1 THE BRIDGE PAGE 1 VOL. 10 NO. 3 JANUARY 18, 2017 This Sunday, January 22, we will be marking Sanctity of Life Sunday by focusing on the subject, The Value of Human Life. This message is a part of the series, Unapologetic. I am going to lead us in an in-depth concentration on why every human life matters to God and should to us. I am then going to give some practical things we can do to evidence our commitment to stand for life and help build a culture of life. I think this could be a pivotal year in this regard. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Congress would remove all federal funding for Planned Parenthood. It won t be a battle without opposition, though. Pray that those in government who are strongly pro-life won t budge on their promise to defund that organization that has been caught engaging in some of the most hideous practices imaginable. We are now just over a month out from the [UN]Apologetic conference (February 24-25). If you haven t registered, I want to encourage you to do so soon. Even more so, I want to encourage you to invite someone to be your guest who is a skeptic or a seeker or just not sure what to believe. This is a weekend that will provide them with exceptional clarity on the issues of (Continued on page 2) WHAT S INSIDE Contact Information... 2 Golden Marriage Celebration... 2 Welcome New Members... 3 Lamplighters... 3 Call to Prayer... 3 Mosaic BFG New Study... 3 [UN]Apologetic Conference... 4 From the Heart of John Parker... 5 Music Notes from Dodie th Anniversary Cookbook... 7 The Chorale from DBU... 8 Hill Toppers Potluck... 8 Women s Bible Study... 9 Mom2Mom... 9 Alaska Trip Membership Student Life Camp Student Ministry Events Tutoring Opportunity Who ll Teach the Children? 5 THE BRIDGE PAGE 5 As Dr. Dyer so wonderfully proclaimed last Sunday in his sermon from Psalm 19, we do indeed live in a massive universe, beautifully created, meticulously organized and gloriously maintained by our God. The heavens declare the glory of God! Amen and amen! MUSIC IN WORSHIP Sunday, January 22, :00 am How Great Thou Art My Lord is Near Me All the Time He Knows My Name You Knew Me Lord Speak to My Heart 11:11 am Alive Jesus, Son of God Jesus, Only Jesus Forever Reign I am humbled even more when I remember that God s care for His creation reaches from the ends of the universe (billions of light years away) all the way down to tiny and seemingly insigni icant you and me. Doesn t that blow your mind? My little brain can t even begin to understand why a God so great, mighty and powerful would care for one like me. And yet, He does. How do I know He cares for me? The Bible declares it over and over. God speaks it to me daily, and I can clearly hear it when I really pay attention to His Spirit. Here are but six simple reminders of how much God cares for you and me. Take in these phrases and passages and let them minister to you today as we daily serve our gracious God with joy and gratitude. HE MADE ME For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:13-14 (ESV) HE PROVIDES FOR MY NEEDS Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26 (ESV) HE GAVE HIS SON FOR MY SIN What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? Romans 8:31-32 (ESV) HE GIVES ME HOPE AND A FUTURE For I know the plans I have for you, declares the L, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV) HE WELCOMES ME INTO HIS PRESENCE Let us then with con idence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and ind grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 (ESV) HE S PREPARING A HOME FOR ME And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. John 14:3 (ESV) Blessings, John Parker
6 PAGE 6 THE BRIDGE Kathy Morales daughter, Emily (le ), celebra ng with new believer, Shinelle, following her bap sm at Connect Church in Calgary, Alberta, Canada If we don t know how or what to pray, it doesn t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. ROMANS 8:26 THE MESSAGE The youngest member of The Family Upstairs is just past two and a half years old. She, like our other granddaughters, is quite verbal, babbling away in complete sentences that we cannot always understand. As her speech has developed, it seems that her vowels do not always sound like the word she is trying to say. For example, she has been taught to ask for help when she gets frustrated. However, when she says, I need help, it sounds like I need hope. Everyone in the house knows what she means, and one of us goes immediately to help her solve whatever problem she has. Sometimes I wonder if my prayers are like the messy language of a two-yearold, struggling to ind the right words. Aren t you glad that God knows and provides what we need, but still enjoys our childish attempts at conversation? Children sharpen their language skills by practice. We can get better or clearer at prayer the same way practice! If you have been praying for the people of Calgary there is some good news to share: Our friend, Kathy Morales, has been ministering to the University of Calgary girls basketball team over the last two or three years. Our student mission team has assisted her both last summer and the year before in providing a meal, some music, fellowship, and a short devotional for the team after one of their practices. Kathy has also been witnessing one-on-one to a couple of the girls. A few weeks ago, one of the girls accepted Christ! She was baptized this past Sunday at Connect Church (the church plant that ABC is supporting.) They used a hot tub! Several of her teammates (all unbelievers) came to watch her baptism and hear the Word preached by Dan Sweaza. So please keep praying! All the girls and their coaches need to know Jesus. Dodie

12 PAGE 12 THE BRIDGE Ms. Kathy Goeoke, elementary school principal at Grandview Hills Elementary reports: We are in the process of establishing an after-school tutoring program for our students who are struggling in the area of writing. Our writing performance has decreased over the past several years, and we would like to begin providing support for our students in that area. The tutoring will be an extension of the classroom instruction. We want to give each tutored student a boost that will impact his/her classroom experience. We would like to begin Tuesday, January 31, and provide Tuesday/Thursday tutoring through April 27 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. need any speci ic skills to tutor, other than a love of children and the ablity to encourage students to become better writers. istation will do the rest. Interested persons should contact Andrea Wardrop at andrea.wardop@leanderisd.org. Kind, caring adults are needed to assist students with a computerized writing support. This program, istation, will be the curriculum for tutoring. An orientation will be provided so you will have the background needed to assist students as they work their way through the program. Volunteers do not Six beautiful new preschool rooms are now complete and ready for an enlarged ministry to preschoolers and their families. Along with the rooms and furnishings, we need men and women, members of our church, committed to loving and teaching boys and girls the Word of God. It is one of our greatest opportunities, and represents an investment in eternity. It is essential that Austin Baptist Church provide devoted children s leaders, equipped to teach the Bible in ways that are compelling and appropriate to each age. Are you someone that God is calling to teach the Bible to preschoolers? Are you willing to learn? We can help. Contact Cathy Smith, our wonderful Minister to Children and Their Families. She and her Associate Kati Dobbs are an incredible team, and we are growing. We need your help today! David Procter
