1 eagle News Trimont Christian Academy Monthly Newsletter February 2019 A Word from Mr. Rodewald "And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things." Mark 6:34 Sometimes I think Christians regard nonbelievers as the enemy. Preachers will rant and rave about certain sins people are committing. But let s remember something: behind that sin is an empty, searching, lost person whom God loves. We are not called to condemn. We are called to appeal to nonbelievers with the message of the gospel. We need compassion. Jesus had it overflowing from His life. He was moved by the needs of others. When He saw Mary and Martha weeping over the death of their brother, Lazarus, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled (John 11:33). That phrase carries the idea of physical, emotional, and spiritual anguish. Jesus is the only one who can accurately say, I feel your pain. As He watched Mary and Martha weeping, His heart went out to them. He was in anguish, too. He hurt for them. He hurt with them. And He wept. That s our Savior. 3 FEB 2019 Overview A Word From Mr. Rodewald Continued Yet He felt compassion, saying, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Matthew 23: 37). Paul wrote to the Philippians, Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus (2:5). We should seek to imitate the Lord and have compassion. If we want to be used by God in any capacity, this must be foremost in our minds and hearts - not obligation, not mere duty, not guilt, but a God-given burden for people. (From Greg Laurie s Motivated By Compassion ) During Chapel this month, we ll look at four stories that demonstrate compassion. Teachers and staff will be on the lookout for students showing compassion and making a difference in their classroom, at home, or in the community. At the end of the month, staff will nominate students they feel have demonstrated the trait of compassion. Those students will receive the Eagle Character Award, celebrate with ice cream and have their picture in the March Newsletter. Classes may have one nominee, multiple nominees, or may not have a nominee. We are looking for students to really listen to God s Word and put it into action. Character Trait Compassion - Caring enough to do something about someone else s needs. Chapel Stories 5th - Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet 2th - Meet People s Needs 19th - Feeding 5,000 26th - Give in Secret Weekly Memory Verses Feb. 4th-8th Memory Verse If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:17 Feb. 11th-15th Memory Verse Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the Lord comforts his people, and will have compassion on his afflicted ones. Isaiah 49:13 Feb. 18th-22nd Memory Verse Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12 Feb. 25th - March 1st Memory Verse Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! 5 Do As I Say, Not As I Do By Doug Fields Have the words Because I said so ever come out of your mouth? This quick fix answer we sometimes give our kids when they ask Why? can ultimately undermine our authority as parents. Because I said so was never a satisfying answer when you were a kid; it s no different now that you re the parent. When it comes to guiding and teaching our kids, do as I do is far more effective than do as I say. Whether we admit it or not, our lives are on display 24/ 7. Our children are always watching and learning from us, from both our positive and negative characteristics and behaviors. Intentional parents understand this reality and think about the messages their actions are sending. Actions always speak louder than words. This isn t to say that intentional parents don t mess up. Even intentional parents are imperfect, and our actions sometimes reflect that reality. But those imperfections speak volumes, too. Because your kids don t need you to be a perfect parent or spiritual giant. The perception that we need to be perfect or overly spiritual as parents is intimidating and can create insecurity. The fact is, kids most need to see their parents genuinely trying to follow the person and teachings of Jesus. Faith conversations (the What I say stuff) must be validated by our lifestyle (the what I do reality). We can tell them all day long that Jesus makes a difference in our lives but as they grow, our kids need to actually see that belief lived out in our lives. And the really good news? Your kids are picking up some great qualities from you. It s easy to focus on our negative characteristics and forget about the positive things we re passing on. Let s be honest: we re all a bundle of strengths and weaknesses, and our children see both. It can only help your parenting to take some time to reflect on the messages that are being communicated by your life to ensure that the positives create more vivid pictures for your kids than the negative. The reality that your kids are watching isn t meant to scare you or make you feel defeated. Instead, it is a reminder that sometimes what we re saying and what we re doing don t actually line up. When you think about the most important things you want to pass on to your kids, start now to consider whether your actions in those areas of your own life are the ones you want on display. Your kids know you re not perfect. But what they may not know is what they re supposed to do when they mess up. They need you to model it.
6 The Preschool Press The month of February is a time to celebrate love. In just a couple of weeks, Valentine s Day will be here. There are so many powerful stories of love in the Bible, from Adam and Eve to Abraham and Sarah or Mary and Joseph. The most important love story from the Bible will always be the love Jesus has for us. Join us this month as we try to redirect the cultural obsession with romance back to the love that should characterize the Christian life. Mandyann & Ana February Focus Themes: Love One Another, Valentine s Day, Ground Hog Day, President s Day *Chapel Focus: Love Bug Knowing Jesus loves us and wants to be our friend forever changes everything. God gave us a forever friend that wants to spend time with us and help us. Jesus loves us no matter what. Scripture Focus: Ephesians 3:18 How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. Feb. 5 - Jesus & the Children Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." ~ 1 John 4:7-8 February Preschool Memory Verses Trust in the Lord with all your heart Proverbs 3:5 Feb Mary & Martha Feb The Centurion Feb The Thankful Woman *3s-PreK participate in weekly chapel services, every Tuesday from 9:00-9:20 in the K-8 Chapel.
