2 PRELUDE GATHERING * Please stand as you are able. Chorale Variations on Luther s Von Himmel hoch M. Burkhardt Jeannie Lee, organist WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (Please sign the Friendship Pad and pass it to others.) STRIKING THE BELL AND LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES INTROIT 455 *CALL TO WORSHIP In the quiet and the chaos, in the peace and the confusion, Jesus Christ comes to us, making his home among us and naming us as his friends. In him there is no east or west, in him no north or south, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. Now that faith has come, in Christ Jesus we are all children of God through faith. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all are one in Christ Jesus. He has broken down the dividing wall the hostility between us making peace through the cross and putting hostility to death through it. Who is our neighbor? In Christ, we have all become neighbors. God of great and God of small, God of one and God of all, You are love. Help us to love and serve you well. *HYMN 767 PRAYER OF CONFESSION (seated, unison) *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 752 Together We Serve ASSURANCE OF PARDON Friends, believe the good news of the gospel: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Dona nobis pacem (Grant us Peace) (The congregation sings the Latin below as Hebrew and Arabic are added.) Dona nobis pacem, pacem. Dona nobis pacem. Elliot Eichmann Jon Fagg Jesus, we ask that you take these prayers to the heart of God. We know the ways in which sin separates us from God. We confess our reticence to claim the sin in our lives. Today may we move past the prideful notions of our piety and look closer at what we don t do. For sometimes the greatest sin of all is our own complicity with what is wrong in the world. We want to love as you commanded, Jesus, but too often catch ourselves justifying the injustice of hunger, poverty, war, and all the prejudices we didn t know we had. Forgive us so that we may catch ourselves righting our wrongs. Forgive us so that the lessons we learn at the Spirit s nudging may help bring the peace and love you seek in our families, the church, and the world. Help us to be more holy in our hearts. (silent confession) Amen. (Peace & Global Witness 2017 Worship Resource for World Communion Sunday, Presbyterian Church USA) *PASSING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you! And also with you. Eleanor Eichmann and Hayden Werner Listen to the Word That God Has Spoken Listen to the word that God has spoken; listen to the One who is close at hand; listen to the voice that began creation; listen even if you don t understand. Jaxson Frazier

5 CHILDREN S SONG 2233 TIME WITH CHILDREN PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Where Children Belong This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song, this is where children belong. SCRIPTURE READINGS Sing the Faith Jacob Christiansen ANTHEM God So Loved the World J. Stainer God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, That whoso believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, But that the world through Him might be saved. Mark 12: One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, Which commandment is the first of all? 29 Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; 33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question. Galatians 5: For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14 For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. SERMON Through Love Alone Rev. Jan Butin *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (A Brief Statement of Faith) In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all people to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE *PRAYER OF DEDICATION RESPONSE TO THE WORD (Today we receive a special offering. Please use the Peace and Global Witness envelopes found in your bulletin.) Old Hundredth Praise God for Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise Triune God, whom we adore. arr. J. Ness Beck

6 INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING THE LORD S PRAYER *BENEDICTION *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE 765 THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Loving and gracious God,... with many tongues, yet one voice, we honor you saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We bless you for your love, made known to us through Jesus Christ.... Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us...now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Song of Remembrance T. Fettke Do this in remembrance of me. This bread is my body, this cup is my blood; share them among you in love. This is my body given for you; this cup is the New Covenant, sealed with my blood. Whenever you eat this bread; whenever you drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death 'til he comes. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION *HYMN 756 O God of Every Nation Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. SENDING May the God of Hope Go With Us (The congregation may sing this in either English or Spanish.) May the God of hope go with us every day, filling all our lives with love and joy and peace. May the God of justice speed us on our way, bringing light and hope to every land and race. Praying, let us work for peace; singing, share our joy with all; working for a world that s new, faithful when we hear Christ s call. Burkhardt Today s Reformation Hymn: Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her (From Heav'n Above to Earth I Come) Published in Geistliche Lieder, Wittenburg, 1539 Melody & Text: Martin Luther Today's hymn, written to tell the Christmas story as found in Luke's gospel, illustrates today's sermon theme of Love, as lived out on earth and into eternity through Jesus. Luther wrote the lyrics in 1534 as a Christmas story for his children, setting the text to a well-known secular tune of the time. He later wrote original music for the text (1539) and that is the melody heard in today's Prelude and Postlude.
