Serve on the Call Committee As announced at the April 17 Annual Meeting, a Call Committee is being convened for the purpose of calling a Directing Pastor to Central Lutheran Church. Eric Johnsrud has accepted the position of chair of this Call Committee. At this time, the Church Council is inviting Voting Members of the congregation to express their interest in serving on this call committee. We are hopeful that a committee will be comprised of a representative cross section of the congregation. Voting members of the congregation are defined under the Church Constitution as follows: Voting members are confirmed members. Such confirmed members, during the current or preceding calendar year, shall have communed in this congregation and shall have made a contribution of record to this congregation. - Constitution Chapter 8, article 1. If you wish to be considered for this critical role, please contact Church Council president Ed Berkley by phone at , or at edberkley@charter.net. We are charting the course of the future of our church. We ask for your thoughtful consideration to serve on the Call Committee. 259 W. Wabasha Winona, MN

2 The Feast An update on the Feast meeting held April 19. The group met to decide how to keep the Feast going. We will not have the Feast from Memorial Week thru Labor Day. Also, because we do not have enough manpower to sustain a meal every Wed., in the Fall we will only do the 1 st & 3 rd Wed. Rita Lehnertz has contacted area church s about doing a meal once or twice a year. She has found some interest. We would use those churches on the 2 nd & 4 th Wed if we have enough response. As always, we are looking for more help, cooks & leaders. Please consider helping with this ministry of Central Lutheran. We feed people who are hungry for food and others who are hungry for community. 3 Support CLC Youth Summer Mission! Help support CLC Summer Missions by contributing to the Envelope Campaign : From the narthex easel chose a numbered envelope, contribute the $ amount of that number, then anticipate a wonderful personal letter from a Youth Mission Participant sharing their experience. About the Mission: Our mission trip destination for 2016 is Lake Traverse, staying in Sisseton South Dakota. We chose the Lake Traverse site because of Winona s own history with Native Americans (Dakota) gives the kids an opportunity to spend a week experiencing and interacting with an active work site/reservation (Sioux). On Sunday July 31 Central will prayerfully send on mission11 youth and 3 chaperones, returning August 5th. Questions? Hosting is shared between three families for 3-4 months each. It's a short period of time, but can result in long-term friendships and an expanded meaning of "family." Host responsibilities include providing food, shelter, guidance and acceptance to a teenager. The students will attend Winona Senior High School during the school year. The Winona Rotary Club will pay for school lunches and provide a high level of local support to the student and host families. 5 Worship Matters: Robed in White Erik Floan, director of Worship, Music, & Arts Happy Easter! Still. Yes, it s still Easter Easter began at Sundown Saturday March 26 (Easter Vigil) and ends 50 days later at the Festival of Pentecost (Pente: 50), May 15. So the Alleluia banner, the Easter kneeler, the White Vestments (what the pastor wears) stay with us until Pentecost, when the liturgical color changes to Red. Over the first half of our 50-day Eastertide the Sunday readings focus on encounters with the Risen Christ: In the locked room with Thomas, On the beach with Peter leaping into the water while Jesus grills breakfast on the beach. For the remainder of Eastertide the readings convey a mystical tone. In the appointed Second Reading, from the Book of Revelation, visions abound: APRIL 17, FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: After this I looked, and there was a great multitude standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white (Revelation 7:9) APRIL 24, FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. (Revelation 21:1-5) MAY 1, SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city And there will be no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and thy will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:1-5) MAY 8, SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER: Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they will have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by the gates. (Revelation 22:14) Those listening with literal ears will wonder why we jabber on about sheep, games with thrones, clean laundry, renewed urban streets & streams, and improved lighting. However, the writers of Revelation and the architects and artists for Central Lutheran help us through abundant signs and symbols: those with eyes, let them see; with ears, let them hear. We understand the Lamb on the Throne symbolizes Christ s sacrifice and reign (expressed at Central on the front of the Altar and in a panel of the Easter window, first window on the right). Artists often depict Saints and Martyrs robed in white, carrying a Palm branch; at worship the pastor is white literally robed in white the Eastertide white chasuble and stole highlight this. And water, water, everywhere: Flowing down Jerusalem s usually parched streets and a dozen baptisms new saints! right here washed and robed in white. So Happy Easter Still. See you in church. 6 Exploring the Gospel Sunday mornings at 9:15 Grace Hall (left side as you enter Grace Hall) All are welcome! Join us each Sunday as we discuss the Gospel reading for the day. Have You Seen Jesus? No, really, have you? We have a mystery: The Icon (painting) of Jesus which for several years hung above the sanctuary entry candle stand is missing! It disappeared in February and, sadly, has not been seen since. The Icon was hand-painted and donated to Central. To have a similar new icon made would cost $ After two months asking around, the Icon s return seems unlikely. So Thinking of a Memorial gift to honor a loved one? Maybe you have been blessed with a largerthan-anticipated Tax Refund? Or you simply miss Jesus. Let s talk. And next time, to be safe, we ll definitely make sure it stays on the wall. 7 SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS I would like to thank all of our teachers and helpers for their dedication in leading our youngest members in their faith journey this year. I am happy to announce that we have most of our positions filled for next year's program. We are still in need of 2 co-teachers plus a helper for our Preschool class. We will also need another co-teacher for the 3rd & 4th grade (combined class). We are also in need for a superintendent to organize, order curriculum, set the calendar, lead orientation of new teachers, plan RALLY DAY and special events. If you are one who is gifted in organization, leadership, and are internet savvy and love children and would like to share your talents and love for Jesus with our youngest members and their families, this is where you will shine. I hope you will prayerfully consider this worthwhile ministry. I have been blessed getting to know all of these dedicated teachers the past 3 years and I feel that the time is right for me to step down and let someone else take the reigns and bring forth new and fresh ideas. It is my hope and prayer that someone or two will come forth and share in this very important ministry. I will mentor anyone/or persons interested in the superintendent position for the Sunday school program. I will be available in May and June to work with them. Please join me on May 15th for TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY. We want to honor Deb Berhow, our Kindergarten teacher, and Karen Bunkowski, Preschool teacher as they will be retiring from teaching. Also, Erin VanBeek, our co-teacher for Preschool will be moving on as Secretary to the church council. We are so thankful for their faithful service to the children of CLC. I also want to mention that the Sunday school children will be singing at the 10:30 service on May 15th. I also created a Central Lutheran Weekly enews to be published each Friday using existing CLC MailChimp capabilities. I enjoy this kind of work, and would like to open a dialog with Personnel & Council about making ongoing Webmaster & Communications a part of my official duties. Holy Week & Easter I am grateful for the time and energy people give toward Central s worship life during Holy Week: Musicians, Assisting Ministers, Acolytes, Lectors, Communion Assistants, Altar Guild, and Ushers. Special thanks to Hannah Circle for coordinating flowers, and all who donated and decorated. Wednesday Service of Healing attendance was impacted by a late-season blizzard. Pastor Davick stepped in to lead the service since Pastor Li opted to remain in Rochester. Maundy Thursday & Good Friday were well-attended. Saturday Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday attendance was off primarily due to children & families absent due to Winona Public Schools break - we knew and anticipated this going into Holy Week, however. Of note: Lack of assigned ushers at Easter Vigil led to an offering not being taken; all other needed worship volunteers were in place. Central Music & Arts Series Bach Society of Minnesota presented Belgian violinist Sigiswald Kuijken in Baroque Music for Strings on Saturday April 2, marking the conclusion of this season s three BSM concerts. It also marked the final Winona performance led by outgoing artistic director Paul Boenke, whose idea it was to bring BSM to Winona. Central was a site for the April 16 Winona County Historical Society s Glorious Glass tour. Bev Spande organized the event by recruiting on-site hospitality volunteers, working through CLC site logistics, and prodding me to update and print CLC Worship Arts/Architecture/Windows guides. Organ demonstrations greeted guests at the top of each hour. Tour hours were 11:00 am - 5:00 pm Community Organ Concert: Sunday May 15, 3:00 pm. Celebrate the King of Instruments! Performers include Central s own Erik Floan as well as community members Sam Simataa, Daniel Lewis (Winona State University, First Baptist), Larry Finke (St. Martin s Lutheran), Eric Heukeshoven (St. Mary s University), and guests John Varona (Rochester) and David Lim (U. of Iowa). Small Group, Social & Service Ministries-Connie Larson: Who knew when Fred Welke started talking last August about doing something for Pastor Davick s 80th birthday, how much we would need to come together last week and celebrate as a congregation something positive! Must have been the spirit working. Fred and Cindy made a wonderful meal and were able to pull off the surprise. Thank you! Small Group Ministries will meet next week to look at ideas for the coming year. We have discussed a Fall retreat, more We are Central to Winona, disciples of Jesus living a vibrant faith W. 10 Staff Reports continued from page 9 meals together and are always looking for new ideas. The Feast Group is meeting this evening to discuss the future of our community meal. While it is hard to maybe see it end, the fact that we do not have enough cooks to be in charge continues to drain our energy. The Council is invited to the meeting to give input and help us decide. I will an update tomorrow to let you know our decision after tonight s meeting. Social Concerns conducted another successful Church Challenge. We collected 416# of food and $4448. in cash. Together our grand total was 9312#. May will be the start of our wedding season, with three weddings scheduled for the month. The wonderful news is that the office has been inundated with calls for baptisms! Between April & May we have ten baptisms scheduled, including a set of twins. I am looking for help with the Plant Exchange in May. I am hopping to mentor someone to be in charge after this year. I will always be willing to help, but would like to see someone else be in charge. As someone who has recently spent 2 months in a wheelchair while working here at CLC, I d be glad to give some input on handicap accessibility. Child Care Center-Kelly Dicke: Building trust, faith, and relationships with Winona s youngest community members and their families are our top priorities. Spring Parent Conferences: The Child Care Center will be conducting spring Parent- Teacher Conferences from April 18-April 29 th. In conjunction with our conferences, we are hosting a Scholastic Book Fair to offer families low cost books and encourage literacy at all ages. With the Book Fair, the Center will earn free books for classrooms. We are looking at a very positive experience for our families with our spring conferences and a successful Book Fair. Budgets: March showed a positive for period activity of slightly over $4000. Compared to budget, the total income was slightly and expenses were under projected figures. April should be a similar financial situation as we are preparing for a 3 pay period month in July while we monitor finances closely. Enrollment: The following is a breakdown of enrollment including full time and part time. Infant Classroom 15, Toddler Classroom 22, Preschool Classroom 21, Preschool 2 Classroom 21, Total Enrolled 79 Throughout the year we have children transitioning to new classrooms. All child transitions to the next classroom at developmentally appropriate times are scheduled and new enrollment is ready when we have vacancies. Our earliest availability is fall 2017 for all classrooms. We have limited vacancies throughout the next year but need to accept only the ages that work within our framework. Staffing: We have 3 staff graduating and moving on in their journey. The center is interviewing to find their replacements. Currently we have 35 but that will be reducing with natural attrition. The center will be conducting annual reviews the month of May for all staff.
