Our Church s Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service will be April 21 at 7:00pm. This moving service of shadows recounts the passion story (the story of the suffering of Jesus) in a candle-extinguishing service that includes a Last Supper night commemoration of communion. If you would like to read a small portion of Scripture for this service, please let the office know. With 14 readers, your participation is needed. The Easter Sunrise Service will be at 6:30am at the First Baptist Church, with Suzanne Yester speaking. Join us for Resurrection Celebration at both the 8:30am and 11am services! Bring a friend! PLEASE BRING FRESH SPRING FLOWERS FOR OUR CROSS IN THE SANCTUARY ON EASTER SUNDAY. The children will place their flowers on the cross during the Sunday School hour. Our annual Egg Hunt will be during Sunday School on Palm Sunday, April 17 th. We will have an Egg Stuffin Party Wed., April 13 th during supper. Passion Plays surround Palm Sunday Our Church is involved in 2 great opportunities on Palm Sunday weekend. See the enclosed fliers for more details. The first is Our Passion for Christ, a free program at The Refuge on the 16 th. We are helping to provide food for lunch. There will be outdoor activities at 10am, food, music and the special Passion Play at 2pm. Prices for lunch will be set by contributing churches, with tickets being presold and available at the event. All profits will benefit The Refuge. The Refuge will provide free tea and water. Sodas will be available for purchase. The church who turns in the largest donation that day will receive a complimentary canoe trip for up to 20 people for their cook team. Irene and Randy Pollard will be cooking for our church. You may see them for tickets or purchase on site the day of the event. (See flyer) We will also be a part of the musical The Third Day, with presentations the 16 th (7pm) and Palm Sunday the 17 th (3pm). With the presentation on the 17 th, we are car-pooling as a group for all who might like to join us, especially for those who might need a ride. We ll leave the church parking lot at about 12:15pm, go to lunch together, and then attend the musical at First UMC in Washington. We have church members in the cast, and this will be the final year this production is done this way, so you are encouraged to come and experience the powerful message. Education Wing Renovations You will want to come and see the renovations taking place in the youth rooms and the nursery. The youth room renovations are being provided through memorials done to honor Nan Gray Monk. The nursery renovations are being led by a team of people in the church who are raising funds and nursery items for those renovations. They are ongoing projects, and the progress looks great.

2 Farmville UMC s Celebrate! Page 2 April, 2011 Church-wide Missions & Outreach planning results: Locally, we will focus this year especially on addressing hunger. We will continue our efforts with the Soup Kitchen and with Benevolent Ministries. We will also look to these areas to address hunger: 1. Are there some shut-ins not members of our congregation who could use a meal on Wednesday nights? 2. Backpack Buddies : this project provides food for children over the weekend that might not otherwise have nutritious meals for those days. Discussed working with other United Methodist Churches in our area on this project. Council agreed we should start gathering information so we can pursue this mission effort. Beyond our church, we want to focus our efforts in widening circles: 1. Beyond Farmville: The Refuge Ministry. 2. Statewide: the Methodist Home for Children. 3. Globally: ZOE Ministry. While people can still work and contribute to any of our wider missions and ministries, our purpose in focusing like this will be to work on a smaller number of projects so they can be done well. We know we can make a difference in these areas, and working together on them can impact the lives of children here and around the world. Look for more details as we implement this focus. Children sing Palm Sunday at both worship services. No choir practice Wednesday, April 27. Consider joining the choir. You will be blessed. Nursing Home Sunday School Dear Sunday School Leaders Once again it is time for our visits to the nursing home in Farmville. Our church has been asked to visit the patients during the months of April and September. Each Sunday school class has been assigned a Sunday during these months. The visitation times are from 10:00 to10:30am each Sunday. Your class is encouraged to visit with and minister to the patients in any way that you feel would be a blessing to them. They would appreciate any effort you could make to encourage them and lift their spirits. Schedule for Sunday School April 3: Children s Sunday School Class April 10: Vereen Sunday School Class April 17: New Beginnings Sunday School Class April 24: Sr. & Jr. High Sunday School Class Thank you for sharing your Christian Love. Ashley Sutton and Janet Clontz From the Youth... We would like to thank our church family for all the help we received for our BBQ Chicken Fundraiser. Due to your generous donations of time, beans, potatoes, chickens, and money, our fundraiser was all profit for our youth fund. We raised just over $2,500. Wow! How awesome is that! This will completely fund the lodging for our trip to Lake Junaluska. More importantly, we will be tithing and making financial gifts to some ministries we feel are very deserving of our support. Again, thank you and God bless you all!! From Sheldon... I too would like to thank the church family for the outstanding support the Youth received during our recent fundraiser. We couldn't have done it without you. God is good and I know you will be blessed for all you have done. Youth Sunday is April 10th. Please make plans to join us that day. This will give the Youth a chance to thank you personally for your support. Also, I believe that you will be blessed for attending the service. Mark the date on your calendars. As Easter approaches, it is my hope and prayer that each of us takes the time to recall the price that was paid to redeem us. Jesus suffered extreme pain and anguish on the cross. More than anything, He suffered in His body, He experienced separation from the Father as He took on our sin. Think about that. Our sin caused Jesus to be separated from the Father. He bore all of the ugliness that is our sin. But, the beauty of Easter is our sin is covered by the blood of the spotless Lamb. No other sacrifices need to be made because the ultimate sacrifice has been made. This Easter may it become alive in your heart and soul that our Redeemer Lives!! He is risen! He is risen indeed! God bless. It s Time to Register for Summer Camp Registration for NC United Methodist Summer Camps 2011 has begun. Information on the exciting programs for children and youth is available in the church office or from your computer at There are a variety of programs options for children beginning as young as 7 and as old as 17 to choose from at each one of the three NC United Methodist Camps. UM Summer Camp experience has long been recognized as a significant milestone in the faith formation process of children and youth. Relationships with God are strengthened and Christian Community is built which as served as a life benchmark for thousands of campers over the years. UM Summer Camping is all of this and is also lots of fun. Pastor Paul s letter explaining our upcoming pastoral change is available in the office for interested members.

4 Farmville UMC s Celebrate! Page 4 April, 2011 The Evangelism Effort & You! There has been a buzz around the new evangelism team, and now they want you to see how you can be a part of growing the kingdom of Christ. God s Word tells us to always be ready to share with people about the Hope we have in Jesus. Some people say I don t know what to say, or How can I share that? The Evangelism Team wants to help you answer that, and has developed 3 things that will help get the conversation started. First, everyone who wants one will get our EMS Kits, your Evangelism Mission Supplies Kit: a Faith Sharing New Testament, a Cross for your pocket, & one of the new church car window decals. We ll use these tools to help you learn how to share your faith, with the decal reminding you that you carry the message of Christ everywhere you go. Second, we re going to have a Laity Dedication Service on May 1 st. Our guest speaker that Sunday at both services will be Ed Mann, our District Lay Leader. We ve asked him to speak because he has a burning passion to see you, the laity of the Church, in vital ministry & mission. During worship that day, we will include the dedication of the new EMS Kits, and the re-dedication of us all in the work of the Church. Third, we ll have a presentation about sharing your faith in everyday conversations with Buck Thompson, also on May 1 st, during our Sunday School hour. Buck is a living example of sharing his faith in powerful and effective ways, and is going to come and share some of his insights into how to share your faith in a natural, conversational, effective and faithful way. Recycled Faith an empty grave is there to prove my Savior Lives! That lyric, from the song Because He Lives reminds us that the cross and the empty tomb- the marks of Jesus works of redemption- are what we hold dear, especially during this time of the year when we celebrate Jesus victory. That song is a song of testimony- a song we sing to remind us of our hope, and to help us share that hope with others. As we celebrate this month the resurrection of Christ, and then turn and dedicate ourselves in new ways to sharing that hope with the world, may God sharpen our song, embolden our witness. Let your Faithlight Shine! May the faith in you become the faith in someone new as we recycle our faith into the lives of people all around us. Jesus is ALIVE!! Hallelujah! Blessings! Pastor Paul Come and See What God is Doing at FUMC! There s a place for YOU! We have vibrant ministries for children, youth and adults where everyone can find their place to grow and be challenged to live out their faith.
