2 Preparation for Worship Almighty God, we pray for you blessing on the church in this place. Here may the faithful find salvation, and the careless be awakened. Here may the doubting find faith, and the anxious be encouraged. Here may the tempted find help, and the sorrowful comfort. Here may the weary find rest, and the strong be renewed. Here may the aged find consolation and the young be inspired; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. May 17, 2015 WORSHIP FOR THE LORD S DAY 10:30 A.M. 7 th Sunday of Easter *Please rise in body or spirit. PRELUDE Pastorale for Flutes d Aquin WELCOME Greeting and Announcements Welcoming One Another Stephen Price-Gibson CHORAL INTROIT Christ is Arisen George F. Handel Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Happy are those who trust in the Lord; they are like trees, planted by the water. Happy are those who believe in Christ; they will have the gift of everlasting life. Let us worship God. JoAnn Lilly, Liturgist *HYMN We Praise You, O God No. 612 *CONFESSION AND PARDON Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Let us pray: In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God. God of all hope and joy, we confess that we continue to live in fear. You invite us to share in Christ s ministry, but we ignore the calling of our baptism. You allow us to share in Christ s own life, but we fail to believe this good news. Forgive us, God of grace. Protect us, for we belong to you. Sanctify us in your truth that our hope and joy may be complete; through Jesus Christ our Lord. *Sung Response Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us No. 575 Declaration of Pardon Hear the good news! To all and to each, where regret is real, God pronounces pardon and grants us the right to begin again. Thanks be to God!

3 *Sung Response Alleluia No. 589 CHILDREN S TIME Christian Education Leaders Recognition ANTHEM All Things Bright and Beautiful Brad Printz Sandy McKirahan, flute All things bright and beautiful, all things great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. The purple headed mountain, the river running by, the sunset and the morning, that brightens up the sky. The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, He made them everyone. He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell, how great is God Almighty, who has made all things well. All things bright and beautiful, all things great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. THE WORD Prayer for Illumination Let us pray: God of mercy, grant that the Word you speak this day may take root in our hearts, and bear fruit to your honor and glory, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. First Reading Acts 1:15-17; The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Psalm (Psalm 1) How Happy Are the Saints of God No. 457 Gospel Reading John 17:6-19 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sermon "JESUS PRAYS FOR US" *HYMN Thy Word Is a Lamp unto My Feet No. 458 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Study Catechism Q. 44 What do you affirm when you say that he descended into hell? A. That our Lord took upon himself the full consequences of our sinfulness, even the agony of abandonment by God, in order that we might be spared. Mark 15:34; Heb. 9:26; Heb. 9:26; Rom. 4:24-25 Q. 45 Why did Jesus have to suffer as he did? A. Because grace is more abundant and sin more serious than we suppose. However cruelly we may treat one another, all sin is primarily against God. God condemns sin, yet never judges apart from grace. In giving Jesus Christ to die for us, God took the burden of our sin into God s own self to remove it once and for all. The cross in all its severity reveals an abyss of sin swallowed up by the suffering of divine love. Rom. 8:1, 3-4; 1 Cor. 1:18; Rom. 5:8; Col. 1:20; James 2:13 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Choral Response Amen Greek Melody TITHES AND OFFERINGS Offertory Be Still, My Soul arr. Connie Moon

The General Assembly s portion (60 percent) provides leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised more than $8 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God s family.
