2 Page 2 I have exciting things to share with you this month for our church. The first is an upcoming catalyst event in August and an upcoming church conference. The catalyst event is scheduled for Saturday, August 12 th so please mark the date on your calendar now! We will be partnering with Lifeline Christian Mission based in Columbus to prepare and bag nutritious meals for children in Haiti. We will provide more details about how this is done in the coming months. What is a catalyst event? A catalyst event is a mission project that we invite the Huber Heights community to help us accomplish. We will invite the entire community to join us at the Taylorsville campus to participate in putting together and packaging nutritious meals for hungry and many times, malnourished children in Haiti. I have personally worked with Lifeline Christian Mission in the past and had the opportunity in 2012 to pass out some of these meals to families in Haiti. It is a reputable, non-denominational Christian organization that has great infrastructure in Grand Goave, Haiti to accomplish effective distribution of the meals (and other ministries) to the surrounding region. Each meal costs only 22 and remarkably, includes the cost of the meal ingredients AND transportation to Haiti! Our goal is to prepare and package at least 15,000 meals. So please reserve this date on your calendar now and please include this outreach ministry to our community and mission to children in Haiti in your daily prayers. The other exciting thing happening at Sulphur Grove is that the parking lot project is moving forward! There will be a church conference on Sunday, May 7 to vote on approving the bid on phase one that will be presented by the Trustees and reaffirm the plan for the remaining phases of the overall project. The church conference will also provide an opportunity for your voice, for or against, to be heard. Please remember that only official members in good standing of Sulphur Grove present at the conference will have the opportunity to vote on this matter. All have the opportunity to voice perspectives and opinions, but only members may vote as defined by the United Methodist Book of Discipline. The time of the conference will be announced soon. Please pray for both of the events and plan to be present at both of these significant events in the life of our church. Blessings and Peace in Christ Jesus, Pastor Barry LISTEN LIVE! Traveling this spring? Visiting parents, grandparents or grandkids? You can still worship with your friends and neighbors at Sulphur Grove. The Taylorsville campus broadcasts both the 8:45 and :30 am worship services live through the internet. Simply click into the Sulphur Grove website ( and click on the Click to Listen button toward the bottom of the screen. You can hear all the music, all the prayers, and even the jokes!

3 Page 3 THOUGHTS FROM BRANDT Since I am taking a class in the Methodist movement, I have been thinking a lot about our roots as Methodists. Whether we realize it or not, many of the names of the people who started the Methodist movement are familiar to us. Of course, everyone has heard of John and Charles Wesley. They helped start and then led the movement in England. Does the name Philip Otterbein sound familiar? He with Martin Boehm started the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, one of the parent churches of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, we might recognize the term EUB. Another man by the name of Jacob Albright was also important. He began the Evangelical Association which merged with the UBC to form the EUB. These three major movements, or denominations, are the parents of our current United Methodist Church. Why is that important? All the men mentioned above were profoundly impacted by the Pietist movement. This movement, started by Jacob Spener in Germany, spanned across countries and denominations. The Pietists emphasized a heart religion. A desire to live in the way God wants us to live. Wesley continued this movement through the Holy Club which became the Methodist societies. I wonder if we, the UMC today, have forgotten our roots? Have we wandered away from the holiness movement that gave birth to our denomination? Thomas Cranmer became the Archbishop of Canterbury when Henry VIII was king of England. He was the first leader of the Church of England. He wrote a sermon on salvation that contained two points we all need to remember. First, we are all imperfect. In fact, we are so imperfect that even the good things we do have no merit in our justification. We cannot earn our way to heaven. Second, a true faith means we not only believe in Holy Scripture and the articles of faith, but we also have trust and confidence in God s promises to be saved. Then comes the clencher. A true faith creates in us a heart-felt desire to follow all Jesus commandments; to live as God wants us to. Bottom line my friends; true faith changes us. We don t live the same way anymore. God becomes our highest priority. Have we forgotten that in today s world? I wonder. - Pastor Bob A NOTE FROM THE TRUSTEES Can you please help with the security in the church building? Our church is open and offered for use by church ministries and many outside groups. We need folks who use the building to be responsible for caring for the security of the building. If you unlock the building or turn on lights, please turn them off and lock up as you leave. If you think someone else is still in the building, please confirm that before you leave. Whoever is last should turn off lights and lock up. Please check lights in the restrooms also. Please pray for the security of our church and grounds. Thank you! PIANIST NEEDED Sulphur Grove is looking for a PIANIST to accompany the Praise Kids Children s Choir. If you know of any student or individual who plays piano, please contact Alma Ault for more information.

5 Page 5 MISSIONS AND OUTREACH We are a mission church. We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally. DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SAMARITAN DONATION BIN? For many years, there has been a red plastic bin out in the gathering space at the SGUMC Taylorsville campus. This bin was initially called The Other Place - Dayton s only Daytime homeless Shelter Donations. The purpose of having the red plastic bin was to provide our congregation with a location that they could to place their donated items to help and support the men, women and children staying at The Other Place daytime shelter. Over the years, many support organizations that we at SGUMC supported in the past have evolved. The Other Place is now HomeFull and has the mission of working to end homelessness by providing housing, services, advocacy and education. St Vincent de Paul went from a strictly night time only shelter to a 24-7 shelter. We have also been adopting other Dayton area organizations that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need. We now are donating items to the Dayton area homeless and less fortunate through organizations such as HomeFull (Men s & Woman s Gateway Shelters), St. Vincent de Paul, Mercy Manor, Oasis House, St. Paul s UMC, South Park UMC and Wesley Community Center. The reason for calling our bin The Samaritan is based on Luke - The Parable of the Good Samaritan - the one who had mercy. We believe that this title more accurately describe the growth of our mission from our initial The Other Place to now include all of these organizations that help, support and serve the homeless as well as individuals and families in need. - Allan Matts A NOTE OF THANKS & REPORT FROM THE THE HOMEFULL MISSION TEAM For it is said If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and are unable to support themselves among you, help them as you would a foreigner and stranger, so they can continue to live among you. Leviticus 25:35 On Saturday April 1 st, 2017, SGUMC HomeFull Mission Team members prepared and served lunch to 36 women guests and staff at the St. Vincent DePaul facility. Afterwards, Michael Egan, Meghan Jensen, Al Matts, a volunteer from Wright Patterson, and a staff member prepared and served lunch to 18 family members (mostly children). This was Michael s and Meghan s first time at St. Vincent DePaul s. When leaving to return, both of them were definitely moved by being there serving the ladies and the families at St. Vincent DePaul. Before serving lunch to the ladies, we provided the family section manager with several large cases of size 5 diapers, and two large cases of baby wipes. Later in the week, we provided St. Paul s UMC with a couple of cases of canned vegetables, a small case of canned tuna and canned chicken, a case of Ramen, a large bag of rice, women s socks and clothing, men s and women s hygiene products, books and a few magazines. I want to thank the SGUMC congregation for all of the donated items placed in The Samaritan Bin for the homeless and those in need. These are just some of the desired donations: Money for Bus Passes/Tokens (Place your financial gift in the offering clearly marked HomeFull Bus Passes ) Infant/Children clothing, size 6 Diapers, Training Pants, Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies & Laundry Detergent Men s & Women s Deodorant Feminine Hygiene and Oral Hygiene Products God has so richly blessed each of us in so many ways and wants us to be Good Samaritans. Please consider helping by serving or donating items for the homeless and for those in need. Please continue to keep those who are homeless and in need, especially the children, in your daily thoughts and prayers. For more detailed information regarding donations, please contact Allan Matts at and for more information regarding volunteering to help cooking and serving lunch, please contact Jane Elam at We are in desperate need of more volunteers to help serve.

Dear Church Family, We would like to thank you for the many cards and prayers that we received after Fred s mom, Billie Hill, passed away. It was very comforting to know that we had so much support. Thanks to all who donated desserts for us to take to the meal after the funeral. Everything was very good and much appreciated. Also, thanks to Dan for such a wonderful service. His words were so meaningful and many of our friends and family commented on how nice it was. We are truly blessed. Fred and Sharon Hill On behalf of the Hill Family, thank you all for your kindness during this difficult time. The desserts were delicious and very appreciated. Thank you, Marilyn Hill Dear Sulphur Grove UMC Family, Please accept my sincere thanks for your cards and for your love and support over the years. Your kindness means so much to me. With love and gratitude, Melba Moore Senior Group, Thanks to all who showed my mother and dad so much love and care! All you folks played such an important part in my parents lives. You ll never know how much this church gave me in the help of mother last year. Lilly Cooley & John Cooley are smiling down because of you folks, you made life a little easier! Peggy Fenner Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who made Gary s celebration of his life so perfect. You are a fantastic group of people. This gathering could not have been more perfect. My family is so blessed to have this wonderful church family - Sulphur Grove is the best! May God bless you all! Love, Judy, Scot, Brain & family Caroline Shriver would like to say how very much she appreciated all of the prayers, concerns, cards, gifts, and visits. It meant so much to her! Haiti Mission Update The SGUMC team of volunteers that served in Haiti had a wonderful trip. We were able to help build a driveway for the United Methodist Guest House grounds, which is the first time in 53 years there has been an actual driveway on the grounds (generally the heavy rains flood the road and wash everything away). We were also able to visit a few tourist locations. A HUGE, GENUINE THANK YOU to all of Sulphur Grove for the financial support showered upon this trip with the Love Offering. We were able to donate a bit over $5, directly to the Guest House Project, which will impact all teams, other visitors, the school, and the church, all located within the 11 acres of the campus. Please watch for an invitation to attend a gathering to see pictures, hear stories, and eat! The date is yet to be determined. Blessings to all! Lynn Becker, Team Leader The Staff and Congregation of St. Paul United Methodist Church sincerely thank you for the generous donation. Your support of St. Paul UMC is very much appreciated. Thank you for partnering with St. Paul UMC in ministering with the least, the last and the lost.
