COUNCIL NEWS APRIL From the desk of Carol Hinkle (HACC Director) I am amazed that so many people do not know what we do through the Hanover Area Council of Churches. I was asked by Board members if I could make a list of the things we do to show what a vital part of our community we are. It seems when I sat down to write this I couldn t stop. We have such wonderful and loyal volunteers and staff it is such a privilege to work with all of you. So many people go above and beyond the job description that it makes it impossible to write everything. WHAT DO WE DO HERE AT THE COUNCIL OF CHURCHES? Tuesdays are free clothing to certified individuals at 200% of poverty level. They are also eligible for Specials Room items such as toiletries, diapers and baby food, bedding, blankets, school supplies, underwear, socks and many other items. Thursday is open to public, as is the 1 st Saturday of the month, there is a charge for items but very inexpensive. Our also gives clothing in emergency situations such as fire or unanticipated custody. Food Insecurity Provide-A- Lunch is open to ANYONE who wants to have lunch 11:30 12:30 every day of the year. These meals are prepared by teams from volunteer churches and independent individuals. We daily have food available for anyone who wants to take enough for themselves or family. This varies from fresh produce, bakery items, canned goods and snack foods. We have on occasion given emergency food to families ineligible for the Food Bank at New Hope. Many people come to PAL to socialize as well as stretch their food budgets. The majority of who are on fixed incomes and find the money runs out before the month ends. MOWS are prepared in our own kitchen and are given to individuals who are shut-in, recovering from surgery or other health issues. This is a Monday-Friday service by referral only and may be accessed through VNA, a doctor, hospital social services, or a minister. We also will serve individuals under 60 years of age. Our delivery area is basically Hanover Borough and extended to Grandview Rd., Eisenhower, and the Adams County line. Ruth s Harvest is a weekend meal program for Hanover School District Elementary students eligible for free or reduced lunches. We deliver 7 meals plus snacks per bag which is 17 items. Call to 1
2 Continued from page 1, Carol Hinkle (HACC Director) Changing Lives Shelter The shelter is our 24/7 facility which is safe and secure for all who come to us. We are drug and alcohol free and we do tests on entry and randomly during each individual s stay. On entry we provide toiletries, clothing, coats and whatever is necessary for their success. We are a working shelter and many have jobs before coming to us and others find them very quickly. We expect everyone to save money, do assigned house chores, attend required meetings and meet with our Case Manager. Required meetings include Financial Counseling, Addiction Mentoring, House Meetings, Case Management meetings and special Life Skills Groups. We will allow people in during emergency heat and cold spells as advised by Code Blue. Anyone not willing to abide by the rules and guidelines will be asked to find other arrangements. Bilingual Case Case management for our daytime people (both Spanish and non-spanish) has been extremely busy. We provide assistance with forms and navigating through paperwork, banking, directing people to other organizations and ministries that could be of help. Our Case Manager also translates for individuals, conducts citizenship classes, ESL and Spanish classes and also puts together Kid s Day and the Diversity Summit. Many times, she is able to assist people with housing, furniture and house hold goods. Health Care Ministry We have a nurse s clinic on the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesdays of the month with a Dr on call. We assist with prescription assistance. These are normally $4.00 medicines through Laslow s Pharmacy and are restricted to original and 1 refill prescription. Community Gardens are still something we do with a few churches and Clearview Terrace each year. We also are a sponsor Greater Hanover Health Care Committee. Public Services There are many things we do to help the working poor, people down on their luck, and those who have other problems such as substance abuse. Although we do not have a large discretionary fund, we are able to help with renewing ID s or licenses, work boots or shoes, bus tickets, gas cards, toiletries and personal hygiene items. Showers and help with resumes and clothing for interviews are among many items are available to those in need. For those with addiction problems we hold meetings in our building through 4 different groups. Smart Recovery Sundays and Wednesdays 7:30-9:30 PM; AA Sundays at 8AM; Narcotics Anonymous Saturdays 7PM; and newly formed Celebrate Recovery which meets at 7PM on Fridays. Holidays are very important to us all, so we try to go the extra mile. For Thanksgiving we will distribute boxes of food collected by each homeroom at Delone Catholic High School. These boxes go to individuals and families who are not eligible for other resource, as well as serving a Thanksgiving Dinner for PAL and MOWs. For Christmas we operate JJ s Toy Box in honor of a child who died of asthma. The family chose us to provide gifts for children that might not have a Christmas. We provide for children that are not included in other programs. We also provide gift bags for all who attend a sit down Christmas dinner. At Easter we also give goody bags to everyone. We provide a Sunday Worship here at the Council for anyone who wishes to come. This is lead by retired ministers and lay leaders. This listing does not include our Public Worship services or Faith at Work projects and there are probably things I am leaving out. Believe me there are a lot of things to remember. But what we must remember is that we are to show the love, grace, and mercy of our Resurrected Lord to people in need of seeing these gifts. Thank you, all volunteers and staff, for being the hands and feet of Christ and may you all have a blessed Easter. 2
3 From the desk of Rev. Nancy Werner The scriptures contain many difficult questions Jesus posed to the people he encountered. We, people who follow him, wrestle with those same questions as if Jesus were asking us. Within the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) Jesus asked, Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? In his answer to Jesus, the lawyer identified the good Samaritan as being a neighbor for the injured man. The good Samaritan didn t help everyone. That would have been too big of a task. Yet, he did help someone. He was a neighbor for someone to which Jesus responded, Go and do likewise. Every day there are people who are in need of help. Sometimes they don t know how they re going to make it through the day, much less make it through the next week or month. These wounded people are in our roads and all around the world. Through the ministries of HACC we join together and so doing multiply the number of neighbors for people in need! I wonder if there is more we can do as neighbors? The other day I came across a thought-provoking quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., On the one hand we are called to play the good Samaritan on life s roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life s highway. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. 1 Something to ponder and include in our prayers and conversations: What impact do our ministries make in our culture and society which is beyond the level of individuals and families? 1.Martin Luther King, Jr., A Time to Break Silence, speech delivered 04/04/1967 at Riverside Church, New York City April Weekly Prayers Week of April 1, Community Needs Committee Week of April 8, Executive Committee Week of April 15, Faith-at-Work Ministry Week of April 22, Finance Committee Week of April 29, Fund Development Committee April Meetings April 1, 7pm Board of Directors & Ministries Board at HACC April 4, 7pm Shelter Committee at HACC April 9, 7:30am Building Committee at HACC April 15, 5pm Finance Committee at St. Joseph 3
4 Public Worship & Stole SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY April 19, 2019 is Good Friday. The Hanover Area Council of Churches has sponsored a service based on the Seven Words of Christ from the Cross. This has been done for many years and is a beautiful Service. The words are done in 25 minute segments so you are able to come and leave at the time between segments without distracting those who are worshipping or participating. Each word has a homily from one of our ministers and special music by one of our choirs. I invite you attend this moving service as we remember the suffering of our Lord for each one of us. The offering on Good Friday goes to the Stolte Scholarship Fund for those who are going into ministry and related fields. Our scholarship this year will be $ There will be an offering envelop inside your bulletin. Hanover Area Council of Churches invites you to attend their St. Matthew Lutheran 30 W. Since 1925, Kids Day, has grown as an annual celebration throughout the world. This day recognizes children, pays homage to their importance in society, and endorses their wellbeing, but it is also an opportunity for organizations, businesses, churches or agencies to reach out to the community in many different ways. Its origins can be traced all the way back to Reverend Dr Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, who gave a service dedicated to childhood innocence in June His sermon was so popular that it gave rise to an annual tradition known as Rose Day, later rechristened Flower Day. Here at HACH-Hispanic American Center of Hanover-Hanover Area Council of Churches, we extend this special day to all children, family members of all ages, cultural groups, community resources and businesses, in an effort to bring together communities of diverse cultures, promoting and celebrating our multicultural nation through healthy eating, healthy activities, healthy aging, healthy families, and the arts and literacy. Blessings, Mirna Wildason CHURCH EVENTS If your church has an event that it would like to publicize to the larger community, please your article to adminhacc@comcast.net (no more than 1/4 pg. size unless preapproved by HACC). 6 Another Way To Help Hanover Area Council of Churches Many of us during our lifetime accumulate assets. Personal property such as vehicles or jewelry, real estate, checking and savings accounts, investments such as stocks and bonds, IRAs and retirement accounts are often the major assets we accumulate. As Christians we believe these assets are from God. What happens to these assets at our death? As Christians we can use our estate to demonstrate our desire to fulfill the commandment to love God and our neighbor. If you act to create a will or estate plan you can decide where these assets go. One very practical way each of us can do this is to include the Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC) in our will or estate plan so HACC will be a blessing to future generations. Drawing up an estate plan or will is a simple process. To make sure it is done correctly, any estate plan or will should be drawn up by a qualified attorney familiar with your financial circumstances, family situation and wishes for your assets. One simple vehicle is to leave a gift in your will. It can be as simple as: I give, devise, and bequest to Hanover Area Council of Churches in Hanover, PA the sum of dollars ($ ) or other specifically described asset for its general uses and purposes. Or it could be I give, devise, and bequest to Hanover Council of Churches in Hanover, PA an amount equal to percent ( %) of the value of my (gross or net) estate or some account e.g. IRA, investment, savings/checking, etc. account. There are numerous other estate planned giving vehicles that can benefit both the giver and HACC including charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. You can call the council office for more information on including HACC in your will or estate plan.
