1 The Light Solon Community Church Sherbrook Park Dr. Solon, Ohio soloncommunitychurch.org Easter/Spring 2017 See the land, her Easter keeping, Rises as her Maker rose. Seeds, so long in darkness sleeping, Burst at last from winter snows. Earth with heaven above rejoices ~Charles Kingsley
2 PASTOR S REPORT-April 2017 ON THE EIGHTH DAY We all know that a week has seven days-every week-sunday through Saturday. That is, except for one week in the year the week that culminates with Easter Sunday. That week in particular doesn t end on Saturday but rather on Sunday, an Eighth Day, which then leads us into the next week. Think about the most important account in Scripture, the story of Jesus s Resurrection. We know that Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and everyone assumed that was the end of the carpenter from Nazareth, whether you were saddened as one of his disciples or glad to be free of this man whose preaching defied all of the assumptions of the day and angered the religious and secular authorities with his world-changing message. On Saturday people were supposed to get back to their lives as they were before Jesus was even born. But, of course, that isn t what happened. This was a unique week, so, on the eighth day, Jesus came back into their world. Jesus rose from death and continued his messianic mission. And the world has been touched by the events of the eighth day ever since. This year has been for the Solon Community Church family a time to focus on Strengthening our Foundation-Brick by Brick. Just think how our vision of reinvigorating our church can become even more achievable if we consider and act on the reality that we are living in the eighth day times. We easily forget that Easter is the most important day in the Christian calendar, surpassing even Christmas. The Resurrection is the reason that Jesus s life did not end on that Friday. The sun rose on a new day. Thankfully, the three women awakened that Sunday morning and together journeyed to the Garden. Had they not, we would have all missed the good news that death had not had the last word. Just as Spring blossoms appear on the trees, we too can blossom as individuals and as a church. The eighth day means that nothing ever again would be the same and that we are invited to journey to that Garden of new life throughout our lives so that we remain strong in our faith, committed to our mission, and grateful that we live in community with one another. Easter really is an extraordinary day! All of us who can should make our eighth day journey to the Garden of worship on Easter Sunday morning. That day is the foundation of our existence as followers of Jesus. We just might get the courage to really preach the Good News, change the parts of our lives that look like Good Friday to Resurrection lives and trust in and work for all of the possibilities for our lives and the life of our church. And then, of course, keep coming to the Garden for renewal. We will begin our Easter Sunday worship singing Christ the Lord is Risen Today. The hymn goes on to remind us that made like him, like him we rise. Resurrection Blessings to all of us, Rev. Wood

5 Easter Cantata Palm Sunday, April 9th News from the Choir Loft The SCC Choir and Soloists will present selections from Jesus Christ Superstar. Mark Snyder-Schulte as Judas Jeremy Gilpatric as Jesus Megan Elk as Mary Magdalene Joseph Guy as Caiaphas Jesus Christ Superstar is a dramatized version of the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Selections include: Heaven on their Minds Judas can see that things are going badly awry and that all the good work Jesus has done will soon be swept away. The situation is volatile and the authorities are beginning to focus their attentions on Jesus s activities. His followers are getting carried away with too many thoughts of heaven on their minds. What s the Buzz The Apostles are quizzing Jesus on his plans they re keen to know what lies in store for them. Everything s Alright Mary Magdalene tries to calm Jesus with an expensive ointment and tells him not to get worried. Judas snatches the ointment from her and accuses her of wasting resources which would be better served helping the poor. Jesus retorts by saying that there will always be poverty in the world and that they will never be able to help everyone. Hosanna A mass of people surround Jesus as he triumphantly arrives in Jerusalem. I Don t Know How to Love Him With Jesus asleep in her arms, Mary contemplates her relationship with this man. She has never experienced love in her life before and she realizes that her entire world has been turned upside down by Jesus. The Last Supper Jesus gathers his twelve apostles together. He knows what lies ahead and asks his friends to remember him when they eat and drink. Looking around at their blank faces, Jesus becomes incensed and tells them that he must be mad to think that any of them will remember him after he dies. He turns on Peter telling him that he will deny ever having known him by the end of the night and then reveals that one of his apostles will betray him. Judas leaps up and confronts Jesus and an argument between the two men ensues. Jesus tells Judas to get on with what he has planned and Judas accuses Jesus of ruining everything that they have achieved together. Gethsemane Left alone in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus ponders his fate, questioning whether he can go through with what he knows lies in store over the next three days. Could We Start Again, Please? With Jesus locked in a cell, Mary and the apostles can see that everything they had hoped for has gone horribly wrong. They wish they could turn the clock back and start again. Superstar A delirious Jesus is taunted by a hallucination of Judas asking him how he could let everything get so out of hand and whether he really is who he says he is.
6 Walk MS: Cleveland 2017 On Saturday, April 22, the annual MS Walk will be held at The Galleria (1301 E. 9 th Street). This will be the sixth year for our church to participate in this event to help raise critical funds to give hope to everyone impacted by multiple sclerosis through research and life changing programs and services. We are participating in memory of Jeff Markle this year. Our Solon Community Church team is called the Solon Stars and we once again hope to raise $1,500 to help fight this disease. There are four ways to donate: *Cash may be given to any Board of Benevolence member *Checks may be written to the National MS Society and can also be given to a board member *Checks may be written to Solon Community Church and note that it is for the MS Walk. These checks may be deposited in the offering plate or mailed to the church *Donations may also be made online directly to our team by going to our team website: fr_id=28665&pg=team&team_id= We would also like to have a group of walkers participate on April 22 at which time we will hand in our donation to the MS officials. Please tell a board member or call the church office if you are interested in walking that day! Remember: We will walk in memory of Jeff Markle.

The staff at Pawsabilities were very appreciative of the blankets. When the pets are adopted their hand made blanket will go with them to their new home. Thanks Christian Ed. for making a difference.

12 Happy Easter The Legend of the Easter Egg One day a poor peddler went to the marketplace to sell a basket of eggs. He came upon a crowd mocking a man who staggered with a heavy cross on which he was about to be crucified. The peddler ran to his aid, leaving the basket by the roadside. When he returned, he found the eggs transformed into exquisite designs of bright color. The man was CHRIST; the peddler, Simon. And the eggs were to become a symbol of rebirth for all mankind.
