1 THE SPIRE News of New Haven United Methodist Church Making Disciples for Jesus Christ in the world, by being God s Love in Action 5603 S. New Haven Avenue, Tulsa, OK VOLUME XXVII Number 17 May 5, 2017 As you can imagine, as the calendar moves closer and closer to June 4th, my thoughts are beginning to focus on our upcoming move. Sigh. It s hard to believe we have been living in the church parsonage for eight years already. Thank you for the incredible blessing YOUR parsonage has been to our family and for hosting so many wonderful church events! The thing about moving, even if you are only going a short distance like we are, is that almost everything needs to be boxed up! And not only does everything need to be boxed up but then when you get to the new place, it needs to be unpacked and unboxed. The next step is spending quite a bit of time trying to figure out what is what and where it all What great fun our annual Undie Sunday event is! It s underway, as we continue to collect new underwear of all sizes for our partner in ministry, Project Elf. Project Elf is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which today serves every Cindy s Chalkboard belongs. It also becomes a great mystery if you don t label the boxes... it could take days to figure out where things are! Oh my! As we begin the process of looking through what we have, one of the things that I ve noticed about our moving adventures is that some of the boxes from our previous move had not yet been opened! So, here s my question (to us). Why are we hanging onto things we seem to have no use for? Maybe we do this because we think someday we will need it! People in Biblical times were always on the move. Abraham was constantly in transition and nomadically moving around the country. The Old Tulsa Public School, some private schools, and has over 800 volunteers, i.e., Elves. Elves are women and men who volunteer and/or donate essential items to Tulsa-area students in need. Moving Day Cometh Undie Sunday Continues! Testament talks about people constantly moving. As often as constantly moving. As often as they moved, doubt that they they moved, I doubt that they hung on to useless, unnecessary boxes! hung on to useless, unnecessary boxes! I m going to be pondering this idea as Peter and I approach our move to the District Parsonage in just a few short I m going to be pondering this weeks. The blessing is, no idea as Peter and I approach matter where any of us move, our move to the District Parsonage in just a few short whether it is moving to another city, or a new neighborhood or weeks. The blessing is, no possibly just moving to another matter where any of us move, pew... wherever you move, remember whether it is moving to another city, or a new that neighborhood God is with you. or possibly just moving to another pew... wherever you move, remember In our days that of God transition, is with we you. all have the blessing and opportunity to be transformed! In our days of transition, we all have the blessing and opportunity to be transformed! With appreciation and thanksgiving for each of you. - Pastor Cindy Let s become elves by participating in the Undie Sunday drive that continues until May 14. Collection containers will be located outside the sanctuary. All underwear should be brand new. All sizes are accepted.

3 MEET OUR YOUTH.... BAILEY SARTAIN Hello church My name is Bailey Sartain I am a junior I have been going to I just recently turned 18 on April 26th I have been attending New Haven for 11 years. I was baptized and confirmed at 13. I am very girly! One of my favorite things to do is running. I have been on the track team since 7th grade; one of my favorite past times is to read a book. You usually can see me around church a lot whether it is for VBS or helping with the mission Sunday or working in the nursery! I love being involved at this church ~ I also dance in footprints as well as helping speak the sermon on youth Sunday. I really enjoy going to district camp and CYME every summer ~ the lake is one of my favorite summer activities~ I can knee board, waterski and even ride on the inner-tube! I really have a love for this church and all the people in it! You probably know my mom Kelly and my little brother JJ ~they are really awesome! I love my family and all my church family too! Also my last favorite thing is getting to go to prom and being on homecoming court!:) Christmas is my FAVORITE holiday so of course that means while many like Frosty, I m definitely an Olaf girl! And just so you know there are only 238 days till Christmas if you were counting. : ) From Patrick Well where to start with this young woman. I m so blessed to have been part of this, the sunset of her journey with the NHUMY. I know many of you got to watch her from a young age grow into an incredible young lady, and you need to know that God has just continued His work in spite of any challenge that she has been faced with. Her faith, like her heart for this church and especially her family is monumental in size and one of the reasons I know God has some incredibly great calling for her as she starts her senior year and beyond this coming year! She is an unquestioned leader, and when she talks everyone wants to hear (except JJ, her little brother). She s very insightful, and you won t find a young person that will work harder for what they have and do achieve in their academic life. In short, I m inspired regularly by the power of God working through her in what she considers everyday and ordinary that strike me as spectacular and celebratory. I find it joyful, and exciting to have been a part of this chapter in her life, and our youth have been blessed by her presence. You can thank me later, but you should really take some time to re-acquaint yourself or get to know for the first time, Bailey Sartain. Blessings, Bailey and Patrick

4 DAY SCHOOL FUNDRAISER FOR PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENTS Our Day School has an ongoing fundraiser. We are selling bracelets to raise money to make improvements to our playgrounds and purchase equipment. As you know this will benefit our school and church children, as well as children from our neighborhood who come to play. The bracelets are made by me, under the name Foxy Arm Candy. The school will receive 80% from the sale. The other 20% is used to purchase supplies so I can replenish the inventory. Most of the bracelets are one of a kind! The cost is $10 per bracelet. Those with more ornate charms are $15. The bracelets make wonderful Mother's Day, Grandmother's Day, Birthday and Graduation gifts! Teacher Appreciation is coming, so you can say thanks for all of their hard work with Foxy Arm Candy!!! I also offer boy and girl size bracelets and there is no extra cost for resizing! I am in the gym Monday through Friday 8:30-9:30 am. After school beginning at 3:30 pm and ending at 6:00 pm. Mrs. West, our School Age Director can assist you. This Sunday I will be in the Nursery area from 8:30-11:30 am. Due to back surgery I won't be available on Sunday's until the doctor releases me for work. However, the Day School staff can assist you during to above mentioned times. Please support our children inside our building and our neighborhood by purchasing some Foxy Arm Candy!!! Sharing the joy, Ms. Paula VBS 2017 Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God! 5 Mission Corner Dear Missy, I m ready to par-tay! Where can I put on my dancing shoes and enjoy myself (oh, and help out with missions too)? Signed, Ready to Party Dear Ready to Party, A birthday party for Murdock Villa is happening at noon on Thursday, May 25. A ministry moment was given on April 30 to help us learn more about this important outreach. Murdock Villa is a six story apartment building at 828 S. Wheeling in Tulsa. It is a Tulsa Housing Authority residence for disabled adults, and is a supportive community unto itself. Each month, a birthday party is held for the residents. Murdock Villa has been a mission of New Haven since the year of the founding of these parties in The New Haven Mission Committee has sponsored every party in May and the Susanna Circle of the UMW has sponsored every July party. The party in May is a luncheon with entertainment. There is a sign-up sheet on the hallway table to help plan the meal, bring food and/or to help serve. If you would like more information on Murdock Villa or would like to help with the birthday parties, please contact Lou Lindsey at or at louise-lindsey@utulsa.edu. Party on! Missy Come and Experience It!
