1 The Circuit Rider Solon United Methodist Church 122 N. West, Solon, IA Phone: Minister s Musings by Pastor Scott Dear Members and Friends of Solon UMC, I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. (2 Timothy 1:5) This scripture verse captures my attention as we will celebrate Confirmation for 24 youth Sunday October 26 th. The early church was already wondering, as churches do today, how faith comes to be passed on from one generation to another. Today the same custom of passing on the faith exists, but to what degree? Many parents continue to ask, Will my son or daughter be Christian? How can we pass on the faith to the next generations? How can we make the faith sticky-faith (faith that sticks throughout one s life)? There is no greater tool for faith formation then observation. We all learn a great deal by watching others, by looking over their shoulders as they actively live their faith. Timothy was raised in the Christian faith from childhood and is reminded of its importance here, but Timothy had more than a good upbringing. He had been given a calling. He was ordained by Paul s own hands we read, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:6, 7). Paul was writing to Timothy that his faith mattered. This fall we at Solon UMC will be exploring our ministry together. This will happen as we explore together the study entitled A Disciple s Path. Small group facilitators from our congregation have been trained to lead the study (see the small group information in this newsletter to get involved). I urge every member to take time to join in this study. It is my hope that we will better understand our personal faith and our call as a faith community to make disciples for Jesus Christ and celebrate this year s group of confirmation youth. Blessings, Pastor Scott Keele Kober

I am so happy that we will be here on Sundays and that my church family will remain as such. Thank you for allowing me to serve with you. ~Jessie Trepanier
6 Christian Education News WOW! What a great start to our Sunday School year! It s been exciting for me to see all our Sunday School classrooms filled with energetic people wanting to learn more about God s Word. If you haven t had a chance to come to Sunday School yet this fall, please make October the month to come! We have classes starting in preschool all the way to our 3 adult Sunday School classes. Here s a preview of our curriculum: Preschool through Kindergarten: They are using a Veggie Tales curriculum called Veggie Connections. We are currently on a Faith Connection learning God s Word through the stories of Moses. 1 st grade through 4 th grade: They are using a curriculum from Cokesbury called Grow, Proclaim, Serve! This is where our students learn how their faith will grow in leaps and bounds. 5 th and 6 th grade: They are using new bible lessons featuring The Action Bible and the supplemental Devotions book to help with their lessons. They are also using the curriculum, LinC, which is used in Junior High and High School (which is described below). Junior High and High School: They are using the curriculum from Cokesbury called LinC: Living in Christ. Each of these classes receives a weekly with a topic, relevant to their current teen world, and engages in group discussions. The curriculum equips our teachers with thoughts and ideas to help our youth make good choices, with a biblical perspective in mind. New Teachers join our Sunday School team: As announced in the prior newsletter, we were looking for volunteer Sunday School teachers. I m pleased to announce that Todd Hauser and Sam Bishop will be leading our 3 rd grade class, Charity Adams joined Sue Wilkinson in the Junior High class and Jenn Stiegelmeyer is leading our Sunday School Music time. I m currently working with a few more people to get our 1 st & 2 nd grade class openings filled. Thank you new teachers and enjoy serving in our Children s Ministry program. The 3 rd grade class will take a break from our current curriculum to embark their adventure in their new bibles using a book called, Getting to know your bibles. Enjoy your treasure! CLUB JAM HAS BEGUN! We started our Wednesday after-school program for Kindergarten thru 4 th grade on Oct 1 st. We are using a past (2010) VBS curriculum called High Seas Expedition Exploring the Might Love of God. Pre-registration is required if you would like your children to participate.
