Calendar 8 Invite a friend to Worship, to Sunday school, to Book Club, to Faith Circle, to a Men s Breakfast Did you know that most people who eventually join a church do so because a friend made a personal invitation? Be that friend. Dear Members & Friends of First Presbyterian, Let me begin my first newsletter column with a thank-you for the warm reception I have received as your new Temporary Pastor. My first Sunday here I was greeted by friendly faces, hardy handshakes, and half of a tasty, large cake (the other half was a birthday cake for our Christian Educator, Debby Madden). I have enjoyed my past association with First Pres, and I look forward to the coming months of friendship and ministry among you. The goal is for me to serve until your new full-time Pastor is called and begins ministering among you in the near future. In the meantime, let me introduce you to the 12-part sermon series on the Ten Commandments that I will begin on the first Sunday of September. After an initial sermon when I will introduce the series, I will consider each of the commandments in order. The one exception will be on October 26th, when I have a prior out-of-town commitment. On that Sunday, my husband will preach on Commandment 6, You Shall Not Kill. The previous week I will preach on Commandment 7, You Shall Not Commit Adultery. The schedule for the series is: Introduction to the Ten Commandments: Heaven Fire and Brimstone Sep. 14 You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me Sep. 21 You Shall Not Make for Yourself a Graven Image Sep. 28 You Shall Not Take the Name of the Lord in Vain Oct. 5 Remember the Sabbath and Keep It Holy Oct. 12 Honor Your Father and Mother Oct. 19 You Shall Not Commit Adultery Oct. 26 You Shall Not Kill (guest preacher: The Rev. Dr. Buz Myers) Nov. 2 You Shall Not Steal Nov. 9 You Shall Not Bear False Witness Nov. 16 You Shall Not Covet Nov. 23 Conclusion: At a Distance The children will also be learning about the Ten Commandments in Sunday school during the fall. A combined (adult & youth) Intro class will be taught by Debby Madden on Sep. 14, Gathering Room. Again, let me say how thrilled I am that God has led me to this ministry in this historic church. First Presbyterian has a long history of superb pastoral leadership, hard-working and devoted lay leadership, and generous members and friends who give freely of their time and resources for the work of the Church. It is truly an honor to be a part of this strong fellowship devoted to the glory of God and the advancement of God s Kingdom. I look forward to getting to know you better in the coming months. Please pray for me and for our church as we journey together during this interim period in the life of First Presbyterian Church. Yours in Christ, The Rev. Anne K. Myers

RuthAnn Shoenfelt: Pup (Millie Koishal) and I had a wonderful, learning, inspirational, fun experience. She is already talking about going by herself next year. I m happy that she wants to keep going to camp, but am also sad that I have four years before I can go with the next grandchild. Debby Madden: It was a great privilege to volunteer as a chaplain for a week at Camp Krislund. I was blessed to lead a Bible study for volunteers, share worship leadership with Rev. Vern Gauthier, First United PC, Newville, and to pray for the campers and counselors. The new Camp director, Gene Joiner, has even better plans for Krislund s future. I hope to see more of our children and youth in camp next year. Also attending from First Church were: Sharon Miller & her grandson; Barb & Katie Crum; Rebert & Camryn Thompson; and Delaney Crim. BOOK CLUB September s Book Club selection is Jackdaws, by Ken Follett the story of a gang of all-female saboteurs who go behind German lines. In October, two books will be discussed: 1) Jacob Have I Loved, by Katherine Patterson. The title refers to the sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau. The story takes place in the early 1940s on a small, fictional town in the Chesapeake Bay. 2) Pink and Say, by Patricia Polacco, is a true story of Pinkus Aylee (Pink), a black Union soldier, who finds 15-year old Sheldon Curtis (Say) left for dead and carries him home to be tended by his mother. Civil War history comes to life in this book! HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AUGUST 13 SESSION MEETING Welcomed Rev. Anne Myers to First. She did an excellent job with moderating and energizing this meeting.
