We were discussing Communion and swapping stories, and I happened to mention that our church had to celebrate the Sacrament one Sunday with Girl Scout cookies. They did a double-take, but then completely understood when I went on to explain what happened. If I remember correctly, the weather was pretty bad that spring day. Maybe some snow and ice and whatnot. Or perhaps it was just bitter cold. Either way, we didn t have a lot of people show up for worship. It was right before the service started, just a couple minutes away, when it was brought to my attention that the Communion Table had not been set up yet. To complicate things, we didn t have a loaf of bread either. We looked around and saw a box of Girl Scout cookies Trefoils, if I recall. Folks looked at me questioningly, and I said, They ll have to do. During the service I lifted up a shortbread cookie and said, This is this is my body, broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And I broke it. You know what? We still had Communion that day. According to the Presbyterian Directory of Worship, Bread common to the culture of the community should be provided to be broken by the one who provides. The reasoning behind this is that not everyone has access to the exact same bread Jesus used. Heck, some faith communities don t have bread of any kind, especially in the most impoverished third-world countries. It s far better to serve Communion with whatever s available than not serving it at all. I m fairly certain Jesus would agree with this. When I went to seminary in the late 90s, there was a lady who could not take Communion in the chapel because she would have had a major allergic reaction to the leavened bread that was served. It was the first time the school had run into something like that, and they made the decision to switch breads so she could be fully included in the Sacrament. I m fairly certain Jesus would agree with this, too. Since then, I've noticed more and more churches doing the same thing. In our last meeting, Session discussed our choice of Communion bread. We decided that we wouldn t want to risk anyone being excluded because of food allergies, which definitely seems to be more common today or, at the very least, we ve become more aware of them. It'd be similar to swapping out grape juice for wine so as not to trigger an alcoholic. A motion was made, and the vote was unanimous that we ll switch to unleavened bread going forward. It s a win/win situation. Everyone can partake, and we re serving bread that s a little more authentic to what Jesus would have used. (Though I personally think he'd enjoy the Girl Scout cookies, too.) See you on Sunday, --Rev. Rob Leischner
