1 November, 2016 Weekly TV Broadcast Mondays, 7:00 p.m. Charter Channel 986 Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m. HBC Channel 20 We are Central to Winona, disciples of Jesus living a vibrant faith. Stay Informed and Get Involved People have asked me if I am available to be considered for the call process for the next pastor here at Central Lutheran. I feel God brought us together during this interim time, I have loved my time here with you, and we are doing good ministry together! Pastor Lanny Westphal Having said that, for the integrity of both our interim ministry together and your future call process, I am not available for consideration as your next pastor. Here are three reasons: Interim ministry is distinct from long-term ministry. It is frequently confusing when a pastor switches roles. Interim pastors often need to make diffcult decisions. They need the freedom to do this without wondering if it would affect a congregation s willingness to call them, or worrying that it may jeopardize their long-term relationship with some members. Potential candidates often hesitate to interview for a call if there is a candidate who is already known by the congregation. I do not want to limit your choice of candidates in any way. You need a fresh start! However, even though my time here is short-term, this doesn t mean I will be slacking off! I will give you my full energy and attention as long as I am here. What we are doing now together in these few months can positively affect Central for many years. This will help you recruit and retain a good pastor. I am confident that God is already preparing just the right candidate to be your next pastor! You are in my daily prayers as you continue in the interim and call processes. Please know that you are wonderful congregation, a community of faith filled with God s saints. See you in church! 259 W. Wabasha Winona, MN

4 News and Information Continued from page 3 Central Lutheran Foundation supports stewardship appeal The Foundation Board has provided a small grant of up to $2500 to cover the printing, design and program costs of Central s participation in the Stewardship for All Seasons program. This program support has made possible the fall stewardship appeal, Refocus, Renew and Revitalize, plus a variety of other ways for Central members to share their time, talent and treasure in 2017 and in coming years. Members of Central s stewardship task force include Jeremy Johnson and Susan Cooper, co-chairs, Sally Bentson, Mike Bernatz, Myrna Olson, Jerry Whetstone, Kelly Dicke, consultant, and Pastor Westphal. As we prepare for our next pastor, our response to this appeal is one way to demonstrate that we are focused on advancing our ministries at Central. Consider making a regular automatic gift to Central. You can make an automatic gift to Central Lutheran Church from your savings or checking account once a week, once a month or twice a month. Pick up the form in the entrance and turn it into the church office. (To continue participation in the offering during worship, you may write Automatic Giving on an envelope and put it into the offering plate if you wish.) No extra fees are charged you or Central for making your gift. Help us stay in touch! In the contribution statement which was mailed to you in October, there was a card for you to update your contact info and send back to the church office. And of course, please notify the office at centluth3@gmail.com or anytime your phone or changes. Let s stay connected! For your convenience You can now find the weekly printed announcements on the Central web site on the same page as the newsletters so that you can stay informed about what is happening at your church! 6 From Pastor Corrine Winona Lutheran Campus Center Fall Retreat 2016 Last weekend our two student ministers, Taylor and Angela, led a fall retreat at Good Earth Village Camp. The retreat is a chance for students to get away and take a break for 24 hours smack-dab in the middle of the semester. This year students enjoyed pizza at Dream Acres, then watched the movie Freedom Writers on Friday night once they arrived at camp. Following the movie, each one was gifted with a pocket notebook to write their own story; they discussed the stories of their lives as well as images of God. The next morning a Winona artist drove to camp in order to continue the image of God theme by leading impressionist painting. Students painted a scene from Good Earth Village, adding their own touches, which included wood burning on the back of the homemade canvases......and this goes beyond retreat Our hope is that when students look at their painting they will not only remember a nice weekend, but the blessing of being created in the image of God. Our hope is that when students find their pocket notebook in a box ten years from now, they will remember that their story is not done, that God continues to imprint their images on the palms of God's hands. We are Central to Winona, disciples of Jesus living a vibrant faith. 259 W. Wabasha Winona, MN

CLC Church Council minutes Tuesday September 20 th, 2016 Present: Pastor Westphal, Steve Hacken, Paul, Ness, Dian Biesanz, Marie Holmquist, Judy Davis, Carol Kramer, and Ed Berkley (by phone). Judy Davis called meeting to order followed by prayer from Pastor Westphal. Approval of the agenda motion made by Paul and seconded by Carol, motion carried. Approval of August 24 th, 2017 council minutes motion by Paul, second by Dian, motion carried. Endorsement of the financial report to the congregation was discussed with the consensus that Paul be the person to present this and field any questions about the budget. With the congregational survey complete, we were all in agreement that responses were good, helpful and thought provoking. The overall content of the responses will be shared briefly with those attending the forum. We were all in agreement that formation of committees should be considered important to get people involved. However, being careful to not over committee. How often and how many committees and in what areas these committees should concentrate is a concern and we will work on this as we proceed. We believe that the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday of each month is a time that should work for committee meetings. Approval of staff reports. Discussion and approval of Feast Coordinator Job Description. Motion to adjourn made by Steve and second by Marie, motion carried. Executive session We are Central to Winona, disciples of Jesus living a vibrant faith. 259 W. Wabasha Winona, MN
9 Reports to the CLC Council, September 20, 2016 Rev. Lanny Westphal, interim pastor Worship: The schedule for worship services has been set for the school year. Weeknight services will be at 6:30 pm, and extra or special Sunday services (Christmas Day, New Year s Day, and Easter) will be at 9:15 am. Staff re-alignment: Connie will phase out of doing the service & fellowship activities to concentrate on office work. As part of that transition, I will meet with the Social Concerns/ Mission Committee. Erik will phase out of some of his additional responsibilities to concentrate on getting people involved in music for worship services. Communications: The staff is reviewing, tweaking and streamlining our printed, oral and digital communications. Personnel Committee: Following the provisions of your bylaws, I have (re) appointed for two-year terms these three members of this committee: Chris Wilmot, Jerry Whetstone and Myrna Olson. (Judy will consult with Ed about the three members that the president will appoint.) I will begin doing staff evaluations later in October, with a focus on goals for the coming year. Stewardship Task Force: Plans are proceeding well with 8 members on the task force: Susan Cooper and Jeremy Johnson as appeal co-leaders, Myrna Olson coordinating the brunch on Nov. 20, Sally Bentson as appeal coordinator, Kelly Dicke as consultant, Jerry Whetstone, Mike Bernatz, and me as members. Jeremy, Kelly and I attended the second seminar in Owatonna on Sept. 15. The staff is revamping the Give web page to make online giving easier, and we will start publicizing the automatic monthly withdrawals to encourage more regular giving throughout the year. Questions about the call process: In 2015, people got the mistaken impression that Central s agreement with Cedar Valley would need to be ended for Central to call an assistant pastor. Congregational Forum this Sunday, Sept. 25 Looking Back Looking Ahead : Financial report for 2015 and 2016 Paul Ness, treasurer. Results of the forum survey Angela Gotz, call committee. Congregational Forum on Oct. 16 Our Hopes for the Future : Brief review of CLC timeline & history. Overview of Ministry Site Profile call committee. Congregational Forum on Nov. 13 Youth Ministry Presenter - Mary Kay DuChene, Assistant to the Bishop Organize more committees and establish a committee night: To minimize the possibility of burning out your members or next pastor, you may want to designate one evening as a committee night for several committees and task forces to meet simultaneously. That way, no one could be on more than one committee, and then I (and your future pastor) could visit several the same evening rather than tie up several evenings. Synod meetings: Sept. 26, Boundaries workshop to be attended by Kelly, Dennis, Marilyn and me. Oct. 13, New to the synod gathering attended by me. Child Care Center Kelly Dicke The Fall Program begins... As the summer program wraps up, we sent 10 children off to school. Some returning, and some starting Kindergarten. The fall program began with 15 children transitioning into their newest adventure and classrooms. With the addition of a new Lead Teacher in our Preschool 1 Classroom, the transition for all was smooth. Fall is, also, the start of Wednesdays Chapel, where we offer 3 different chapel lessons for the different classes and age ranges to give children an opportunity for the Chapel experience. Erik Floan -- Director of Worship, Music & Arts Wednesday Night Workshop began with a healthy 17 7th graders - up from 4 eighth graders. This almost didn t happen given the lack of current contact information for these families. Many thanks to council volunteers and pastor Westphal for helping bridge that gap. I set up a WNW Participant page on the CLC website: Pastor Westphal has helped streamline communications and calendar Deo Gracias! I continue to invest about five hours per week as webmaster and Friday enews. WNW communications and coordination is an added piece I am happy to help with during this Interim. 10 The Call Committee is continuing its work on the Ministry Site Profile, which will be shown to pastoral candidates for the Directing Pastor position. We recently participated in the forum held on Sunday, October 16 th and discussed our progress in the call process. As part of the forum, those in attendance created a timeline showing meaningful events from the last 25 years that have impacted Central s present and future. We encourage you to check out the wall in Grace Hall where you can see the timeline. This timeline will remain posted through Nov. 13 so please add your own ideas! After creation of the timeline, the Ministry Site Profile format was reviewed. A copy of the Profile form is attached for your information. During our presentation, those present were asked for their input with regard to Section 13. Mutual Expectations. This is one of the more important sections of the Profile, as it outlines what we expect of the new Directing Pastor and what the new Directing Pastor can expect from the congregation during his/her first year. We received valuable input from the persons in attendance and we also want to give those who could not attend the forum the opportunity to provide their insights. We have provided space below for you to list your responses. Please return your responses to the Church office by Sunday, November 6 th. We appreciate your assistance in the call process and ask for your continued prayerful support. 13. Mutual Expectations Please list the five primary activities that you wish your new Directing Pastor to give special attention to during the first year of his or her ministry at Central Lutheran: A. B. C. D. E. Please list the five ways that this congregation will support and encourage the Directing Pastor during the first year in order to help her or him accomplish these responsibilities: A. B.
