1 THE BRIDGE PAGE 1 VOL. 9 NO. 38 SEPTEMBER 28, 2016 I love this season of the year. I enjoy the mild temperatures; and I enjoy the excitement of football games. We have a special Sunday planned right in the thick of autumn and football season Sunday, November 6. We are calling it FAN Day. FAN Day stands for Friend and Neighbor Day. With the focus this year being on loving our neighbors as ourselves, this day will be an opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to join us for worship and Bible study. Everyone is invited to wear the jersey, shirt, sweater, etc. of your favorite sports team. (You Slippery Rock fans this is your chance!) Some things are being planned that will make it a great opportunity for inviting those we know that do not have a family of faith. That s FAN Day Sunday, November 6. We have seen God s blessing on the ministry of ABC in such sweet and special ways over these recent weeks. To be able to see two adults baptized last Wednesday night, September 21, to have over 20 people added to our membership the last three Sundays (a number of them as candidates for believers baptism), to see our new Bible Fellowship Groups all get off to such strong starts and our existing groups have such a solid beginning to the new Bible Fellowship year, to move into one new building and see the other coming along at a steady pace, to have many irst-time guests attend the last several Sundays, and to see so many other signi icant things going on the evidence of God s hand on the ABC faith family is abounding! We don t take for granted the fact that God has chosen to do extraordinary things through the men, women, boys and girls that are involved in our church. Instead, we give Him glory and honor and praise! (Continued on page 2) WHAT S INSIDE Baptisms... 2 Welcome New Members Membership From the Desk of D. Jeb and Kayla Russell, and their precious girls Elizabeth and Ada are moving to the Detroit, Michigan, area. Jeb and Kayla found our church as newlyweds fresh out of The University of Texas. As time passed by, their service to our church proved of immeasurable value. Both volunteered in student ministry. Jeb served as our Interim Minister to Students. Kayla began working in various roles with children s ministry. Eventually, she came on staff as an Assistant Children s Minister. Even after her duties as a mom led her to step out of that role, she continued to serve in both children s and student ministry. This dear, sweet family will be sorely missed; but I know that they will be a great blessing to the body of believers with whom they unite in Michigan. Gary Dyer, Pastor John 3:30 Following in Believers Bap sm TAYLOR LATZKO CAROL BELL JADYN GOODLAND On Wednesday, September 21, Pastor Gary Dyer had the blessing of baptizing Taylor Latzko and Carol Bell. You can read their biographies in this week s new member article on page 3. Jadyn Goodland was baptized on Sunday, September 25. He is the son of Jennifer Goodland. Jadyn made his profession of faith during the traditional worship of September 4. The eight-year-old is a third grader at Williams Elementary School. Proud grandparents are ABC members Gerald and Phyllis McPhail.

She moved back to Austin in 1986 and met her husband, David Bell. They were introduced by Carol s niece at a meeting of the Toastmasters Club. They married in 1987 and eventually built their dream home in Windmill Bluff Estates near Mans ield Dam. David died of cancer three years ago. They worked together as independent dealers of AMSOIL, a synthetic oil for automobiles. Carol loves music and plans to join our choir. She is visiting our Bible Fellowship groups. Taylor Latzko also joined by believer s baptism on September 21. He met recently with Dr. Dyer and made his profession of faith. Taylor is from Austin. He is 26 and lives with his family in Westminster Glen. He works for a ride-sharing company called FARE. Eddie and Debbie Cox joined in the traditional service; they transfer their membership from Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. They married in 1973 following their graduation from the University of Mary Hardin- Baylor in Belton. Eddie earned a degree in psychology, then attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth where he earned his master s degree in religious education. He served on the staff of four Baptist churches before beginning a career of 32 years with the International Mission Board of our Southern Baptist Convention. For ten years Eddie was the regional leader for Western Europe; his inal 12 years with the IMB was in Richmond, Virginia, as Director of the Of ice of Global Prayer. For several years he also worked part-time with the YMCA of Greater Richmond in their water sports program. Eddie and Debbie have two children and three grandchildren; their son and two of their grandchildren live here in Austin, which led them to move here in April. They live near the Onion Creek neighborhood in southeast Austin. Jeff and Zantea ( Z ) Carpenter and their daughter Madelyn joined in the 11:11 service and transfer their membership from First Baptist Church, Lafayette, Louisiana. Jeff is from Deridder, Louisiana, and earned his undergraduate degree in English language and literature from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Jeff moved here in March to begin his new job with Job2Careers, a job search engine with of ices near our church. For several years he worked in the oil and gas industry, and for 14 years he was a sportswriter for local (Continued on page 4)

Rabi Samuel and Rani Remus joined by believer s baptism on September 11; children Anjali Samuel and Joshua Samuel joined by statement of faith. David Procter Considering Membership? Membership 101 is for those interested in inding out more about ABC and who are considering membership. If you ve been worshipping with us and would like to learn more about our church, we invite you to attend. The ABC family wants to encourage and disciple those who God brings to our church and help them feel welcome and truly a part of the family. Participation does not commit you to membership. No need for reservations! Just plan to attend! The next class meets on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at 10:10 a.m. in the Choir Room. Pastor Gary Dyer invites all interested persons to attend!

5 THE BRIDGE PAGE 5 Reaching Out to Our Guests Why should your group follow-up on guests who visit a worship service, event, or your Bible Fellowship group? A simple answer: Because we should care about their eternal destiny and their personal spiritual growth!! If a guest attends a worship service or your Bible Fellowship group and completes a guest registration card, then it is very likely that they would welcome some kind of follow-up. Otherwise, they would not have completed the card! Follow-up options include: Text message Phone Personal note Praying for them Taking them to lunch following Bible Fellowship or worship Offering to meet them the following week for coffee or a meal The only unacceptable approach is to ignore them, not even acknowledge that they were there. Let s make every effort to offer grace, love, and community to every guest who visits our church. David Procter

6 PAGE 6 THE BRIDGE Now is the Season! It s so wonderful to experience the changing of the seasons. I enjoy cool breezes and changing foliage, such as they are in the Austin area. Is there anything more relaxing than throwing on a sweatshirt and jeans and tossing a football around? Exhilarating! The Bible has much to say about seasons. To everything there is a season. Ecclesiastes. 3:1 He made the moon to mark the seasons Psalm 104:19 Most importantly, this passage on spreading the Gospel seed in every season: Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. II Timothy 4:2 (ESV) The ields are white unto harvest. We must remain busy broadcasting the seed of God s Kingdom by every means possible. Now is the season! What s Up Next On Wednesday nights, we have a new Bible study for college students and young adults called CHRIST LIFE: Ancient Bible Principles in a 21st Century World. Our next topic of study begins on October 26 and is Practical Ideas for Family Worship. Read more about the next segment on page 7. The group meets in Room 242 in the new East Building. Check it out! Blessings, John Parker Calling All Men! Our last Men s Choir was such a huge Room success, 108 we re doing it again! Men of all ages, make plans now to come rehearse on Wednesday, November 9, and lead in worship in the 9:00 a.m. service on November 13. 7 THE BRIDGE PAGE 7 Last Sunday, the Maranatha Bible Fellowship Group began this study with a look at When God Feels Far from You and Call Psalm 139. This series follows as detailed below: October 2 When You are Worried Call Ma hew 6:25 34 October 9 When You are Suffering Call Romans 8:18, 5:3 5; 1 Peter 5:10, & James 1:2 4 October 16 When You are in Need Call Philippians 4:19 October 23 When You are Losing Hope Call 2 Thessalonians 2:16 17 October 30 Overcoming Fear Call Psalm 27:1 6 November 6 When You are Hated Because of Your Faith Call John 15:17 27 Members & Guests: In our day and age, people are fascinated with formulas for success in business and personal life. Come join us Sunday as we will uncover such a formula from the book of 1 Samuel. Zack

8 PAGE 8 THE BRIDGE The KidzMuzik classes are memorizing hymns and praise songs again this year. I hope that you will consider studying them along with us. The first of several HeartSongs we will learn is Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart. I am always fascinated by the history of how songs came to be. I won t bore you with all of the music nerd details. Well maybe just a few interesting items: The words to this hymn were written for a choral festival in England in I found three tunes which have been used with these lyrics. The earliest of three was not written until This causes great curiosity about the music which was performed at the festival. What melody did they use? Was there a fourth tune that was so bad no one remembers it? Or did they just get the date wrong in the music history books? The newest hymn tune, written in 1883, is the one that we use today. I like it best because it has a refrain at the end of each verse: Rejoice, rejoice! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing! It is a great finish to each verse and signals all those singers who may be lost in the notes that it is time to take a deep breath and plow into the next verse! The older I get, the more I appreciate items that stand the test of time. This dusty old thing proudly takes its place in the THANKFULNESS section of the 21st century hymnals, alongside 70s praise songs, such as Give Thanks; a new hymn by Keith Getty, My Heart is Filled With Thankfulness; and Thank You, Lord from the 1940s. Old or new, all of these songs are drawn from the same scriptures, which never change! There are four verses to Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart in our hymnal. The original lyrics had eleven verses! I was delighted to find this doxology in the last verse: Praise Him who reigns on high, The Lord whom we adore, The Father, Son and Holy Ghost, One God forevermore. This is my favorite YouTube post of this hymn. It has great pipe organ and orchestra accompaniment: Dodie Meet Our Missionaries On Sunday, Oct. 2 Tanner & Kendra Clarke Meet our missionaries, Tanner and Kendra Clarke, on Sunday, October 2, at Austin Baptist Church. Tanner is a charter member of ABC and the son of members Jim and Lynn Clarke. Tanner and Kendra met at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX. Kendra received a degree in business administration and Tanner, a degree in mass communications. After marrying in 2013, they moved to San Francisco, CA, to attend Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (later renamed Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention). They partnered with a North American Mission Board missionary doing evangelism and discipleship on the San Francisco City College campus. They graduated in May 2016 with degrees in masters of missiology and are now part of the International Mission Board, and headed to Dusseldorf, Germany, to do church planting. ABC is one of the Clarke s ive Send Churches. While the IMB fully supports them inancially, a Send Church will lift them up in prayer and encouragement. Their current prayer request is that they would be able to have good goodbyes with family and friends before leaving for Germany and to focus on God through their transition to the ield. Meet them following traditional worship in the new Adult Bible Fellowship area; or after the 11:11 service in the Great Hall outside the Sanctuary. Take one of their prayer cards and sign up to receive ministry updates and future prayer requests.

9 THE BRIDGE PAGE 9 I m a big fan of demotivational posters. If you ve never heard of them, they take the art and style of the cliche motivational posters you see in dentist offices, schools, etc. and make them into very funny and sarcastic images. For instance, one of my favorites has a close-up picture of grass with the subtitle Ambition: The tallest blade of grass is always the first to get cut. Or the one titled Procrastination: Hard work often pays off later, but laziness always pays off now. They always give me a good laugh. One of these demotivators runs: There is no I in team but there is a me! As we look at our role in a community, we are often challenged to figure out if our primary responsibility in the group should be to ourselves or to everyone else. It is a constant tension of teamwork. This week in Axis, we will look at Galatians 6:1-10 and discover that in God s community of the Church the answer is both! Paul is clear in this passage that we are to Carry each other s burdens, (vs 2) but also, each one should carry their own load. (vs 5) How can this be? How does it work that we have to both carry our own burden and each other s in order to live in community in a Christ-like way? To put it simply, while we are responsible for taking on one another s burdens (through prayer, encouragement, and challenge), we are also responsible for making the effort to shoulder our own burdens as well. We need to be ready to allow others to help us in the community of faith, but our attitude needs to be prepared to take on our responsibilities. Paul is trying to convince the Galatians to avoid two things: ignoring other people s difficulties and shifting off one s own responsibilities to someone else. As believers, we have to be readily willing to share the loads of each other s lives while at the same time taking efforts to shoulder our on burdens. In our community of faith, do you struggle with either of these challenges? How often do you reach out to pray and encourage those around you at church? Or do you We need to be ready to allow others to help us in the community of faith, but our attitude needs to be prepared to take on our responsibilities. regularly throw many of your problems on someone else to pray for while not making any attempts to grow in dealing with your problems? May we be a church family that binds together to support one another while at the same time doing our best to carry our own loads. May we be a both/and kind of church! By Christ s Love, Matt

10 PAGE 10 THE BRIDGE SIGN UP ONLINE NOW districts/leander-isd-2/ Matthew West has a great song that is called Do Something. He talks about all the problems in the world and then shakes his ist at God and says God, why don t You do something? He answers, I did; I created you. That kind of lies back in his face, doesn t it? It really moves my heart everything I hear it. I am in my 60s now and have my share of medical issues, aches and pains, family issues...life stuff. So maybe I can t go to Africa and build a church but I can sponsor a child through Compassion International. Maybe I have not been gifted to sing in the choir but I can do my part so that those with that talent can be free to sing. Yes, many things in our world are in turmoil, but God is still able! What I can do, I will do because that s the blessing God gives me by showing me things that I CAN do. I can still be used by God and that excites me! Many children drop out of school because they have never it in, they never felt that they could do anything right, they missed so much because they never learned to read. I CAN READ! I can spend 30 minutes each week, reading to two children in order to make their road easier. I will read to students in K-3 rd grades to make sure they have a best chance to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade which gives them a irm foundation. I can also help their self-esteem by showing them that someone cares and inds them worth the time. I can give LOVE because I have surely been showered with that from my Heavenly Father. We are recruiting now for Literacy Partners for the Leander School District. ABC has adopted Grandview Hills Elementary School and this will be our third year matching volunteers to children in K-3 rd grades. This is a 30 minutes per week commitment for the entire school year. After a few short weeks, the children bond with the volunteer and we need to provide continuity as much as possible. We want to show All literacy partners must a end one of the following training sessions: Wed.
