Dear Members and Friends of Central Lutheran Church, Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! This wonderful Easter reality changes everything. This news is too good not to share. There is no power in the world that is stronger than the love of God in Christ, no situation beyond God s ability to bring life and hope. We see the world, and our own lives, differently because we recognize the working of God to bring about new beginning and reconciliation in all circumstances. We no longer have to be afraid of anything, including the speaking of difficult truths. The purpose of the interim time is for congregations to dedicate a season to reflect on their ministries, commitments, strengths and weaknesses. It is also a time to look toward the future, casting a vision for the future that the congregation believes is consistent with God s calling and purpose. Only after taking a prayerful, thorough, and honest look at themselves can a congregation be open to calling a new pastor to lead them in making the vision a reality. I have enjoyed my time with you. Thank you for welcoming me. I regret that the commute from Rochester has turned out to be more than I can juggle. Even though I will not be continuing with you on the transition journey, the council continues working hard to address areas of congregational organization, budgeting, staffing and mission that need to be developed as you move forward together. They have dedicated themselves to this work, investing many hours, gathering and interpreting information that will provide a foundation on which to build. They are re-convening church committees to accomplish the work of the church. These past 8 weeks we have begun to lay the groundwork for the self-study process and important decisions that lie ahead. Your continued participation is important. Your participation makes all the difference! Central Lutheran is a faithful, committed and loving church because its members are faithful, committed and loving. Your input is essential in shaping the future of Central! It is in our conversations together that the Holy Spirit works, to spark new ideas and bring forth creative approaches. Please take part in the self-study process, which will include a survey, small group conversations, and large group forums. Your new interim pastor will guide you through the process. Easter offers us the possibility of new beginning and new life, every day; life that is purposeful, meaningful, and joyful. This is true for each of us, individually and collectively, as the body of Christ in this place and time. May Central find renewal, joy and purpose in the months ahead. Grace and peace, Pastor Susan Li 259 W. Wabasha Winona, MN

2 Glorious Glass Stained Glass Tour Saturday April 16, 2016 As you may know, Winona is the Stained Glass Capital of North America, and Central enjoys being a part of that heritage. On Saturday April 16, am-5pm the Winona County Historical Society hosts Glorious Glass, a ticketed, self-guided tour of Winona s finest stained glass. Central Lutheran is one of the stops on this tour. CLC seeks volunteers for hospitality. If you are available to help us extend a CLC welcome to the potentially 500 guests (this is a big event!). Contact Bev Spande at Beverly30@charter.net or call Sunday School Dates to Remember: April 3rd - NO SUNDAY SCHOOL - EASTER BREAK April 10th - Sunday school CLASSES RESUME April 17th - SS children sing at 10:30 service May 15th - Last day of Sunday school TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY SS children sing at 10:30 service Exploring the Gospel Sunday mornings at 9:20 a.m. in Grace Hall All are welcome to join us as we explore the Gospel reading each weekend. I love the quiet ministries. Every so often I see people doing their quiet ministries. There s someone who brings in a bag of groceries every week for the food shelf, she doesn t know I see her sometimes. The college student who comes in and sets tables every week for the Feast, no fanfare, just doing what she can to help. A person who goes every Thursday without fail to help a young mother with her toddlers. Another couple who babysit at night so this same young couple can go out or spend time with the older sibling. People checking in on their neighbors. So many times I see people living out their faith, being the hands and feet of Christ. They don t need to be recognized or even thanked, but doing unto others. Notice I did not say little ministries, because these ministries are huge! Here s the challenge, find a way you can help once in a while. Do it once or on a regular basis, I guarantee you will feel God s good grace shining down on you! Peace, Connie Welcoming All Growing Faith 2 Engaging Worship Compassionate Service

6 Call Committee Report March 15, 2016 MEMBERS Chris Dahlke Mia Martin Marylou Hurley Tammy Swenson-Lepper Susan Zeller Linda Garrison (alternate) Jay Duresky Pastor Michelle Rem Steve Everson Chairman OUR YOUTH REPRESENTATIVES Hannah Lepper Cody Duresky ***************************************** ************************* Over a year ago we began the formation of a Call Committee for an Associate Pastor. The emphasis for the pastor would be on Youth and Family Faith Formation. The need for this position was the result of a Youth Visioning Taskforce s study and findings from congregational surveys done over the last few years, plus the need for assistance with pastoral duties with Pastor Rem. A considerable effort was made to have a wide demographic representation of congregational members on this committee. Everyone on this committee worked hard. When something needed to be accomplished, they always volunteered to get it done. We met with the synod representative, Pete Reuss, who gave us guidance, call committee guidelines and what to expect. We then spent a good deal of time preparing the Ministry Site Profile. This document is given to prospective candidates. It describes our congregation, the church, community and what our leadership needs are. During the second half of last year, we were ready for candidates. We did not receive any names from the synod. They told us there were many congregations in our synod that had openings for a Youth & Family Pastor. We did, however, receive three names of candidates that were brought forward from the congregation. Two of them declined to be interviewed. A third was interested and was interviewed twice. Toward the end of last year, as we were considering this candidate for call, Pastor Rem resigned. At this point we were advised by the synod and others familiar with the call process that it would be far better to call a Directing Pastor first. That way the Directing Pastor would be involved with the call process for an Associate Pastor to make sure it would be a good fit. So after some initial confusion about what do we do now?, our work has now ceased. We have been in discussion with the church council and Pastor Li on the best way to move forward. There needs to be a time of reflection and self-study. What are our ministry needs and priorities? Staffing also needs to be looked at. After the self-study, a new Call Committee will be formed and re-commissioned. The new Call Committee will be elected by the Church Council for the purpose of calling a Directing Pastor. Present Call Committee members are welcome to be a part of that group. If their circumstances are different at that time or if they don t feel compelled to be part of the Directing Pastor Call Committee, they should not feel obligated to be a part of it. The present Call Committee was acknowledged and thanked before the congregation on Sunday, March 6 th Memorials UNDESIGNATED In memory of Dick Keiper Given by Glen Buege QUILTERS In memory of Helen and Chris Congreve Given by Margaret B. Looks like we will be another contender this year. It s a busy time here at CLC getting reading for Easter and preparing for being away on respite care after that. Niemi the classrooms to purchase new equipment. We are very thankful to you all for supporting us! Budgets Payroll for the Church and Child Care Center is paid out biweekly, meaning every other week. With this type of payroll, there are usually 2 months per year where staff are paid 3 times a month. The 3 month payroll are the months that the Center shows a deficit. January showed just that, a deficit due to 3 payrolls, however, it took only one month to be able to balance the budget rather than 3-4 months. We are very pleased that we were under budget in expenses for the month by $3000. Enrollment: The following is a breakdown of enrollment including full time and part time. Infant Classroom 16, Toddler Classroom 22, Preschool Classroom 19, Preschool 2 Classroom 21, Total Enrolled 78. Throughout the year we have children transitioning to new classrooms. All child transitions to the next classroom at developmentally appropriate times are scheduled and new enrollment is ready when we have vacancies. Our earliest availability is fall 2017 for all classrooms. We have limited vacancies throughout the next year but need to accept only the ages that work within our framework. Staffing: We have 35 staff and are conducting new employee orientation to 3 new employees for on-call shifts and substitute staff. Sunday School, a Milestone Program continuing the faith journey from the baptismal font. Thanks to all who have contributed to making Sunday School an important ministry this year. A special thank you to Vickie Evenson for her work as Sunday School Superintendent, Tammy Lepper for leading children s worship, and to the teachers and helpers who have led weekly lessons. The children will be singing on April 17 th and on May 15 th. Judy Davis taught the third grade Milestone bible class and the third graders were presented their Bibles the last Sunday in February. The program continues with the help of parents and congregational members and once again we are in need of lining up teachers for the fall. We are encouraging all families to be a part of the Easter Vigil and to celebrate Easter Sunday during our worship services. Welcoming All Engaging Worship Growing Faith Compassionate Service 8
