COUNCIL NEWS June From the desk of Carol Hinkle (HACC Director) Here we are in another month of changing seasons. It is all around us change that is. We have wrapped up another successful year of Ruth s Harvest. The last Back Pack meals went out on May 20 th. School ended earlier this year. Thank you to the committee, coordinators, packers, sorters, delivery people and Food Bank Truck volunteers and everyone who donated time, food, funds to feed 275 children in the elementary school in the Hanover Borough. We have it on good authority that Ruth s Harvest makes a difference (definitely a praise the Lord ). We are happy to announce a successful beginning to the Healthy Hanover Community Gardens. There will be gardens for the benefit of New Hope Food Bank, HACC Provide-A- Lunch (PAL) and individuals and families (who have agreed to tithe to feeding programs.) The sites involved are St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran, All Saints Episcopal Church, 2 gardens at First United Methodist Church and Clearview Terrace Apartments. There is also a strong possibility for another site in downtown area. All are in various stages of planting and growth. We do believe Whoever brings blessings will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. Proverbs 11:25 this will be a very successful endeavor for the people of Hanover and be a good start on the road to a Healthy Community. We wish to offer a welcome to Pastor Russell Clark who was called to fill the pulpit at Emmanuel United Church of Christ on Broadway in Hanover and began his pastorate on May 15, 2016 and also we welcome Rev. Robin Keating as the Interim Pastor at Grace United Church of Christ and will start June 1, I would at this point like to tell you the Pamela Miley has been hired as our new Administrative Assistant. I have asked Pam to write a brief bio to introduce you to her, but let me add to this that Pam is a gem and I believe we have made a very good hire. 1 Continued on page 2
2 Continued from page 1, Carol Hinkle Pam Miley Bio I, Pam, am no stranger to wearing many hats while focusing on influencing the community in a positive manner. Having spent 25+ years in office management, and 20 years as a community volunteer I have been blessed to help better the lives of many. I raised 4 sons, and now enjoys spending time with my7 grandchildren. I have lead both small and large data management projects for a diverse range of organizations, including small business startups; large corporations; non-profits; as well as federal, state and local government agencies. These projects built on my strengths of problem solving, team building, and commitment to meeting deadlines. I first realized my passion for working with the public when I was asked to be a Board Member for Carroll County Christmas in April. After completing the first house project, I was hooked on volunteering. I continued helping in local outreach soup kitchens, homeless shelters, holiday programs, and church volunteer opportunities including mission trips. I credit Christ s actions in servitude as he walked among as my well of passion to help others. No job is too small or meaningless to show love for another. I have found from day one that the Lord has sent us the right person at the right time in all of our endeavors here at the Council. It is a blessing for which I am truly thankful. Please stop by and meet Pam. The Hispanic American Center of Hanover HACH, a ministry of HACC, was blessed with a wonderful Kid s Day Celebration at Wirt Park. The April 30 th event brought out an impressive 1,256 community members to enjoy the fun and games. The 315 families who came brought 298 kids (0-12) to play carnival games, get their faces painted, dance to music presentations, jump in inflatable bouncies, eat a variety of food and enter bike raffles. The Evening Sun shares a great video clip from the day showing some kids from So s Tae Kwon Do performing martial arts moves for the crowd. Please visit their website below to see the fun. If you thought of helping, but are not able to find the time to visit us at the Hanover Area Council of Churches, please remember our friends at Community Aid. You can drop items off in bins at various locations throughout York and Adam counties. The benefits from your giving will be shared with HACC to bless others in our Hanover Community. 4 SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY In a continuing feature for our newsletter we will highlight a ministry from a volunteers experience. It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do! Stolte Scholarship Each year the Stolte Scholarship, in the amount of $500.00, is awarded to an individual from the Greater Hanover Area pursuing a career in the ministry or other church-related vocation. Those interested are asked to complete an application and submit a brief summary of their call into ministry and future vocational goals. Application forms are made available through area pastors, high school guidance offices, and the Hanover Area Council of Churches office. The Stolte Scholarship Fund was established in 1974 in memory of the Reverend Robert H. Stolte, pastor of Lohr s Memorial United Methodist Church in Hanover from 1963 to Because of Rev. Stolte s dedication to youth ministry, the scholarship was administered to support college and seminary students studying for the ministry or other churchrelated vocations. The Fund also honors his wife, Jean K. Stolte, and his son, Drew C. Stolte, who was a Treatment Supervisor at the York County Prison. As part of this committee, it is always a blessing to see the devotion and call to serve the Lord shown by the applicants! We are truly impressed with the academic achievements, honors and awards, church and school involvements, and aspirations of those who apply. Past recipients have gone on to calls in Children and Youth Ministry, Music Ministry, Theatre Ministry, Missions, and Chaplaincy. This year the committee was pleased to select Jessica Lee as the recipient of the 2016 Stolte Scholarship. A graduate of Bloomsburg University, Jessica attends the Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg and is pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree. Currently, she is interning as a vicar at St. Matthew s Lutheran Church in Hanover. After completing her degree, Jessica is looking forward to serving in whatever way she is called be it to a parish ministry, ministry to the deaf community, or as a chaplain in a camp setting. It is truly inspiring to be a part of the selection process as the Stolte Scholarship committee choses its recipient each year. We are given the opportunity to read about some amazing young people and their journeys in following the Lord. If you would like to become a part of this committee or if you are studying for a career in the ministry or a church-related vocation and would like to apply for the scholarship, please contact the HACC office. 8th Annual VNA Hospice From the desk of Kathy Bortner, Chairman Wings of Hope Sunday, June 5, 3 p.m. (Rain or Shine) St. David s Evangelical Lutheran Church What Better way to Honor a Loved One or Friend than to release a butterfly? 1032 Musselman Road Hanover, PA in their name?
