1 THE BRIDGE Page 1 VOL. 9 NO. 23 JUNE 15, 2016 It was a special treat last Saturday for Teena and me to join with numerous others, including dozens from ABC, in honoring Tim McCoy for his brave and heroic military service in the United States Navy during World War II. Tim has not been able to par cipate in the Honor Flight program that takes WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to tour the memorials there, so Honor Flight Aus n brought the program to him. Many of you know Tim s story, but for those who don t: Tim, who served in the submarine force, is a decorated veteran and a former prisoner of war. In April 1943, McCoy was aboard the USS Grenadier when the submarine was a acked and damaged by an enemy plane. The crew was able to make emergency repairs and raise the submarine to the surface, but it was detected by a Japanese ship. He and the crew on board were captured. He was held in a POW camp un l libera on at the end of the war. Tim McCoy See more about Tim and the Honor Flight program on page 4 Tim served in the Navy for more than 24 years and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart, along with other military awards. 3 THE BRIDGE Page 3 Four new members joined in the Pastor s Membership 101 Class on Sunday, June 12. Emily Boyd and her fiancé Adam Hamme joined, Emily by transfer of le er from Second Bap st Church in Houston and Adam for believer s bap sm. Both of them began worshiping with us in January. Emily is from Houston and earned two degrees from The University of Texas in journalism and English literature. She works in the marke ng department of Aus n-based jewelry company Kendra Sco. Adam is from Piedmont, Alabama. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in marke ng. He is a campaign opera ons specialist for Oracle. Emily and Adam met in Aus n at South by Southwest; mutual friends introduced them. Emily s mother heard about our church and encouraged them to worship at Aus n Bap st Church. Emily lives in south Aus n and Adam in Northwest Hills. Emily and Adam a end 18:29 Bible Fellowship group. They plan to be married on March 4, Joanna Gatlin transfers her membership from First Bap st Church, San Angelo, her hometown. She earned her degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University and is a test engineer for Na onal Instruments. Joanna moved to Aus n just over a year ago and found us online. She is ac ve in 18:29 Bible Fellowship group. She lives in north Aus n. Alice Ruth Worley transfers her membership from First Bap st Church of San Marcos. She was born and raised in Kyle, Texas. She married her high school sweetheart Wilburn in 1945 when he returned from serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II. She moved to Aus n in May and lives in Canyon Creek with her daughter, ABC member Kathy Dixon. She also has a son, Dennis, who serves as worship leader at Brentwood Bap st Church in Brentwood, Tennessee. She has five grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. She has been a member of the senior adult choir at First Bap st. She a ends Faith Builders Bible Fellowship group with her sister, ABC member Faye Jarvis. David Procter

4 Page 4 THE BRIDGE Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organiza on created solely to honor America s veterans for all their sacrifices. The network transports our heroes to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans World War II survivors like ABC member Tim McCoy. Since Tim was unable to make the flight, the honor was given on Saturday, June 11, at Westminster where Tim and his wife Jean live. They have been married 69 years! A large crowd assembled, local media were present, and we watched a wonderful video of the Honor Flight experience. It was a privilege for all of us to honor Tim and Jean and thank them for what they mean to their family, their friends, their community, and their church. David Procter

5 THE BRIDGE Page 5 Prepara on is essen al for group me to be effec ve and life-changing. Here are three steps in reverse order of importance. Invest well the 167 hours between group mee ngs. Con nue learning beyond group me. Lead them to apply the truth from group me. Help them prepare well for the next gathering. Prior to the group mee ng, rest well so you can give God and His people your best effort. Avoid being red. Pray. Look over the Scripture and your notes. Gather any supplies needed. Arrive early to the mee ng space. Prepare the space as needed. Prayerwalk the space. Pray for the group and for God to use the me. Greet people as they arrive. Give them your full a en on. Prepare as if Jesus will be there. Where two or three are gathered, He will be (Ma hew 18:20)! Start early. Invest daily in prepara on. Keep in mind that your example ma ers. Spend me daily in a quiet me of prayer and Bible study. Read the Scripture several mes. Consider how the truth of the passage applies to life today and to individuals in your group. Consider the best methods for leading the group to encounter God in Bible study. What are the best methods to lead them to examine context, Scripture, and applica on? How can you create interest in the passage, topic, or truth for the day? How can you get their minds in the room and on God? The first encounter is the me the teacher has set aside to meet God in Bible study. It is the teacher s experience with God resul ng in personal change. The encounter is more important than the lesson. For the teacher, me with God is the lesson. The first encounter is the me God uses to prepare a teacher to guide others through the landscape of His Word and the truth contained therein that learners need to hear and obey. The four steps to an encountering rela onship with God include (1) Bible study listening to Him; (2) Prayer responding/talking to Him; (3) Commitment agreeing with/commi ng to follow Him; and (4) Obedience walking with Him. When the concert is over, we have all kinds of goodies and games for the whole family. The event is FREE to the public. Emily will pursue a double major in English and music. Taylor Gaskins just completed her freshman year at University of North Texas in Denton.
