All the way back in the garden, when Adam and Eve first chose their own way instead of God s, God started His plan to give all of us a chance to come back to Him. And time and again, God is patient with us when we make daily choices that separate us from Him. He waits for us to turn back to Him. As a fruit of the Spirit, patience is foundational in the way that we reflect God s character. When we show patience, we are less likely to hurt our relationships with others. We are more likely to trust that God has something better for us in the future. Patience is waiting until later for what you want now. Waiting isn t always easy. When having patience seems too difficult, the Lord will give us strength to wait. At its core, patience is fueled by faith. We trust that what we re waiting for is best for us. Continued on page 2...
2 A Word From Mr. Rodewald Continued But patience is more than just waiting. It s also about our attitude while we wait. A patient person can wait with joy even when the situation might be stressful or anxious. A patient person avoids searching or settling for a quick fix. A patient person will remember that we generally prefer to be around someone who can wait well. For God, it seems as though patience is all about relationships with people. Even after we sinned, He still pursued us. He has waited time after time for people to repent and work to make things right. And it s something He still does for us today. During Chapel this month, we ll look at stories that demonstrate patience. Teachers and staff will be on the lookout for students showing patience and making a difference in their classroom, at home, or in the community. At the end of the month, staff will nominate students they feel have demonstrated the trait of patience. Those students will receive the Eagle Character Award at the Honors Chapel on May 22. Classes may have one nominee, multiple nominees, or may not have a nominee. We are looking for students to really listen to God s Word and put it into action. 3 Three Qualities of a Serving Family By Brooklyn Lindsey Have you ever wondered what makes people who enthusiastically serve others good at it? And how do they find the time or energy? We feel like the only thing we ve been serving lately are the pickups and drop offs, and a frozen pizza dinner. Working with volunteers and leaders in my community (many of them parents) gives me a hope, because I see a lot of people who really get what it means to serve. They love in ways that are selfless and give in ways that are sacrificial. Even while juggling carpools, errands, activity schedules, pets, change, school, homework, work, relationships, leisure, church I ve seen parents and kids navigate all these things while still being a great example of what it means to serve. But how do they do it? How are they showing up with meals, jumping in when help is needed, and saying yes when nobody is saying yes? How did they become the people who I want my own kids to be around more? What makes Jenn, Andy, Daniel, Emily, Kyle, Savannah, Carol, and dozens of others my serving heroes? Are they really supernaturally gifted to serve? I think the answer is yes. And no. I m thinking they are supernaturally gifted but they wouldn t say they are. Every human is created in the image of God, so they are automatically supernaturally gifted. But it takes a lifestyle that humbly accepts imperfection while also accepting responsibility to love others consistently. It s a generous way of life that involves the interaction of a few things: Humility..Grit..Generosity When three of these things collide in a person or in a family, beautiful things happen. Kids and parents become uniquely aware of their abilities to do immeasurably more just by being themselves. And these three things don t always automatically just happen. They can be taught, encouraged, and learned. HUMILITY It takes humility for people to show deep care for others to see outside your own story and into another. Being able to set aside one s self is a gift. When you act humbly, knowing you aren t perfect and you re not entitled, you re able to give all of who you are. Give kids little tasks that require extra help. Stay close by and help them communicate their needs by reinforcing the positive practice of serving even when it feels like they can t do it. Start by letting them help with the gardening or cooking, taking a neighbors newspaper to them, or even serving communion at church. Continued on page 4...
4 Three Qualities of a Serving Family continued. Give older kids stories to tell that aren t their own. Give a typically me-centered teenager a chance to be a voice for doesn t have a voice yet. It can help them think of others over themselves and will nurture empathy. someone who GRIT Grit is when you say yes to a story that s bigger than yourself and then stay with it. It s serving without apology and inviting others in. Grit is what I see when parents, despite their hectic lives and schedules, find ways to show up for people together as a family. So, work on your family grit. Encourage each other not to give up even when you feel like quitting before the job is done. Start thinking long term. Listen to your kids ideas about how they would like to serve and help them come up with ways to do it over a longer period of time. Commit to a goal and help them meet it, even if it takes longer than expected. GENEROSITY Generosity is living with an abundant heart of trust instead of living in fear of scarcity. Generosity is displayed when a person begins to believe that all they have was meant to be shared, and they give joyfully. Help kids learn generosity by providing opportunities to give. When kids experience the joy of giving, they ll want to be more generous. It could be as simple helping them share a toy with another child. Help teenagers learn how to be generous by challenging them to change a habit for the sake of others. For instance, happens when a teenager gives up her cell phone and the bill that goes with it to support an orphanage instead. generosity Humililty.Grit.Generosity. Pick a quality and camp out in it this month. Explore what it means to be humble together, to fight for something good or to give generously together. together,

7 May Focus The month of May is a busy time as we have our parent conferences and our Spring Program & Graduation. It s hard to believe that we are in the last month of our academic school year. The children have grown so much this year and we are so excited that we are able to be a part of it. As we close out on another year, and as our PreK students get ready to continue to a Kindergarten classroom, I would like to take a moment and include some of my favorite biblical quotes to encourage their future academic success. MandyAnn Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3 Whatever you do work at it with all your heart. Colossians 3:23 Themes: Joshua and Moses, Mother s Day, Graduation, and Flowers *Chapel Focus: Work of Art When Jesus went back to heaven, He promised that the story wasn t over. Jesus wants for each one of us to play a part in His great story. And to play our parts, it all starts with trusting God. Because of what Jesus has done, we know that God has a plan and that plan includes us! Scripture Focus: Psalm 33:11 The plans of the Lord stand firm forever. May 1 - Joseph s Coat May 8 - Joseph in Jail May 15 - Joseph Saves the Grain May 23 - Joseph Forgives *3s-PreK participate in weekly chapel services, every Tuesday from 9:00-9:20 in the K-8 Chapel. We sing 3 worship songs with hand motions and watch a Bible Story video based on that month s theme. May Preschool Memory Verses Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 For I walk by faith not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
