1 Church Staff I KNOW HE IS, BUT WHAT AM I? September 2013 Chad Thibodeaux Senior Pastor Don Minter Teaching Pastor Michael Cathey Worship Pastor Philip Vaughn Senior Adult Pastor James Clonts Student Pastor Crystal Hewitt Children s Pastor Melanie Moss-Butler Child Development Center Director Debbie Darnell Office Manager Sherry Floyd Finance Manager Karan Gardner Financial Assistant Sandra Jacobs-Aull Administrative Assistant Growing up I had a nemesis. His name? Matthew Cutler. He was two years older than I, and had every intention of destroying my identity. He did not want me to think one positive thought about myself, so he constantly barraged my psyche with negative thoughts. He called me names. He made fun of my actions. He spread lies about me, and he bullied me at recess. It is fair to say that as a child, this intimidated me. He was only 10 years old, but he controlled many aspects of my life. I had become a slave to him, if only in my mind. He called me names, and although most of the things he said were not true, I believed them. It began to shape me. When I spoke with my parents, regarding his actions, they dismissed my feelings due to my elementary age. What was I to do? Fortunately for me, his father accepted a job in another state and Matthew was once and for all removed from my life. You have a spiritual enemy that is calling you names, and he has every intention of destroying your spiritual identity. He spreads lies about who you are and who God is. He holds you hostage to your past by showering you with guilt and shame. We live in a culture that constantly tells us that our identity is found in what we have or have not done; what job we have or what career we are hoping for; how we have succeeded or how we have failed. This, simply, is anti-gospel and anti-jesus. The Bible says that the identity we all need is one that cannot be taken away by our failure or circumstances. The identity that we need is found only in God, our victorious Savior. Strong, Patient, Loving, Just. These are the kind of words that God uses to describe Himself and most of us believe those. But what about the words God uses to describe us? Why do we believe every lie that comes from the enemy, but we struggle to believe God when He calls us loved, wise, chosen, and blameless? How do we reconcile God's identity with our own? Join us beginning September 8 for our new series, I Know He Is, But What Am I? and we will focus on our spiritual identity. We will dissect Ephesians 3:1-14 and discover how to re-imagine our self in the image of God. Blessings, Pastor Chad Sonja Hollis Administrative Assistant Chapin Baptist Church exists to equip every generation to reach their world (oikos) for Christ

3 Page 3 Sunday Mornings in the Children s Ministry: I strongly encourage you to bring your children for both services. Your children are learning a Bible story and memory verse through hands on activities, games, snack, music and worship. Our servant leaders serving in Children s Ministry have a heart for children and their love for Jesus shines through. I am so excited of what s to come in Children s Ministry at Chapin Baptist. God has big things planned. Our big Kick Off day is on September 8! On this day we are changing what happens on Sunday mornings to an exciting VBS style experience. We are going all out with our bible study, crafts, snack, and out of this world worship encounter for the children EVERY SUNDAY MORNING. The children will experience church at their level. They will be jumping for Jesus, enjoying skits, dramas, puppets, music and learning what it is to worship our Father. What are your kids learning this month? Preschoolers are going on a Road Trip this month! And, we re going with Joseph. Joseph is one of my favorite Bible friends. His story is amazing! (And, it makes a great musical.) Crazy thing after crazy thing happened to Joseph, but he still loved God and trusted Him. He did his best in every situation because he knew that s what God wanted from him. While preschoolers learn Joseph s story, they will also learn that they were made by God that they are special. They are unique beings made by the Creator of the universe to go on their very own Road Trip. You see, God made Joseph the way He did because He had a plan for Joseph. And, God has a plan for you and me and each one of our preschoolers. God doesn t promise that the journey will be easy. Joseph s story is proof of that. God does promise to be with us on the journey. God does promise that He has a plan. God does promise to love us and care for us in every circumstance. And, if we trust like Joseph did, God can use us to do amazing things. He used Joseph to basically save an entire region of the world. What can you do if you trust God s plan for you? Gradeschool Kids: In the beginning of their relationship with Jesus, the disciples might not have been the most courageous bunch you ve ever seen. Remember when the storm blew up and even the most seasoned fishermen woke Jesus in a panic (Mark 4)? But Jesus wasn t scared. He knew the power and reliability of God. Time and again, Jesus showed His disciples that God would provide whenever they needed Him. As they learned to trust God, the disciples courage grew to the point that Peter and John boldly testified before the Jewish government (Acts 4) about Jesus life and resurrection. Courage is being brave enough to do what you should do, even when you re afraid. Courage is not the absence of fear but how you respond in the face of fear. When we approach potentially scary situations, we can remember that God is big enough to handle anything, He ll always be with us, and He ll provide for our needs. The monthly memory verse is: When I m afraid, I will trust in You, Psalm 56:3, NIrV. Many of God s followers will tell you their greatest adventure started when they trusted God in a decision they were afraid of. But in the end, they never regretted living courageously and believing God s promises. Love in Christ, Crystal Hewitt Children s Pastor crystal@chapinbaptist.com Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 Attention Parents!!! This Sunday, September 1st, Pastor Chad is planning a special movie series in worship that is suitable for children. We are having the children (kindergarten and up) attend worship with their parents. We will not have our regular program on this morning as we want our grade schoolers to have the opportunity to go with you, as a family to worship. It is going to be an awesome family worship experience with popcorn and a movie! Needs in Children s Ministry: You are going to want to be a part of Children s Ministry on Sunday mornings. We need you. There are many different opportunities to serve to make a difference in the lives of our children. Each and every part of serving is an important part of the puzzle that we are putting together with them to gain understanding of Christ s love for them. The following opportunities are open: Nursery, Toddlers, Crafts, Front Desk, Welcoming, and Preschool Snacks. Please contact me if you want more information, I would love to talk to you about how you can help in serving our children.

4 Page 4 Merge3 Student Ministries Student Pastor James Clonts Summer Fading Fast Our students had an incredible summer. They have been involved in service projects throughout the community and within the church. From painting at Christ Gate to serving at food Shelters, our students have been giving their time unselfishly this summer and they have been loving it! We saw the Braves win in extra innings with a walk off home run, we have measured cannonball splashes at lake days and had some intense kickball games. Probably our funniest time has been Dodgeball games with the Lost Princesses (get your hot pink or lavender t-shirt for $10!). As much fun as summer has been, this school year is going to be one to never forget. Merge Worship Ready for God's Blessings This Sunday marks our first day at our new schedule. (Listed below and at Sunday nights are for High School students and Wednesdays are for our Middle School students. We are still getting together at 4:00 pm for Kickball for all students on Sunday afternoon. The purpose of our Sunday night and Wednesday night split worship is really two fold. One, our leadership has the ability to effectively minister to and love on students. It's what we do and the relational ministry we do of games and fun is built to create doorways for God to move. But the other reason we split our students in our schedule is because we are boldly and expectantly pleading for God to supernaturally do a work that will have us all in awe! We want to see this place full of students, so we can see more and more students become full of God. Church, pray for our students and our leaders so we can see it happen! Lets Get a Routine Sunday 9:00 am - Traditional Worship Experience in Worship Center (Students attend worship or serve in ministry) 10:00 am - Students Small Group Bible Study in the Big Pointe Classroom 11:00 am - Modern Worship Experience in Worship Center (Students attend worship or serve in ministry) 4:00 pm - Kickball on Field 2 at Crooked Creek Park for all students 6:00 pm - Merge Worship Experience for High School Students Dinner at 6:00 pm and worship experience starts at 6:30 pm and ends by 8:00 pm Wednesday 3:25 pm - Wednesday Walkover / Chapin Middle School dismisses and students (with permission slip on file) are walked over to The Pointe 3:30-5:30pm - Homework & Hang / MS students work on homework, play games and have fun together 5:30pm- Merge Worship Experience for Middle School students - Dinner at 5:30 and worship experience starts at 6:00 pm and ends by 7:30 pm. Holy Hidden Heroes What if we won't ever become significant? What if we aren't the people that do big things? We often focus our attention on the few people that stand out, whether we are reading in the Bible or talking at church. But the Bible is full of obscure and radically important people that made a huge impact by only doing small stuff. What if we can do that? Our students will take a close look at the stories of five people we always pass over but allowed God to work through them. We will take a look at a prostitute, a visionary, a seer, a hit man, and a priest. What will happen if we let God work through us? Each week the same message theme will be taught in our separate worship experiences, but tailored to the age and maturity of the audience. More Leaders Needed Remember you have something to uniquely offer our students. You were once a teenager too! You might even still act a little immature! If that is the case, we could use you here! Whether it s for Wednesday Walkover to play cards and board games, or its allowing us to have ten high school students in your house for a weeknight Bible study where you provide a seat and a roof, and we provide the teacher and the students! Or even maybe you can volunteer to help provide food once a month on a Sunday night or Wednesday night! You could even help run our website or draw/ design media to put on campus or on a poster, or help fundraise for trips! We need YOUR help! We can find how God has wired you to help these students on their journey. Contact Pastor James at james@chapinbaptist.com **Each Sunday and Wednesday night dinner will be served for our students. To be able to financially focus on the spiritual development of our students, there will be a small charge to cover the cost of food.

Pastor Pierre Chaisson was the host minister for our efforts. Pierre is the pastor of the newly organized church in Cheticamp. Missional Matters Engage and Connect: What ever it takes The team this year included four members: 3 volunteers from Chapin Baptist and one volunteer from Union, SC. Chapin Baptist: Kahn and Deborah Chaddock, and Chuck Middlebrooks. Union Baptist: Joann Sweatt During the week of August 11, the team conducted VBS at the Centre for the Arts in Inverness. The theme for the event was Colossal Coaster World. In addition to conducting the VBS, the team members also visited Sunday morning worship in Cheticamp, followed by a lunch provided by the church. Later that day, the team took a 90 minute trip to Dingwall for their Sunday evening Bible-study. What a blessing to see the growth in this small fishing village on the northern-most coast of Cape Breton. In attendance were several large families, including a Canadian Royal Mounted Policeman and his family! During the week the team also visited Bible study groups in Cheticamp and Port Hood. Much work is left to do, but God s spirit is working in this northern island of Nova Scotia. Pre-Fair Ministry (October 7-8) Fair Ministry (October 9-20) It has been said that mission begins at home. Although this statement may or may not fully communicate a comprehensive mission strategy, it does remind us that we, as Chapin Baptists, are living in both a mission base and a mission field. The South Carolina State Fair Ministry offers an abundance of mission opportunities right here at home. The dates for this year s South Carolina State Fair ministry will be October 9-20, and the Pre-Fair ministry will be from October 7-8. Last year Chapin Baptist Church had eleven volunteers that participated in this event. If you are interested in participating in this year s fair ministry, or for more information regarding dates and times available, please contact Kahn Chaddock at or via at kahnc@bellsouth.net.
