(verses 1, 2, and 4) Fernandez-Bendeck Family Glory to God PRAYER OF CONFESSION (seated) Holy God, you sent your Son to be baptized among sinners, to seek and save the lost. Although in our baptism we have professed to be his followers, we confess that too often, we have played it safe. May we, who have been baptized in his name, never turn away from the world, but reach out in love to rescue the wayward; by the mercy of Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2 TIME WITH CHILDREN PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 3:1-17 In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, 2 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. 3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 Now John wore clothing of camel s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit worthy of repentance. 9 Do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10 Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. SERMON REAFFIRMATION OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT * PROFESSION OF FAITH Embracing God s Claim on Lives RESPONSE TO THE WORD Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world? I renounce them. Who is your Lord and Savior? Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. Will you be Christ s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love? I will, with God s help. Do we, members of this congregation, wholeheartedly commit ourselves to pursue our mission and vision in the year 2018, freely sharing of our money, time, talents, and gifts of grace? We do, by God s Spirit. * PROFESSION OF FAITH Do you place your faith in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Do you place your faith in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Rev. Phil Butin

3 born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. Do you place your faith in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM We rejoice that you claimed us in our baptism, and that by your grace we are born anew. By your Holy Spirit renew us. Empower us to do your will. May we continue forever in the risen life of Christ. Amen. REAFFIRMING OUR BAPTISM REAFFIRMATION OF CONGREGATIONAL MISSION AND VISION Called to be a light on the hill, we boldly proclaim and serve Christ, the hope of our changing world. Reaching out as a visible expression of God s grace, we will meet people where we are, inviting all into Christ s family through engaging worship, fellowship, learning, and service. SELF-OFFERING There will be baskets at the front and back of the sanctuary for any financial gifts you have brought to offer the Lord. You may bring any gifts forward now, or place them in the plates on the stand at the rear of the sanctuary as you leave. OFFERTORY 490 Wash, O God, Your Sons and Daughters Glory to God We invite all who are able, to come forward for a moment of prayer and rededication at the baptismal font. Take a pebble from the water as a remembrance and reaffirmation of God s faithfulness in your baptismal covenant. Lafayette St. to share lunch and conversation with the Fernandez-Bendeck. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING WORSHIP AND THE RECEPTION, Presbyterian Women invite helpers to take down the beautiful Chrismon tree that has adorned our sanctuary during Advent and Christmas. The youth will be taking down the outdoor nativity scene after the reception this afternoon. The more help they have, the faster the process will be. You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit, by James K. A. Smith, helps us recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices. During our reading, we will explore worship as the "imagination station" that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom. The book is now available in hardback through the Church Office for $13. MODERATORS TRAINING FOR ALL who will lead committees this year takes place right before the first Session meeting of 2018 on January 14 at 5:00 p.m. This will help immensely with the work you will do.
