulaire of St. Sulpice ( ), composer, Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatory, and a prolific recording artist. He blazed his way across the century, leaving a profound effect on the organ and musical world. In the 1920s, substituting for the ailing Louis Vierne at Notre Dame, he improvised 15 responses to the Antiphons and the Magnificat at Vespers. A visitor to the organ tribune, Claude Johnson (then head of Rolls-Royce), commissioned Dupré to transcribe these improvisations and then had them published. The various movements are in many styles: today s postlude is in typical French toccata style with great flashes of sound over a strong pedal melody. 10 Letter from Wes Dear St. Chrysostom's Parish Community, This season of Incarnation I want to send my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for making the nearness of God's presence so evident to me, Lori, and our daughters. Your reaching out to us has been comforting and life-giving in every way. I don't know how to express how much your care, concern, and support have meant except to say thank you so, so much. The dinner meals were such a special gift and help, not to mention delicious everyone. And your notes, cards, and prayers have surrounded us and buoyed us up with healing and strength. I miss you and so look forward to being back with you on Sunday, January 6th to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany, Holy Baptism, the culmination of our church's 125th anniversary, and a new year with new joys and new possibilities. In the meantime, I hope this Christmas you will give yourself the gifts of patience, gentleness, and kindness that you have given in such abundance to me and my family. Peace and joy to you, Wes Smedley 10

Adult Forum-Advent 2018 Sundays at 10a.m. December Open Hearts: Reflections on Advent Led by: The Rev. Dr. Sam Portaro, Theologian-in-Residence The quality of God s omniscience, and openness are expressed in our Eucharistic liturgies with the Collect of Purity, a prayer that puts it right out there for us: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. In a series of reflections upon the phrase, to you all hearts are open, Sam Portaro opens varied dimensions, perspectives, and implications of this rich theme, especially as a window into Advent, the liturgical prelude to Christmas. In these fractious times of social, political, cultural and ecclesiological ferment and change, Christians are especially challenged to lead from and with open hearts, in service to the God of the open heart. When Home Won't Let You Stay By: James A. Bowey, Artist in Residence October-December 31 st James is presenting his poignant traveling exhibit about refugees in America, as well as community programs about the refugee crisis. whenhomewontletyoustay.org. Adult Forum-Winter 2019 Sundays at 10a.m. January 13 *February 3 & 24 * March 17 * April 7 Soul Friends: An Inquiry into Christian Faith as practiced in The Episcopal Church Are you a newcomer to St. Chrysostom s? Curious about the Christian religion? Soul Friends is a companionable introduction to the Episcopal tradition. Sharing the exploration with a mentor, experience the life of the community, not just study it as an academic discipline. At the end of the short journey, those who wish to commit to relationship with the church through baptism or confirmation or wish to affirm their commitment to the Episcopal Church, are eligible to do so through the ancient ritual of the Great Vigil of Easter, the occasion of Christian commitment and reception into the community of faith. There is, however, no expectation or assumption that all inquirers will reach this point of commitment in this initial exploratory journey. Whatever your point of beginning, whatever your journey s end, we welcome you to come along. Participants are expected to read Sheer Christianity: Conjectures on a Catechism by Sam Portaro in segments of pages (about 15 pages per week), in preparation for each of five Sunday morning sessions scheduled at three-week intervals. The Sunday sessions with Sam will be conversational, encouraging discussion on the readings. Please register with the Parish Office at info@saintc.org 13 or (312)
