Memory Verse of the Week: Matthew 26:26-28 (ESV) Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. For whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord. The Passover (Exodus 12) used this type of bread and so Jesus did too when He instituted the Lord s Supper Consecration Means. The act of mystery that allows the sacrament to be both body and blood and bread and wine Altar The of Jesus sacrifice for us Sacristy The place where is prepared and stored Words of Institution The words of Jesus that are as the bread and wine are consecrated Church Traditions of The Lord s Supper: Open Anyone is Closed Only of the church are welcome Close All who and have been instructed Lesson 3: Page 3

Experiential Activity- (Items Needed for each group: 1 bottle of grape juice, cups for each person, 1 Matzoh cracker, 1 glass of salt water, one piece of parsley per person, 1 cup of cinnamon apple sauce, 3 oz dab of horseradish sauce, piece of lamb (optional as some Passover meals do not partake in this). For this activity your group will get to learn about the Passover Meal. It was a big feast and quite a big deal because it was a remembrance of what the Jews/Israelites had gone through during their time of slavery under the Egyptians. It was kind of like Thanksgiving where people gathered and gave thanks to God for how He had delivered them. Jesus was celebrating this meal with His disciples when He first instituted the sacrament of the Lord s Supper. Each item of the meal was symbolic for something significant the Israelites went through. As you go through each one: 1) Read together the passage associated with the food, 2) then let them taste the item 3) then answer the question(s) associated with each item. Be aware of the time as this activity is easy to rush through or even take a long time. Spend about 1-2 minutes on each one. Maybe you can assign each student a section at the beginning and they can read their passage when the time comes. Application- Small Group Lesson 9 Year 1 Read Exodus 15:1-5 Drink the Cup of Sanctification (The first of 4 cups of wine throughout the Passover Feast) What event is this poem or song talking about? How did God save the Israelites from the Egyptians? For help see Exodus 14:26-31 Read Exodus 1:8-10 & Exodus 12:17-20 Matzoh Cracker- had no yeast. Yeast reminded them of sin so they wanted to be reminded to try and not sin. Horseradish- reminded Israel of the bitterness of slavery in Egypt Have them dip their cracker in the horseradish and eat Why do you think they would want to be reminded of their slavery? Exodus 15:6-10 Cup of Praise (2) fill the cups again with grape juice and have them drink What are some of the pictures that this song/poem give of how God destroyed their enemies? What does this say about God s power and why we praise Him? Lesson 3: Page 5
Read Exodus 1:11-14 Kharoset (Apple/Cinnamon Mix)- reminded Israel of the mortar for brick making in Israel. What do you think they made with all those bricks? Think back to Egyptian history and some of the wonders of the world we still have. Read Matthew 26:27-29 Have them drink the Cup of Redemption (3) This is the one Jesus used when He said, This is My blood and instituted communion What do you think the disciples thought when Jesus said this during the middle of the yearly Passover Meal? Confused? Angry? Excited? Read Exodus 5:6-9 & 6:6-8 Parsley- reminded Israel of new life Salt Water- reminded Israel of the tears they shed in slavery Have them dip their parsley in the salt water and eat. Why do you think they remembered the good times and the bad times? Do you think that saying to us that we need to talk about our good and bad times with others too? this is Exodus 15:11-18 Cup of Hope (4)- this last cup reminds them of God s eternal hope. What hope has God given us? Exodus 12:4-11 Lamb- reminds Israel of the sacrifice needed for their sin. We know that Jesus ultimately became the Lamb of God and sacrificed Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. What would your life be like if you had to sacrifice a lamb each week because of the sins you had committed? Why was Jesus the only one who could be sacrificed for everyone? (See verse 5) Lesson 3: Page 6
Family Time Lesson 9 Year 1 Family Time is meant to be an opportunity to get the family talking about spiritual things. Multiple studies show that parents and grandparents are the #1 faith role models in a child s life. We know life is busy, but we want to give you opportunities to grow together. The best time to do it is together in the car, while eating a meal together, or simply anytime you can spend some time together 1) As a family, do this after eating a meal together. Ask your parents, Why is it important that our family eats together? 2) List three of your most memorable meals that you spent with family or friends. What made them so special? 1) 2) 3) 3) Look up these famous meals where people ate together in your Bible. Write down what the special occasion was. Exodus 12:1-30 Matthew 15:29-39 Mark 14:12-26 Luke 15:1-2 Luke 15:25-32 Acts 2:42-47 Lesson 3: Page 7
4) Sharing a meal with other people was a big deal, especially in Jesus time. We get the opportunity to share a meal with ALL Christians every time we take the Lord s Supper. Check out 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Because there is body, for we all partake of the loaf, we, who are many are loaf. 5) We also get to share a meal with Jesus as we take part in the Lord s Supper. Check out Question #291 in your Catechism and see what it says about Christ s body and blood. The bread and wine in the Sacrament are Christ s and by sacramental union. By the power of His, Christ gives His Body and blood,, and the consecrated ( ) bread and wine. 6) In one word, describe what The Lord s Supper means to you: Your Name: Parent Signature: Lesson 3: Page 8
