Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God (Psalm 42:5). Hope is a small word, but it is one of the most powerful. Why? Because in hope lies the power of the human soul to turn to God and live as if His promises are going to come true. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD (Psalm 31:24). Some people think hope is an emotion. I m feeling hopeful, they say, but true hope is a discipline, a determination to believe in Continued on Pg. 3

3 A Word From Mr. Rodewald Continued MARCH 2019 Overview March Virtue HOPE - Believing something good can come out of something bad. March Chapel Stories 5th - Lazarus Raised 12th - Palm Sunday 19th - Crucifixion & Resurrection 26th - Jesus Appears to Thomas Weekly Memory Verses March 4th - 8th Memory Verse But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 March 11th - 15th Memory Verse But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15 March 18th - 22nd Memory Verse Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:5 March 25th - 29th Memory Verse Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 God s reality and power, even when the world seems to be crashing down around you. That is the genius and the power of hope. It flies in the face of calamity, saying, The world can do its worst to me. But still I will hope. Still I will know that this is the day the Lord has made, and He will take care of me. The key to surviving any challenge or crisis is hope. Hope that Jesus loves you. Hope that He is, right now, working out a solution for you. Hope that the future you place in His hands will be better than the present you hold in your own. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Practice this hope, even if you have to will yourself to do it. With its power, you will overcome all things. Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31). During Chapel this month, we ll look at four stories that demonstrate hope. Teachers and staff will be on the lookout for students showing hope and making a difference in their classroom, at home, or in the community. At the end of the month, staff will nominate students they feel have demonstrated the trait of hope. Those students will receive the Eagle Character Award, celebrate with ice cream and have their picture in the April Newsletter. Classes may have one nominee, multiple nominees, or may not have a nominee. We are looking for students to really listen to God s Word and put it into action. *From Guideposts Finding Hope in Any Situation February Compassion Eagle Character Award Students: Aspen Applewhite (2), Payton Breedlove (1), Mya Burnett (4), Sophie Burnett (1), Addelynn Chastain (4), Liam Cleary (7), Josie Cuevas (K), Gabriel Demars (K), Greyson Ensley (K), Emma Heston (8), Eli Hidalgo (K), McKayla Holland (6), Blaze Hughes (4), Monica Lenzo (1), Paris Mayol (4), Callie Parker (4), Daniel Pendergrass (5), Maggie Pendergrass (2), Nyah Rivera (K), Mackenzie Rodewald (4), Cameron Shearl (K), Kevin Wake (K), Emma Watson (K), Jesse Weed (7), Jordan Westerman (5), Grayson Williams (K), Ava Wilmot (K), Mallory Wilson (6), and Anika Zuiderveen (8). 6 How to Lose (and Gain) Influence as a Parent By Carey Nieuwhof Every parent wants influence, and while a parent is the greatest influence in a child s life, that influence can wax and wane with the seasons. In fact, a lot of parents I know feel like they re losing influence. Influence is something to pay attention to no matter what stage of parenting you re at, because ultimately every parent is on a journey from control to influence. We start out with almost complete control of a child s life, but by the time our sons and daughters are 18 and ready to face life on their own, all we have left is influence. This raises an important question: How exactly does influence work? It works like this: We listen most to the people we love the most. Our kids inevitably do what you and I do: they listen most to the people they love the most. This means that as a parent, you need to establish an authentic, healthy relationship with your son or daughter if you hope be an influence in their lives. Influence is easy to lose, but it takes time to build up. Here are five easy ways to lose influence as a parent: 1. Threaten consequences, but never carry them out. Then your kids will know to never take you seriously. 2. Shame, guilt, and frustrate your children. Eventually they ll want to get as far away from you as they can. 3. Try to be their best friend. Your kids need a parent more than they need another buddy. (As my friend Jeff Brodie says, he s never met a 15 year old looking for a 45 year old best friend.) 4. Treat your spouse poorly. Your kids will lose respect for you rapidly. 5. Be inconsistent. If your kids never know where you stand, they ll lose trust in you. Influence can be lost quickly. But how do you gain it? How do you cultivate influence? How do you create a healthy relationship that lasts? Here are five ways to increase the influence you have with kids: 1. Do what you said you were going to do when you said you were going to do it. It cultivates trust, confidence and even respect. 2. Enforce limits. Don t think you re helping your kids by letting them off the hook with commitments, boundaries and responsibilities. One day, they ll thank you for it. 3. Treat one another with kindness. Treat the people closest to you with more kindness than anyone else (it s natural, by the way, to do the opposite). 4. Don t overindulge your kids. Let rewards be rewards. As a rule, you shouldn t give your kids rewards for nothing, or for simply doing what s expected of them. 5. Work on your own character. When your kids see you developing your faith and character, you will have a greater impact on their lives. If you think about it, the people who are gaining influence with, you are probably exhibiting some of the characteristics just listed. You love and respect them because they are responsible, kind, considerate people who stand for something and have a deep integrity. The people who are losing influence in your life are people who are inconsistent and emotionally unhealthy. While it takes discipline to develop your character and stick to sensible limits as a parent, over time, it will help you gain and keep influence with your kids. And eventually, influence is all we have left with our kids in any event. What other things have you seen that help parents lose or gain influence?
7 The month of March is a time for new beginnings and growth. Everywhere you look things are starting to bloom and grow. The same applies to all of the children here at Trimont; they have all grown so much this year. I pray that all of you are well in health and spirit and that God will continue to bless you and your family throughout this spring season. Mandyann & Ana March Preschool Memory Verses Exceeding great and precious promises are given unto us. 2 Peter 1:4 Jesus is the Son of God. John 20:31 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 March Focus Themes: All Creatures Great & Small, The Miracles of Jesus, St. Patrick s Day, & Easter *Chapel Focus: MADE We are made in God s image, which makes all of us pretty awesome. God knows everything about us, from the exact number of hairs on our head to our unique talents and personalities. God put so much love into making each individual person, so we should value others as much as we value ourselves. Scripture Focus: Psalm 139:14 I am fearfully and wonderfully made. March 5 - Wonderfully Made March 12 - You Are Worth More March 19 - Respect Myself March 26 - Respect Others *3s-PreK participate in weekly chapel services, every Tuesday from 9:00-9:20 in the K-8 Chapel. We sing 3 worship songs with hand motions and watch a Bible Story video based on that month s theme.
