Calob Rundell Let Your Light Shine Greetings friends! I am writing this message to you from church camp! It is my practice to spend the last week of July each year with high school students at Beaver Creek camp near South Fork, Colorado. It is my favorite week of the year. We run around in the woods, we play games, we sing songs, and we worship. Each year of camp has a theme that is based on scripture. This year s theme is The light shines in the darkness and is based on words from John 1:4-5. The metaphor of light and dark is possibly the strongest metaphor we have in our shared human experience. We think of light in a very positive way, and darkness in a very negative way. Throughout the scriptures, and especially in the Gospels, we find this metaphor of light. Jesus several times refers to His message and life as the light. And he also implores us in Matthew 5:14-16 to let our light shine. We know the light that Jesus brings to our lives and our world: grace, forgiveness, wisdom, guidance, example, and love. But what about you? What is your light, and how can you let it shine? All of us have a light to shine in our world. Each and every one of us have gifts to share with the world that can make it a little brighter. And friend, there is plenty in our world that could be a little brighter. There is plenty of darkness in our communities and our world where light can shine all the brighter. Here at camp, I asked the youth to name the darkness that they know to be true from their lives. It was sobering to hear their list: poverty, racism, sexism, abuse, suicide, war, murder, etc, etc. We know these things to be true here in Salida. We know these things to be true because they have impacted our lives. In those first words of the Gospel of John, the writer tells us that even though the darkness is real, the light will always outlast it and shine in the midst of it. You, yes you, have what it takes to be that light that shines in the darkness. You have a light that the world really needs. Who you are is important. Look for those opportunities to be a blessing to those around. Be sensitive to those people and moments around you where your light can bring hope, relationship, and healing. Peace, Rev. Calob Rundell pastor@salidaumc.org 1

3 Sharing Our Prayers, Praise, Needs & Celebrations Jerry Long On the morning of July 6 th, our beloved Jerry Long passed away peacefully at this home while surrounded by family and friends. A beautiful service, was held on Saturday, July 15 th, complete with a Cookies and Ice Cream Celebration following the service. Memorials in Jerry s name that are donated to the church have been designated to benefit the Window s Restoration Project a project that Jerry was very excited about. From Susan Little Dear Church Family: I'm sending a big, heartfelt thanks to each one of you for the wonderful ways you supported me with prayers, cards, and the beautiful prayer shawl. On June 28th, the surgeon removed a very large, benign ovarian mass. This was my first surgery so I have nothing to compare, but I'm feeling VERY blessed. I'd also requested prayers for Carey, our daughter-in-law and breast cancer survivor. She underwent surgery a couple of weeks ago for a rare type of oral cancer. I spoke with her again yesterday; she is now making good progress and feels positive about her prognosis. It is truly a blessing to be a part of HIS family in Salida. In gratitude to all, Susan Little Invitation from Skip & Sue Glasgow - We d like your help! Skip s mother, Harriet, is turning 100 years old on August 26 th. We d like for her to get as many birthday cards as possible. With your help, we hope she can get at least 100! If so moved, please send a card to the following address at The Bridge at Alamosa: Harriet Glasgow 3407 Carroll St. Room 66 Alamosa, CO We do request that you let her know that you are from the Salida United Methodist Church so she is not confused by getting cards with unfamiliar names. Thank you for your help and support! With God s love, Skip and Sue Glasgow Can You Help Sam & Anita Scanga? - It was recently brought to the attention of the Women s Bible Study Group that Sam Scanga, Anita s husband, had emergency intestinal surgery which resulted in the placement of a colostomy. He is at recovering at home. Their daughter was with them last week and son is there this week. There is someone coming next week. 3 While the Scangas are investigating all the health care possibilities to meet their family needs, there are some immediate ways that our church community can help the Scangas. In addition to the offering of prepared meals for Anita and Sam, Sam s colostomy bag needs to be changed daily. Since Anita is neither able to cook nor change the bag, we are hopeful that you know someone who is responsible and educated, who could use part time work and would be valuable support for the Scangas. If you know someone who might be interested, please have them call the Scanga s at: Regarding the need for prepared meals, the Women s Bible Study Group started a calendar to take food starting in August and it has been placed on the bulletin board for you to fill in a date or dates, on which you can help. Their address is Hwy 50 just one mile west of Poncha Springs. Home phone number: If you have any questions, please speak with Olivia Harrington. And most importantly, please keep Sam & Anita Scanga in your prayers. From Ginny Biglow - I'm letting our church family know that Bob's brother, John and wife Marci have both passed away at their facility in Sun City, AZ this past week. John had succumbed to his pancreatic cancer on Friday, July 14th, while Marci peacefully left this world on Monday, July 10 th, knowing she could not endure without him. A Celebration of Life is being planned for both of them in Salida this summer. We will share the details as we learn them. Please keep their families and friends in your prayers and thoughts. With Gratitude for the Blessing of their lives in ours. Ginny & Becky Biglow This Year s Pig Roast! - Thank you to the Men s Group for once again coordinating this year s 15 th Annual Pig Roast on Friday, August 18 th. 6 RAFT GUIDE DINNER REVIEW 2017 Season 6! THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SUMMER!! Dear Raft Guide Volunteers and Supporters! Well, we did it! Year #6 is a WRAP! What an amazing season it was. Eight weeks of delicious food, heart-felt connections and the strengthening of relationships with those who come together from all over the country to our valley for this summer experience on the river! This year s dinner themes for the 8 weeks, were: Italian, Breakfast for Dinner, Mexican Feast, Thanksgiving, Soup & Salad, Chili & Cornbread, Ham/Mac n Cheese and the coveted Everything Night aka A Good Old Fashion Methodist Potluck. Throughout these 8 weeks we served over 712 meals to guides and volunteers and welcomed guides from 39 states and 2 guides from Ireland! And not unlike the guides, our volunteers (from the church and the greater community of Salida) come from all over the country to be here in Salida for the summer. Thank you to everyone for making this outreach such a rewarding experience for so many! We couldn t do it without each of you! The guides are so appreciative of all the amazing food and hard work provided by the volunteers. Remember that if you would like to be reimbursed for any expenses related to the Raft Guide Dinners please sign your receipts and bring them to Licia in the office. Thank you to everyone for all the many ways that you helped with and supported the Raft Guide Dinners this year. There are so many of you contribute delicious foods, week after week! Thank You! Many of you contribute financially each summer and please know how much that is appreciated. And to all those who support on the day of the dinners, helping with set-up, staying to help during dinner and helping with cleanup Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! If you have ideas or suggestions as to how to we might continue to improve and sustain this outreach, please be sure to write your ideas down. We will have an opportunity for volunteers to get together, at a later date, to review this past year and to plant seeds for next year. Here are few more comments that the guides have shared with us about what these dinners mean to them Thank you for taking the time to feed us every week. It s always delicious! Raft Guide Dinners are the best. Thank you & keep up the good work! Theme dinners are awesome. I Love You. Thank You. 100,000 Love Bubbles heading your direction. I love coming to church dinner! It is perfect just the way it is now. Thank you so much for doing it. Thank you to all the volunteers seen & unseen! The dinners are definitely one of our highlights of the week. 7 Sager Brown Mission Trip Salida UMC Can Participate! Olivia Harrington, one of our summer visitor members, will be going on a mission trip to Sager Brown in south Louisiana in February. The purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity for individuals to support the mission of UMCOR Disaster Relief Supplies Network. There will be 15 participants sponsored by her church, First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie, TX on this mission trip. Would you like to go with them? Ask Olivia how! One of the requirements is for each one to take a minimum of ten of the six kits Sager Brown keeps on hand for Disaster Relief. Her group is making school bags and filling them with the required school supplies. They can always take more. Kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies. They provide vital support for UMCOR s global development work and make a tangible difference in people s lives. UMCOR Sager Brown needs help restocking relief supply kits. In some countries, children don't have books or school supplies. Many have no schoolrooms; classes are held in inadequate or half-destroyed buildings, tents, or even the open air. School kits may be these children's only educational resources. School Kit Value: $11 per kit plus school bags Olivia has instructions on how to make the school kits, especially the school bags. Needed will be: 1. A few sewing machines either brought to the church or in your home. 2 Fabric Heavy-duty fabric only, such as denim, corduroy, drapery fabric, etc to make 14x16 cloth bags. No advertisements, religious, patriotic, military, or camouflage symbols, please. If you can t or don t want to sew, how about using your hands to cut fabric? Making a donation of fabric? Making a donation to purchase the supplies? Taking the donations and purchasing the supplies? Let Olivia know if you are interested in helping. Any help would be appreciated. Talk to Olivia!
