1 Page 1 June 2017 Volume 26 Issue 6 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2017 SULPHUR GROVE will host our annual VBS the week of June from 9-11:30 daily. The theme this year is MAKER FUN FACTORY-CREATED BY GOD, BUILT FOR A PURPOSE. Kids-and youth and adult volunteerswill enjoy a week of music during Sound Waves sing & play, Bible Discovery activities, FunShop crafts, Imagination Station/Maker Games and snacks at the Snack Factory. This year kids will also visit KidVid Cinema where we meet real kids who are learning to embrace the way God made them. Our kids will also have the opportunity to participate in mission projects throughout the week. VBS at Sulphur Grove is offered free of charge to children 4 years old-5 th grade (just completed). Registration forms are available at the VBS information table in the lobby/gathering area or you can register online at sulphurgrove.org. VBS is an awesome opportunity to share God s love with the children of our church and throughout the community. It is a fun-filled week that touches many families. It takes lots of dedicated volunteers to make the week run smoothly. Adults and youth (6 th grade and older) are welcome to volunteer for the entire week or just a day or so. Most of the jobs require no advance planning all you do is show up ready for an exciting morning!! Visit the VBS table for more information or if you would like to volunteer. You may also contact Beth (bethw@sulphurgrove.org) or VBS week at BRANDT is the week of June The theme this year is THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT. 2 Page 2 Driving just outside of Huber Heights in the middle of May I noticed a field where the corn was just peeking through the ground. What came to mind was a biblical principle of which the Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 15: 35 But someone will ask, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come? 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. God reveals much to us in creation if we will only seek that which God is revealing. In this case of corn sprouting and breaking through the ground, I am reminded of the cycle of life after the Fall of humanity. We will all die as a result of the sin of Adam. But Christians have no fear of death. Why? A seed that by all appearances is dead springs forth to new life. The seed is not really dead as a spark of life remains. In that way we are like a seed. While the body may die, we have, if you will, a spark of life in us called the soul. Like the seed that springs forth to new life, we too spring forth to new life in heaven. I have heard it said by some that when we go to heaven we literally become an angel. There is nothing farther from the truth. Angels are a specific order of beings created by God. We are not angels nor are we promoted to the status of an angel. God created humans to human. We do not know exactly what the spiritual body will be. Think of it this way: If you were unaware of the plant a kernel of corn produces, you would have no idea what kind of plant it would produce. It s the same with our resurrected bodies. We only see the seed and do not know what that resurrected body will be like yet we know that we will be resurrected. And remember, post resurrection, the disciples did not immediately recognize Jesus. He was raised to life from death with a body that had changed enough that the disciples did not immediately recognize him. God uses creation to reveal God s glory and God s renewing of life to all who take time to seek out God s revelation. I know we are all busy people so I encourage you to slow down for a few moments and take in what God is speaking to us through creation in this season of renewal and new life. Blessings and Peace in Christ Jesus, Pastor Barry LISTEN LIVE! Traveling this summer? Visiting parents, grandparents or grandkids? 3 Page 3 THOUGHTS FROM BRANDT It s hard to believe that by the time you read this it will be almost June. If you attended the worship service we held at Dayview Care Center in New Carlisle, I m sure your spirits were lifted as much as mine. It is a simple thing for us to serve Holy Communion to people unable to attend worship services, but it means so much to them. As you participate in Holy Communion the next time, take a moment to think about what it would be like to never take the sacrament again. Vacation Bible School is coming up soon. Again, we are participating with the West Charleston Church of the Brethren and the Brandt Lutheran Church in this community event. We may also have some German Baptists participate again. We regularly reach more children in VBS than attend all three of the churches combined. We are taking the love of Christ to the children of the community. This year the theme is The Greatest Commandment. Bullying is a problem in our schools. The best way to combat bullying is to teach our children the commandments to love God and neighbor. Loving someone makes it very difficult to bully them. And loving a bully may plant the seed opening the door for the Holy Spirit s transformation. Come out and join us the week of June 19. We can make a difference in our community. Finally, as you have most likely heard by now, I have been appointed to the Cedarville UMC effective Sunday, June 25. I look forward to seeing what God is going to do in my new assignment and what God is going to do at Brandt and Sulphur Grove UMCs. My prayers are with all of you as you continue to share the love of Christ with Bethel Township and Huber Heights. - Pastor Bob FINANCE COMMITTEE UPDATE On behalf of the finance committee I would like to express our gratitude for the generous budget giving support in April. Having five Sunday s in April helped, but the giving was sufficient for us to make up a March shortfall, pay all of our obligations and have a small surplus to carry over to next month. We hope everyone can continue their generosity. Wil Davis Finance Committee Chair A CHURCH OF MANY COLORS VOLUME III PENTECOST - THE COLOR IS RED The song This is a Church on Fire is a good metaphor for the day of Pentecost. Pentecost Sunday represents an ending as well as a beginning: the end of the Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season (Pentecost means the 50th day in Greek). Pentecost commemorates the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and others assembled in Jerusalem It is the beginning of the early church and the proclamation of its message throughout the world. Pentecost is often referred to as the birthday of the church. Pentecost also gives us an opportunity to ask ourselves the question, What is our community on fire about? Pentecost Sunday this year is on June 4 th. WHAT IN A NAME? EVERYTHING! The HIPAA Privacy Act has implications for pastors and other visitors to the hospital of which you need to be aware. Here is an example. My mother s given name was Wilma Arleen Baughman yet throughout her life she went by her middle name of Arleen (she loathed the name Wilma). Many people did not know my mother s first name. So when she was in the hospital after the HIPAA Act, the person at the information desk would say to those asking for Arleen Baughman, We have no one here by that name. Under the HIPAA Act, unless a visitor (including pastors) can identify the person by their name as it is listed on the patient roster, which is normally their legal name, they cannot acknowledge that person as a patient in the hospital. The same goes for florists trying to deliver flowers or other items. As a result of HIPAA, I want to remind you that if you or a family member identifies by a name other than your/their legal name, you need to let the pastoral staff know the correct name so we will not be turned away when we try to make a hospital visit. I have personally been turned away 6 times since the implementation of the HIPAA so it is not as uncommon as you think it might be. Thanks for your help with this matter! - Pastor Barry

4 Page 4 MISSIONS AND OUTREACH We are a mission church. We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL FOR THE SUPPORT OF GRUB AT THE GROVE We have seen many people come through our doors since the inception of Grub at the Grove eight years ago. Within that time, 96 free monthly community meals have been served, approximately 19,200 people have been fed, and it has taken 52 volunteers each and every month to accomplish the tasks needed during those eight years. Our purpose then and now has remained the same to live and share God s love with others. The idea has been to provide a free monthly community meal for anyone that would like to attend. As the years have unfolded, we have seen much, much more than just people in a big room eating a meal with others they might not know. Old friendships have been renewed and new ones have been formed, our guests have returned time and time again to be fed in ways that are not always visible, and all of the volunteers have come together to participate in various ways to further this common purpose. THANK YOU to everyone who has helped make this ministry possible the dessert makers, dishwashers, bussers, servers, waiters, scrapers, set up and take down helpers, cooks, beverage makers, greeters, holy rollers (people who wrap the silverware), and musicians that entertain us from time to time. Also, thank you to the Scouts who have helped set up the tables and chairs every month. Thanks to Gary Holt who has maintained the sign. And a big thank you to Kay, Jacque, and Traci for everything they have done to keep us on track. Thanks to everyone who has spent time with those needing prayer support. All of us consider it a blessing to be a part of this ministry and look forward to continuing to serve. The next community meal will be Tuesday, June 23, 5-6:30 pm in the Taylorsville Activity Center. Please join us. If you would like to volunteer in some capacity, please contact Carol Tatone at , ctatone@woh.rr.com, or sign up in the Taylorsville pew pads. Thank you so much. 5 Page 5 MISSIONS AND OUTREACH We are a mission church. We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally. A NOTE OF THANKS & REPORT FROM THE THE HOMEFULL MISSION TEAM For it is said This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 1 John 3:16-17 On Saturday May 6 th, 2017, SGUMC HomeFull Mission Team members prepared and served lunch to 34 women guests and afterwards to 27 family members (mostly children) at the St. Vincent DePaul facility. Before serving lunch to the ladies, we provided the family section manager with several large cases of size 5 and 6 diapers, a large case of baby wipes and candy that remained from the Easter Egg hunt. Later in the week, we provided St. Paul s UMC with a couple of cases of canned vegetables, a small case of canned tuna and canned chicken, a case of Ramen, a large bag of rice, bed sheets, pillows, comforter, children s clothing, sleepers, infant food, women s socks and clothing, men s and women s hygiene products, and books. I want to thank the SGUMC congregation for all of the donated items placed in The Samaritan Bin for the homeless and those in need. These are just some of the desired donations: Money for Bus Passes/Tokens (Place your financial gift in the offering clearly marked HomeFull Bus Passes ) Infant/Children clothing, size 6 Diapers, Training Pants, Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies & Laundry Detergent Men s & Women s Deodorant Feminine Hygiene and Oral Hygiene Products God has so richly blessed each of us in so many ways and wants us to be Good Samaritans. 11 Page 11 Notes of Thanks & Recognition! People need to be loved and share that love with others. Dearest Church Family, Words cannot express our gratitude for all of your cards, phone calls and well wishes on the death of my mother. We are so grateful for the meal the church provided. Our whole family was able to be together and remember Mom and not have to worry about how to feed everyone. Our family is so grateful to have our church family by our side. Much love, Bonnie & Bryon Dobbs The Smith and Simala Family s would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during our father Don s illness and death. There is power in your prayers, helping us through this difficult season. We love our Church Family! Cindy & Kurt Simala Dear Sulphur Grove Church Family, Many thanks for your prayers, cards, s, and pastoral hospital visits during my recent surgery and recovery. Your care and kind thoughts have enhanced the healing process. Thanks be to God. Don Hayashi Church Family, Thank you for the many prayers, cards, visits, and support through this challenging time in our journey! Greg is getting stronger every day after his heart surgery and working hard to get more mobility from his stroke three years ago. We are truly blessed to have a loving, caring church family and a God who takes care of us! May God bless you as richly as He has blessed us through you!! Love, Kay & Greg Lowery I would like to thank all of the blood donors who gave blood for the Community Blood Center on April 22nd. A big thanks to Haylee Hunt and Lois Drodge for hosting. Thank you!! Dave Hunt Thank you to the Cub Scouts for planting the flowers in the courtyard! Thank you to all the Scouts and leaders for help with setting up and taking down tables for church events! God bless you for your service! Thank you so much to everyone who helped make the Sulphur Grove Easter Egg Hunt a huge success!! The congregation was amazingly generous with candy donations. We were able to fill over 3000 eggs!! Thanks also to the wonderful people who donated stuffed animals and prizes we were able to have 16 prizes eggs (4 prizes for each group)!! And on the morning of the hunt I had 25 people show up to put the eggs out, help with registration, show parents and kids where to go, offer refreshments and help clean up. We had about 150 parents and kids enjoy a beautiful morning at Sulphur Grove. This will definitely be an annual event from now on!! Have you noticed? We have a new sign in front of the church announcing Grub at the Grove dinner dates. The original sign served us well for many years, but it was time for replacement. Thanks to Tim Moore, son of Melba Moore and nephew of Jay Jacoby, Tim made, donated and mounted the new sign. Thanks Tim for your generosity. The sign looks beautiful and now changing monthly dinner dates is "a piece of cake." The Grub at the Grove Team Thank you to church conference participants. On behalf of the entire Finance Committee, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the church conference on Sunday May 7 th. About a third of the members of the committee were members of an Ad Hoc Committee volunteered to participate in a series of meetings with financial institutions in search of a replacement mortgage for our current mortgage, for the 2007 facility expansion. We have been able to obtain a replacement mortgage for much better terms than the original, which was the best that could be done at the time, but a lot has changed since then. We are grateful the congregation supported our recommendation which will save almost $1, in interest every month. Wil Davis Finance Committee Chair The Staff and Congregation of St. Paul United Methodist Church sincerely thank you for the generous donation. Your support of St. Paul UMC is very much appreciated. Thank you for partnering with St. Paul UMC in ministering with the least, the last and the lost. EASTER EGG HUNT THANK YOU
