4 Object Lessons for Chapel Talks About the Object Lessons for Chapel Talks In these 44 object lessons for chapel talks, based on the appointed Gospel readings for the Sundays of the school year, students learn from God s Word as they prepare to hear the good news proclaimed on the coming Sunday. Each lesson includes suggested Bible readings, hymns, a children s message and a brief prayer. These talks may be used for school chapels, homeroom devotions or for Sunday children s sermons. John 6:68 Bible Readings Isaiah 55:10-11; 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; John 6:58-60 and 66-69; Psalm 119: Songs Jesus Loves Me, This I Know Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens Needed A (heavy!) backpack filled with school textbooks and a Bible Message L L (Drag the heavy backpack across the floor.) This backpack is so heavy! I can t even lift it. What grade do you think the student might be in with a backpack like this? (Let children suggest grade levels.) Today we are starting a new school year. You will be starting a new grade level this year, and maybe you are worried that your backpack will be this heavy every night! You probably won t have this much homework, but you will learn a lot of new things this year. (Pull books out of the pack.) You will study math, science and history. You will practice reading and writing. (Take out the Bible.) The book that is different from all of these others is the Bible. These other books are very important and helpful, but this CTJ 5

6 book is God s Word. When we listen to God s Word and when we read his Word, we learn about our Savior, Jesus Christ. In the Gospel lesson for today, Jesus is teaching the people. He tells them that he is the Bread of life. The people who feed on the Bread of life, that is, the people who listen to Jesus words and believe in him, will have eternal life. But some of the people listening do not understand. They do not believe in Jesus. They say his words are too hard to understand, and they walk away from him. So Jesus asks his disciples, Do you want to go away too? Peter answers for all of them: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. It is only through faith in Jesus that our sins are forgiven. It is only through faith in Jesus that we have eternal life. During this school year you will learn many new and wonderful things. Most important of all, you will often hear the words of Jesus in your classroom, in chapel and in church and Sunday school. You will learn that Jesus came to die on the cross so our sins can be forgiven. You will learn that Jesus rose from the dead to give us eternal life. Whenever you can, listen to Jesus! Let s repeat the words that Peter said: Lord, to whom shall we go? (Repeat) You have the words of eternal life. (Repeat) Prayer LL Jesus, you have the words of eternal life. Bless us during this school year. Guide all of our teachers and students with your Spirit, and throughout this school year help us to listen to your words and follow you. Amen. 6 CTJ

James 1:22 Bible Readings Isaiah 29:13-16; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Mark 7:1-13; Psalm 1 Songs The Law of God is Good and Wise, God Loves Me Dearly Needed Towel; hand sanitizer Message LL At the beginning of a new school year, you may have new rules to learn. Rules keep us safe and help each student have the best school year possible. Maybe your parents gave you some rules to follow, too: Pay attention in class. Do your homework. Don t get your new jacket dirty! There s another rule we follow at home and at school: Wash your hands before you eat! Why do we have that rule? (Let students answer.) Washing our hands (use the towel) or using hand sanitizer (use sanitizer) helps to keep us from getting sick. But when Jesus lived on earth, sometimes people washed their hands for a different reason. The Jewish leaders made a lot of extra rules. They thought they could earn CTJ 7

8 God s favor by keeping their rules. One of their rules was about hand washing. When Jesus disciples didn t wash their hands, some of the religious leaders complained to Jesus. Jesus told the religious leaders that they made their own rules more important than God s commands. Sometimes they obeyed their own rules and ignored God s commandments! We can never be perfect enough to please God. But we know that God is pleased with us because we belong to Jesus. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. Our sins are washed away in his blood. God s Word tells us, Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. We shouldn t just hear God s Word and then forget it. We do what God tells us in his Word. The Holy Spirit lives in us and helps us to be doers of the word. Today you have heard God s Word. Now, in your classrooms and at home, you can follow Jesus and be doers of his Word! Prayer LL Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross so that our sins can be forgiven. We have heard your Word and we want to be doers of your Word, too. Help us to follow you today in everything we think and do and say. Amen. 8 CTJ
