1 THE SPIRE News of New Haven United Methodist Church Making Disciples for Jesus Christ in the world, by being God s Love in Action 5603 S. New Haven Avenue, Tulsa, OK VOLUME XXVII Number 41 October 9, 2017 Good morning! You know, life is about choices. We make hundreds of choices every day. You get up in the morning and choose what you will wear. You choose which way to drive to work in the morning. At work you make decisions that choose between multiple possibilities. When you get Rev. James Graham home you choose to have dinner, and either choose to do housework, or sit down in front of the TV to rest. Even then you have dozens of channels to chose from with a wide range of shows to watch, unless of course you have cable then you have 128 channels and nothing to watch! I ve known people who are constantly complaining about their bad luck. Everything always seems to go wrong in their life. Well, I ve come to realize that life happens... And the difference between happy people and unhappy people are the choices they make. Things happen that are beyond our control, and there is nothing we can do about it, but WE CHOOSE how to receive those events. For example, I woke up this morning not feeling very well. My joints were swollen and I was achy. I had a choice, I could be unhappy that I don t feel well and let that ruin the rest of this beautiful day that God has given me, or I can choose to be happy that I woke up! I have a beautiful day to experience! God has given me one more day! We choose to be happy or unhappy. This morning, I chose to have a great day. I gave my wife a big hug, kissed her as she headed to work, and got myself ready for whatever God has in store for me. In the Psalms we are reminded over and over again to Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good and his love endures forever! Thankfully yours, Pastor James

2 BOY SCOUT TROOP 16 Boy Scout Troop 16 is proud of its nearly 55 year history with New Haven United Methodist Church. During this time, over 100 scouts have earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout through Troop 16, with five new Eagle Scouts having earned the rank within the last year. Troop 16 meets each Tuesday night in the New Haven gymnasium and camps each month in sunshine, rain, and even snow, but scouting is more than just camping. It can be better described as youth leadership development in an outdoor setting. Our youth plan our calendar, determine our activities and lead each other with an overall goal for all to succeed. In the past year, our troop has planned camp outs to Camp Garland, Zink Ranch, Camp Hale, the Illinois River for canoeing, kayaking and fishing,, the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, KS and Snow Creek, MO for skiing, to name a few. Troop 16 volunteers at all Carnegie Pack 67 s large activities including Pine Wood Derby, rally events, and Blue & Gold banquet as well as volunteering out in the community at Salvation Army and at home with New Haven on various clothing drives, respite care and grounds enhancements. The scouts are committed to Duty to God and Country, as well as fun and adventure. Thank you New Haven for your support and we look forward to a continued growing relationship together.

3 Corner Mission Dear Missy: Just exactly what is this Mountain of Food? I can t imagine what everyone is talking about! Signed, Questioning without a Vision Dear Questioning: The Mountain of Food is a mission-sponsored event to benefit Tulsa s Restore Hope Ministries. This project began at New Haven in Our efforts have inspired six other congregations in Tulsa to undertake similar projects; our Mountain is even pictured on Restore Hope s website. We have contributed well over 100,000 pounds of food since the beginning and over 9,600 pounds last year alone. If you do the math that means our Mountain has grown over the years. Restore Hope s mission is to restore families in financial crisis to economic and spiritual vitality. Their programs are in three areas: hunger reduction, homelessness prevention and hope promotion along with seasonal events such as school supply drives, Thanksgiving groceries and Christmas gifts for kids. The Mountain will help Restore Hope replenish Restore Hope s pantry so they can help more families with their food needs. In the Tulsa area, 29% of households with children are unable to provide their families with sufficient food! Restore Hope is a 4 star (highest possible) charity on Charity Navigator and earned 100% in Accountability and Transparency. This affiliate of the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference so we are confident our support is both needed and appropriately used. Funds our congregation members contribute are used to purchase food through the lowest cost providers, which then restocks the pantry at Restore Hope. As needy clients come in for help they are given food to feed their family. You ll see the Mountain start growing in the sanctuary on October 21. Blessings, Missy Experience It! Come and
