2 Nursing Home Sunday School Dear Sunday School Leaders, Once again it is time for our annual visits to the nursing home in Farmville. Our church has been asked to visit the patients during the months of April and September. Each Sunday school class has been assigned a Sunday during these months. The visitation times are from 10:00 to 10:30am each Sunday. Your class is encouraged to visit with and minister to the patients in any way that you feel would be a blessing to them. They would appreciate any effort you could make to encourage them and lift their spirits Thank you for sharing your Christian love. Fondly, Ashley Sutton, Janet Clontz April 5- New Beginnings; April 12- Vereen Class; April 19- Children s S. S. Classes; April 26- The New Young Adult Class Sunday School teacher Sought WANTED: Nice, caring individuals who love children. The Sunday School Department is in need of a teacher or teachers to teach the Pre-K through First Grade Sunday School. This is a great opportunity for one or more individuals to "team" teach and not be tied down to every Sunday. If you are interested, please contact Sheri Von Schriltz at The Sunday School Department is also in need of substitute teachers for all of the Children's and Youth classes. Consider giving either one of these opportunities a try -you might just enjoy it. Thanks, Sheri von Schriltz, Sunday School Superintendent From the Church Library Merry Christmas! Don t think I m nuts, I know we re in the season of Easter when we celebrate the risen Christ! But remember Pastor Paul s message and video at Christmas reminding us that it s about the cross? Now it seems appropriate at Easter to remember the angels proclaiming the Good News to the shepherds the good news that Jesus came to earth as a baby and showed us how to live and how to love, then suffered on the cross for our sins so that we can have eternal life in Heaven with Him! The Purpose of Christmas by Rick Warren was given to the library recently by Pat Sumrell and Lola Joyner in honor of Nellie Lang s 90th birthday. In this book, Warren shares the gospel message through the Christmas story. Thanks for this great addition to our library. So never mind that it s spring and not winter; never mind that it s Easter time and not Christmas; let s all rejoice in the Good News that is our risen Savior! 4 Thank You Notes To the UMW How can I begin to thank you ladies for honoring me with the UMW Special Mission Recognition? If you were present on that Sunday in December you know I was speechless, which is a rare occurrence. Choosing to recognize me with my family present was particularly thoughtful. My Mom has been active in the United Methodist Women forever and I know how proud she was. Thank you so much for inviting her to share in this wonderful day. Working through the United Methodist Women has been a wonderful experience. Sharing these special ministries with so many of the outstanding ladies in our church as provided me the opportunity to make loving friendships. this gift for ministries with women, children & youth certainly touches each of our hearts and working as United Methodist Women, we can make a difference! To the Girls of Circle IV I love you all! Dear Pastor Paul and my Church Family, In Christ, Harriett Baker ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just need to give you an update. Go back to the doctor on Wednesday ( ) so hope he will tell me I can put some weight on that foot! Thanks to all of you I really think I m on my way to recovery. It has been a long haul! I have tried to thank each of you for all the equipment such as the walker, stick for picking up items and the lift chair which made my life easier. Also many thanks for the food, cards, gifts, flowers and prayers. Seems like when one vase of flowers began to look bad, here would come another fresh one! Your cards have meant so much. In our busy world it is so hard to add one more thing to our daily schedule and that s what makes me Praise God for all of you and your caring spirit. I have had a long time for my soul to be still and listen! I know I will appreciate everything in my life more and not take things for granted. Enjoy the snow from afar and never go out in it again!! I need to get well so I can help Nancy when her new grandbaby gets here! In Jesus Name, Eloise Carraway It s Time to Register for Summer Camp! Registration for NC United Methodist Summer Camps 2009 has begun. Information on the exciting programs for children and youth is available in the church office or from your computer at There are a variety of programs options for children beginning as young as 7 and as old as 17 to choose from at each one of the three NC United Methodist Camps. UM Summer Camping is all of this and is also lots of fun. Information and registration forms are in the church office. Scholarships are available. Register Today! Relay for Life Dear Church, This is Trena Johnston. I hope this finds everyone well. I realize that we as a church this year do not have a Relay for Life team. However, we do have a small team at Curves. I know many of you have purchased bows, luminaries, torches, and attended churchsponsored Relay fundraising events, such as dinners, luncheons, and others. I come to you to ask if you would please support our team this year. First, the team members from the church are myself, my husband Pat, daughter Amy, Ann Cleveland, Joy Fields, Cindy Parks, Janet Clontz, and Ashley Sutton. We would love to have more of you on the team to help raise funds as well as to walk with us from 6:00pm Friday night, May 8th through noon on Saturday May 9th. Please also support us by donating unwanted items for our Yard Sale to be held at Curves on April 25th (yes, it s Dogwood Festival time) from 7:00am until 1:00pm. If you wish, please also plan on attending the Yard Sale because we will have lots of unique items as well as baked goods to offer. I have talked with Cindy and Joy as well as Pastor Paul about doing a Car Wash to benefit Relay as well. I thought this would be a lot of fun for the Youth Group, but wanted to run it by the parents first. We thought we d have it right here at the church. I thought that May 2nd from 10:00am through 2:00pm would be sufficient for us to get to a few folks. We also need a brave male volunteer for the womanless beauty pageant.. We will help you look your best and will get donation canisters/jars to help raise your funds, since this determines who the winner will be. Please let me know what you all think and see one of us for your donations, luminaries, bows, Fight Like a Girl short or long sleeved t-shirts or hooded sweatshirts, or anything else. Thank you all in advance for your support. Page 4 Celebrate! April, 2009 Farmville United Methodist Church

6 A Message from Pastor Paul... Easter : Why it has Life and Death Importance Would you just look at this MESS! Who s going to clean this up? College Students and Local Churches unite to present Rock opera The Third Day. Wright Auditorium at ECU. FREE Admission Sat. April 18 at 7:30pm and Sun. Apr. 19 at 4pm. -A cast of 50 voices: college students and members of area churches, including ours. This 1Hr 15Min rock opera takes the Biblical story from just after the crucifixion of Jesus through the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The musical styles within The Third Day cover the spectrum, from rock to pop to gospel to jazz. A love offering will be taken for the Wesley Foundation of Greenville (The United Methodist Campus Ministry at ECU). ECU parking is open to the public both days. More information can be found at Those are words I always dreaded as a kid. It usually meant There goes my Saturday. I still dread these words, but it is usually about something much more important than a messy bedroom. We see hearts ripped apart by grief, marriages torn apart by conflict, plans down the drain by tumbling finances, doubts that linger, decisions that are tough. We stare at the carnage and cry out This is a mess! Who can clean this up? There are basically 3 types of people in this world (which are you?). One thinks we are on our own life is messy, so either get used to it, get over it, or get yourself together to defeat it. If anyone is going to help me in life, it is simply me. This is also the type of person who really doesn t think much about god at all, and may be simply living for the pleasures of today. Addictions, distractions or simple blunt self-centeredness rule this person s lifestyles. The second knows better. These folks know that only by trusting in something beyond themselves, can they get through. They might try the world s We-can-all-find-our-owngod, or some form of one of the world s other religions. All of those other religious or spiritual answers lack one thing: Jesus, the Son of God, dying on the cross and rising through the empty tomb. We know God through the lens of a cross where God in Love took on our pain and transformed it into life- defeating death itself in order to bring us everlasting life. The third type of person knows they are no better than the worldly person, or the spiritually confused person they simply have experienced the power of Christ. God looked at the mess we make of life, with all its brokenness and hurt, and said I ll clean it all up. The very Creator of the universe says to us I ve got this one. It s on me. Those first 2 life choices lead to nothingness to death itself. You can choose to be transformed to LIFE. God has made a way for YOU through the cross and empty tomb. If you ask God, God will give you a permanent gift of Life & Love that doesn t even compare to today s messes. "But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus."
