X The Word of God X Voluntary Vivace Georg Philip Telemann Please stand Hymn 420 When in our music God is glorified ENGELBERG Opening Acclamation: Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be God s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit Reading 1 Kings 2:10-12, 3:3-14 Lector A reading from the first book of Kings. David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to 4

offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I should give you. And Solomon said, You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people? It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life. Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 111 Confitibor tibi Chant: Richard Hoskins The Cantor sings the refrain, all repeat it Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, * In the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the deeds of the Lord! * they are studied by all who delight in them. His work is full of majesty and splendour, * and his righteousness endures for ever. He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. Refrain He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands * of the nation. The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity. Refrain Alleluia The Cantor sings the Alleluia, all repeat it. The Alleluia is repeated after the Gospel reading. Celtic Alleluia 5

Please stand Gospel John 6:51-58 Deacon The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please sit Sermon Nicene Creed (sung by all) We believe in God the Father, God Almighty by whose plan Earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Savior, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came. Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven s king to rule and reign, to the Father s side ascended til as judge he comes again. We believe in God the Spirit; in one church, below, above; saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Savior, Lord and Friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end. The Rev. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. 8 The Doxology CHRISTE SANCTORUM X THE HOLY COMMUNION X Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name: Hymn S-125 Sanctus & Benedictus Richard Proulx Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his 8

arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to Communion Celebrant We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. People We who are many are one Body, for we all share in the one Bread. Communion Solo Please stand. Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now in the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please sit Birthdays and Anniversaries O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand Blessing May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. 9

The Campaign for St. Chrysostom s Church and Day School Exciting news! We have arrived at 50% of our $15,000,000 fundraising goal! After just over a year into the advancement phase of the Capital Campaign, we have hit half our fundraising goal! This an exceptional milestone, and demonstrates the commitment and passion found within the Saint Chrysostom s Church and Day School community. We remain deeply grateful to the many members who have stepped up with Leadership Gifts in support of the Campaign. While we have $7.5 million to go, we cannot contain our excitement! A successful campaign will mean more functional and missional space for outreach programs; expanded Day School classrooms, programs and scholarships; and stewardship of our historical and aging building. With God s blessing and your participation, this is possible. We ask that you give prayerful thought to how you can help ensure our success. Please take our calls and accept our invitations to discuss our plans. We want you to participate in a way that feels most meaningful to you and your family. Questions?
