ALL the time the Lord is good. Thank you to everyone who has been praying for our co-worker, Joyce Johnson. I had news today that she will soon be returning to us here at HACC on a limited schedule, which is certainly a Praise the Lord. Also I want to offer a huge THANK YOU to ALL you Gardeners. The PAL lunch and the Shelter as well as our people who come to PAL have been enjoying the fresh vegetables and salads, and even some fruits of the season. Thank you, we all appreciate this so much. I am including in this article some information that might need clarified in the community. You may have heard that we do not offer a blessing before the meal at PAL. I feel a need to clarify exactly what has occurred. We have received from the USDA a directive based on an Executive Order that states that religious based Soup Kitchens, shelters or food distribution point may NOT offer any religious activity including prayer at the time of service. In order to offer thanks before a meal it must be offered in a different place or time. We have chosen to comply with this directive by offering a blessing 15 minutes before we serve our meal. Everyone who attends PAL has been advised that we do this and if they choose not to participate they may enter the dining room at 11:20 and wait for serving to begin at 11:30AM. It is a sign of the times but we are able to follow the directive and still be a witness to our Lord. I will just add that those who come to PAL were very upset that this has happened and felt that it was a government From the desk of Nancy Werner (Council President) Continued on page 2 It s budget time for the Hanover Area Council of Churches. The 2017 budget will be proposed at the Board of Directors meeting on August 29. The process of forming a budget is straightforward, however not a short one. Many people have played a role in creating the budget: the treasurer (Roger Anderson), Finance Committee, the various ministry committees and their respective chairpersons, the executive committee, Carol Hinkle (executive director), and the administrative assistant (Pam). Then with the approval of the Board of Directors in November, it will become our budget. Many prayers have been uttered over this budget during the process of creating it. More prayers will continue to be offered. Because that is what Continued on page 2 1

2 Continued from page 1, Carol Hinkle overreach. Let us all continue to pray for our nation and those who govern at all levels. This is the time of year that we look to prepare and pass our 2017 Financial Budget. We have always used a faith based budget and to my knowledge we have not finished in the red. We have noticed that we are far behind 2015 in giving to date about $45, We finished the last few years with a good cushion but we are at this point dipping into that cushion. Again I ask you to prayer for the Council and those we serve that we be able to serve our community at the same level as we have. Our building is aging and there are repairs and replacements that have to be done. Appliances wear out with the built in obsolescence and need to be replaced. We have depended on a Building Committee that has donated time and talents for much of the maintenance of our facilities, but circumstances have changed and we are not always able to depend on them nor have we been able to put together a list of individuals who would be willing to be on a call list for emergency repairs. We are so grateful for all our donors and our workers. You serve the Lord so very well here in Hanover and we offer thanks for your generosity of time, talents, and resources. It has been a difficult six months and it reinforces in my spirit how the Lord is good all the time. 1 Thessalonians 5:25 Brethren, pray for us. Continued from page 1, Nancy Werner faithful stewards do. The goal of our budget is to be faithful stewards of the resources given to meet the needs of our neighbors in the greater Hanover area. As Christians, individually and as the organization of HACC, we depend on the Lord s wisdom and guidance as the managers (not the owners) of all that we have been given. HACC exists because of faithful and generous donors. Some individuals and organizations have been donating for many years, while others are recent supporters of the ministries of HACC. Whatever your history of donating to HACC, I want you to know that your generosity is deeply appreciated. Every donation is valued as a blessing from the Lord and serious thought, discussion, oversight and prayer is given to its use in helping others. HACC is a financially stable, sustainable organization because of you! 4 SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY In a continuing feature for our newsletter we will highlight a ministry from a volunteers experience. It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do! Ruth s Harvest in Full Swing for Fall We hope everyone has had a safe and relaxing summer. It is hard to believe, but by the time this article goes to print schools will have been back in session and we will be getting things started to send out our first backpacks of the year. This is our fourth year already, and we continue to serve the four elementary schools in the Hanover district. Our coordinators were unable to hand out the forms to the parents at the schools open houses, so we are asking all of you to help us get this information to all of those in need. The forms can be picked up at the schools, Hanover Area Council of Churches, and New Hope Ministries. We have been working throughout the summer to get the program ready and up-to-date for the new school year. The first backpacks are scheduled to be delivered to the registered children on September 9. We will begin our regular Monday morning collection from participating churches and civic groups on Monday, September 12. The food items, of course, are the same. Individual servings of cereal, fruit, vegetables, mini meals, complete meals, drinks, and snacks. Because allergy to peanuts continue to be of concern, we have a particular need for peanut free snacks. You may also make monetary donations with checks made out to Hanover Area Council Of Churches with RUTH S HARVEST on the notation line or simply to Ruth s Harvest. As always we ask for your continued prayers, and your continued support to make this yet another successful year serving God s Children in the Hanover area The Ruth s Harvest Back Pack Program is only possible through your donations and many volunteers who accept, sort, pack and deliver your donations to the children. Why Would a Loving God Allow Evil, Pain, and Suffering? Sunday, November 6 ~ 1 PM ~ St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 127 York St. Light refreshments will be served, this is a free presentation This presentation by Steven Hemler, President of the Catholic Apologetics Institute of North America (CAINA) and author of The Reality of God: The Layman's Guide to Scientific Evidence for the Creator, looks at how the greatest Christian thinkers of all times have dealt with the problem of evil and the mystery of suffering in a world made and pronounced "good" by God. In other words, why does God allow terrorism and other atrocities, as well as disease and natural disasters? This multimedia presentation includes several powerful and inspiring video testimonies. Understanding the meaning of suffering will help us and those we love become better, not bitter, when facing the inevitable hardships in life. 5

For more info contact Millie Fout at Founder s Club Banquet at Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community In 1983, a special dinner was held marking the 75 th anniversary of The Brethren Home where money was raised to purchase a grand piano for the Meetinghouse. Since then, a special group of supporters of the Church of the Brethren mission, now known as Cross Keys Village-The Brethren Home Community, have taken on an annual project that will benefit residents of the community. The 2016 project includes a clavinova for the Honey Brook neighborhood in the Health Care Center and sponsorship of a kitchen in the new Memory Care residence, which is currently under construction. Anyone who chooses to support the annual project at an Associate, Founder or Benefactor level is eligible to attend the annual celebration dinner on Saturday, November 5. Our special guest for the banquet is singer/songwriter Buddy Greene. Growing up in Macon, Ga., Buddy spent his childhood learning folk songs on the ukulele and soon advanced to acoustic guitar. He brings a wide variety of southern Americana influences to create a unique musical hybrid of country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and traditional blues. Additionally, Buddy has established himself as one of Nashville s finest harmonica stylists. In 1991, Buddy collaborated with Mark Lowry to write Mary, Did You Know?
