1 First United Presbyterian Church Sunday Worship 8:30 & 11:00 a.m. Christian Education For All Ages Sundays, 9:30 a.m. 695 E. Calvin St. Fayetteville, AR (479) Directions We are near the intersection of Mission Blvd. and Old Wire Rd. From Old Wire, turn up either Birwin St. or Calvin St. We are at the top of the hill. Office Hours Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Behold! I am making everything new! - Revelation 21:5 So many wonderful new things are happening this fall around the church campus, and in our ministries, and in our lives! Worshiping in Fellowship Hall has brought a new energy, a new closeness, and a new flexibility to our life together. The Sanctuary renovation is progressing steadily, with new elements, of the expanded indoor and outdoor gathering spaces emerging and visual elements including projection, added to the sanctuary. Our Outreach ministry team has been organizing the congregation to assist more significantly in addressing local hunger and homelessness with the money, time, and talents of the congregation. Our youth ministry has been seeking input from youth and parents for fresh ideas and exciting new gatherings. Our young adult participation is increasing again with the return of students to the university and United Campus Ministry. Spiritual growth opportunities for all ages are in full swing, and we are growing in Christ, grateful for God s many blessings. In the midst of all this, the recent Ministry Team Retreat involved over 70 members and staff of the congregation in prayerfully reflecting on what it means for us to grow whole by filling in the holes in our congregation. Fayetteville is among the youngest small cities in the country, with an average age of 28. We hope and pray that we can come to better reflect the demographics of our community and also that we will continually increase our cultural, racial, and socioeconomic diversity. Much of our discussion and sharing on the Ministry Team Retreat focused on ways our congregation can increase membership and participation of people under 40. Research in the book Growing Young indicates the six goals for congregations: Unlock keychain leadership. This involves sharing authority and leadership and influence with members of all ages, rather than keeping it among a few. Empathize with today s young people. Take Jesus ministry and message seriously. Fuel a warm community. Prioritize young people (and families) everywhere. Be the best neighbors. Of course, many of these core commitments already characterize our congregation. But we can always do better. Our ministry teams reflected on how to broaden the participation of younger people in our leadership, our worship, our fellowship, and our outreach. You will be hearing more about each of these core commitments in the weeks and months to come. Please continue in prayer for God s ongoing direction for FUPC, that God s mission and vision for us would be realized through the positive steps we take in this direction. In Christ, Revs. Phil and Jan Butin Volume 52 Issue 8 September 2018

3 Adult Spiritual Growth This fall we are offering three adult spiritual growth opportunities on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Each group has its own unique style and discussion topic. We hope you ll join us! The Thoughtful Christians discussion is based on Searching for Truth: Confessing Christ in an Uncertain World by Thomas W. Currie III, who led the Charlotte extension of Union Presbyterian Theological Seminary for many years. How can we avoid the temptation either to think that we alone possess the truth or to trim the truth to make it less offensive to the world? How can we speak the truth as truth, yet speak it in love? The Present Word: God s World and God s People is exploring Genesis in a three-part unit on God s creation of the universe, earth, and people led by Dennis Brewer and Jane Steinkraus in Calvin 203. A Drop-In Group for adults of all ages is reading and discussing Recapturing the Wonder: Transcendent Faith in a Disenchanted World, by Mike Cosper. It is led by Brett and Sara Torbett in Upper Witherspoon. Stephen Ministry FUPC is a Stephen Ministry congregation. Whether you are facing a personal change, concern, or challenge or would just like someone to talk to and pray with, Stephen Ministers are here to help! FUPC currently has Stephen Ministers trained in listening and compassionate care. Please contact Rev. Jan Butin ( or jbutin@fupcfay.org) for more information. We are here for you. Stewardship One definition of Stewardship is that we recognize that everything we are and everything we have is God s gracious gift, so we do our best to invest or use it all for God s purposes. Stewardship is giving back. Stewardship means returning a portion of our time, talents, and treasures to the church. This church is blessed with a congregation that has reflected on and responded to everything that Stewardship means in our daily lives. Members have been generous in their pledges and given so much time and talent to our youth, our mission trips, Bible School, choir, the church renovation project, our move to Fellowship Hall this summer, and so much more. God loves a joyful giver and generosity comes from within, not from seeking any reward. Thank you for the love and support you have shown to this church. Chris Bell, Stewardship Moderator Help us share the peace and love of Christ with all who worship with us on Sunday mornings. If you would like to greet members and visitors, please contact Michelle Price ( or michelle.price@fayar.net).
