C: And also with you. P: Brothers & sisters, Scripture says that All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 6:23) It also reminds us that The wages of sin is death. (Romans 3:23) In short, sin is a big deal. Unfortunately, we cannot hide our sin. As Scripture teaches, Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:13) Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Have mercy on me, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Cleanse me. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. (Psalm 51) 1 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us all our sins. So the Pastor assures our believing hearts of God s promise forgiveness of sins. 4

5 P: Brothers & sisters, Scripture says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just; he will forgive us all of our sins. (1 John 1:9) This is because: Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and he was raised to life for our justification. (Romans 4:25) God did this because He so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Go, then, in the peace of God's forgiveness. C: Alleluia! P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 6 The Lesson Isaiah 54: Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood. 5 For your Maker is your husband the L Almighty is his name the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. 6 The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit a wife who married young, only to be rejected, says your God. 7 For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back. 8 In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you, says the L your Redeemer. 9 To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again. 10 Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the L, who has compassion on you. 6

7 Psalm of the Day Psalm 23 The L is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; he guides me in paths of righteousness for his name s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other. 10 The Message The Family That Stays Together... 1 John 4:16b-21 God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. 12 We Confess Our Faith in God The Apostles Creed 2 (please stand) (be seated) I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 13

Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
