Calob Rundell It s Time To Get Ready For the past nine months I ve been a rookie firefighter with the Chaffee County Fire Protection District. In this role I ve responded to a wide a variety of incidents, from a raging structure fire to a faulty carbon monoxide alarm. But most of my time has been spent training so that I can be ready to respond to whatever emergency I get called to. In many areas of life, training is important because it gets us ready for what is to come. With my firefighter training, I m prepared and ready to hook up a hose to a hydrant or extricate someone from a crunched car. The hours spent getting ready pay off when it s go time. Whenever we encounter something that will bring change to our lives, it is helpful to have a time to get ready. The more prepared we are, the greater impact the change will have. The more time we take to study about, reflect on, or practice something, the greater prepared we will be when it is time to act. This is true of more than just practical things like learning how to hook up a fire hose to a hydrant or take a ladder off a truck. It is true in our spiritual lives as well. Greater preparation equals greater impact. Beginning with Ash Wednesday on March 1st we enter into the season of Lent. This season of preparation goes until Easter morning on Sunday April 16th. When most people think of Lent, they think of a time to voluntarily give something up that they think is bad for them, like chocolate or wasting time on the internet. The practice of fasting from something can be a helpful part of Lent, but the season is so much more than that. Lent is an intentional time to get ready for the events of Holy Week. Holy Week contains the most powerful days in the life of the church and in the life of all who follow Jesus. It is 1 because Holy Week is so powerful that we need the season of Lent. In the span of just 8 days in Holy Week, we encounter Jesus riding triumphantly into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday as the crowd shouts His praise. We see Jesus cause a violent ruckus in the temple. We hear Jesus say things that are hard for everyone to listen to. We gather with the disciples to take part in the Last Supper. We watch helplessly as Jesus is betrayed, taken to trial, and His followers are scattered. We cower as Jesus is crucified as a criminal. We are overcome with fear as we wait through the anxiety of Holy Saturday. And then we experience the power of victory with the empty tomb on Easter morning. That is A LOT in 8 days. All of Holy Week is powerful, and all of it can be life changing. So we must be prepared. During Lent, we are called to do the things that will prepare us for Holy Week. Pray. Pray a lot. Pray intentionally. Read the Gospels. Engage with the poor and the lonely around you. Fast. Give something up that is bad for you. Take something on that is good for the world. If we do some of those things (or all of them), we will be ready for the full power and impact that Holy Week brings to our lives. And we will be changed. One way to be prepared for Holy Week this year is to come be a part of worship on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. During each Sunday of Lent we will be taking a close look at the events that transpire during those 8 days: Jesus washing the disciples feet, Jesus praying in the garden, the trial of Jesus, the crucifixion, and the Last Supper. Peace, Rev. Calob Rundell pastor@salidaumc.org P.S. If you want to talk more about what you can do during Lent to get ready for Holy Week, you are most certainly welcome to be in conversation with me.

In late January, Kirk was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a plum. He recently had a 6 hour surgery at Swedish Hospital in Denver, to remove the tumor. He has made good progress through several complications. Kirk was released from Swedish Hospital on Saturday and is now back home in Salida. He will continue his therapy here moving forward. It is yet undetermined when he will be able to return to work, but his progress has been great so far! Everyone is SO grateful for all of the thoughts, prayers and concerns on his and the family's behalf. Profound gratitude from Kirk, Arika, Kuper and Kallister, as well as other friends and family! Please keep Kirk, Arika, their family and all those caring for Kirk, in your prayers. Jerry Long- Please keep Jerry Lon, deep within your prayers. Recently, Jerry Long was hospitalized in Colorado Springs at Memorial Hospital following the experience of unexplained jaundice. Pastor spent many hours with Jerry over several days and has Jerry s permission to relay the following information. After testing, it was revealed that Jerry has Stage 4 cancer throughout his chest. The jaundice was a result of a tumor obstructing the bile duct, which Jerry had a procedure to address that. Unfortunately, there is no treatment or procedure for him regarding the cancer and related tumors. It has been recommended that he receive palliative care at this time. Jerry is now home in Salida and seeing his medical professionals here. We will keep you posted as we know more about what support he wants and needs. May Jerry know the deep presence of God s love as he moves through this difficult time. If you would like to send Jerry a card, his mailing address is: PO Box 455, Salida Tom Yerkey Please keep Tom and Karen in your prayers as Tom gets stronger and stronger every day. Tom was recently hospitalized in Denver to receive a new infusion treatment for his cancer. The good news is that he has responded well to this treatment. We are hopeful that he & Karen will be able to return to Salida very soon. Thank you to all who facilitated this year s Sweetheart Breakfast. It is with great appreciation that we say thank you to those who stepped up to help with the cooking, in the unexpected absence of Jerry Long due to illness. Beautiful music was provided by Mary Sandell, accompanied by Rod Schleicher. Tax Assistance in Salida It s that time of year for all of us to get ready for the tax year We re happy to announce that the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will again be offered in Salida. We will be setting up VITA in the basement of the Methodist Church at 4th and D St. (228 4 th Street) just as we did last year, to provide free income-tax return preparation. 3 VITA will again have offices in both Salida and Buena Vista. Salida will have hours on Thursdays from 8 to 12 and again on Saturdays from 8 to 3. BV typically has hours in the afternoons on Tues and Thurs. For Salida, you can call (719) , to reserve your date and time. We estimate an hour per tax return. This year the program in Salida will continue to be run by two knowledgeable VITA volunteers who moved to Salida from Iowa in December of The couple, Randy and Linda Bergstrom, have worked with the VITA program for 15+ years and are very excited to be able to work with the IRS and continue VITA in a location to take care of community members in Salida. We also have some great returning volunteers to help and some new volunteers. The IRS created VITA so that low-to- moderate income and senior taxpayers could have free preparation and filing of income tax returns that claim the deductions, exemptions, and credits for which they are eligible. VITA was started by the IRS in 1969 and since then millions of returns have been prepared by volunteers. Volunteers have been providing this service in Salida and Buena Vista for about thirty years. The IRS provides training, and tests and certifies the volunteers providing the assistance. It s not too late to volunteer to help out for this year s VITA program, in either certified (tax preparer) or non-certified positions. If you re interested, Randy or Linda at VITASalida@gmail.com. Tax preparation includes state and federal returns, free e- filing and direct deposit of income tax refunds. In order for married couples to e-file a joint return, both spouses must be present. Taxpayers should bring all of their 2016 tax records including W-2 and 1099 forms, a copy of their 2015 tax return if possible, photo identification and social security cards for themselves, and social security cards for all dependents. If child-care expenses are to be claimed, bring the providers tax Identification number or social security number. For direct deposit of refunds, bring a check or deposit slip for the deposit account. Information on health insurance will also be required as it was last year. We look forward to seeing all of you again this year. On Sunday Evening, Feb. 26 th we celebrated the baptism of Jayla Peacock. What a beautiful evening it was!

4 Church Finance Update Hello Friends! Here is an update regarding the church s finances through January If you have any questions about these numbers, please speak with Licia Iverson, in the office or Paul Wilson, our Financial Secretary. Our next Finance Committee Mtg. will be on Tuesday, April 18 th at 1:00PM in Century Hall. Receipts & Expenses January 2017 Year to Date Receipts (Unrestricted) $ $ Apportionments - paid -$ $ Other Receipts (Restricted) NA for this chart NA for this chart Total Net Receipts $ $ Expenses - Operating $ $ Expenses Pastor Salary & Benefits, Parsonage, Staff Wages $ $ Total Expenses $ $ Net Income (Loss) -$ $ All financial figures are rounded to the nearest dollar. Category Definitions Receipts (Unrestricted): The church s receipts are like your own paycheck or pension check. Our ongoing receipts consist primarily of pledged and non-pledged offerings and loose plate offerings. Gifts given specifically to our General Fund, Faith Fund, proceeds from our fundraising efforts are also part of our receipts. These receipts are unrestricted in their use for the church. Other Receipts (Restricted): We often receive receipts specified for outreach efforts such as the Samaritan Fund, the Endowment Fund, UMCOR, Summer Raft Guide Dinner Program, building use, as well as certain fundraising efforts such as the Windows Restoration Campaign. All these receipts are restricted for the use intended and are not subject to the apportionment paid to the conference, nor do they cover monthly expenses. Apportionments: A portion (13%) of our monthly receipts (unrestricted) listed above is then paid to the Rocky Mountain Conference to support the wider mission of the United Methodist Church. This apportionment is paid each month for the receipts of the previous month. The apportionment amount paid that is reflected in our November finances was based on October receipts. Expenses - Operating: The church has many of the same expenses that we all have in our own homes. We have to pay for insurance, utilities, minor repairs, supplies as well as payroll taxes for our employees. Expenses Pastor Salary & Benefits, Parsonage, Staff Wages: The church also pays the pastor s salary and benefits, employs an office administrator, organist, choir director and a custodian. Our parsonage, the home for our pastor, has expenses such as utilities, insurance, and the mortgage payment. February numbers will be in April s Monitor. Thank you to those who make additional financial gifts to the church throughout the year. Your tax-deductible contributions greatly help our church. Your generous giving makes everything possible that goes on in the life of this church. Thank you again, for your generous and faithful financial support. United Methodist Foundation Presents Will-Power Program for Salida FUMC This month Salida FUMC, in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain United Methodist Foundation, will conduct a program at our Church to emphasize the importance of having a will and to assist members in making or updating their wills. Recently our church was the recipient of a generous bequest from a member in her will. It has enabled us to meet needs of our church that needed to be addressed without putting a strain on our finances. Beginning February 19 information was provided regarding the importance of wills and estate planning. It is estimated that 70% of Americans have no will. Without one, the state may be the one to decide what happens to your estate, not your family. You will be given an opportunity to fill out a brief, anonymous Wills Information Survey and place it, unsigned, in the collection plate. Additional information will be given on subsequent Sundays and the program will conclude with a Wills Workshop on March 12, following our worship, to be conducted by a representative from the Foundation and Randy Bergstrom, a tax attorney with estate planning experience.

6 Remember to turn your clocks FORWARD 1 hour on Saturday night March 11 th. Daylight Savings time begins on Sunday, March 12 th. From Margaret Gillikin, the Trinity District Superintendent Dear Friends, TRINITY Views As we begin Lent this March, I invite you to join me in taking Jesus seriously when he invites us to "Come to me, all you who are heavy laden and I will give you rest." The following is a prayer practice I use regularly to release my burdens to God. The freedom and empowerment this grants me and others who use this method are significant. I hope you will give it a try, either working with a prayer partner - with one person asking the questions and the other person answering, then trading... or by yourself with a journal, talking out loud (to your plants? the dog?) or in silence. Here are the questions for reflection to guide a "Clearing". 1. How are you feeling a loss of power, freedom or selfcontrol? Or, what are you struggling with presently / how are you suffering? (Ex: My sister is driving me nuts.) 2. What's everything you're telling yourself / feeling about this? (Ex: She's self-centered, takes advantage of me, doesn't care about my needs, I feel judged and unaccepted.) 3. What kind of person says these kinds of things? (Ex: Someone with hurt feelings, who's tired of a situation that never seems to improve.) 4. What are the impacts on you when you're in this space? (Ex: I act like Eeyore... all depressed and moody, going off by myself to eat "thistles" (too much crunchy stuff that lets me chew on what's bugging me) thinking no one loves me. I also lose sleep and am generally irritable.) 5. What are the impacts on others? (Ex: By being out of communication with my sister and others, people miss me and the gifts of relationship we have. I m being wary of one person, put up defenses against others and I push away those I most want to be close to.) 6. Do you take responsibility for these words, attitudes and behaviors? (Ex: Yes. I know I'm not capable of changing my sister or her behavior, but I am responsible for myself, i.e., I am able to respond in a different, more life-giving way.) 7. What is there to give up? What can you let go of & allow Jesus to carry for you? (Ex: I give up insisting that my sister act the way I do. I let go of expecting mutuality, just because that's what I'd prefer. I release judging her. I let go of being impatient with myself for getting tripped up by this again.) 8. Is there anything God wants you to give up? Pray in silence to listen for something to be revealed. (Ex: I give up my ego of feeling better than her.) 9. Assess if you're now feeling "clear" and unburdened. Generally, there is a sense of peace, nothing else comes to mind, or you may even feel light hearted and begin to have playful answers accompanied by laughter. If you haven't experienced a shift, go back to earlier steps. Once clear, move on Believing that we humans are created in the Divine image & remembering that God creates through the power of the Word, I believe that our words are powerful. Thus, the last question is, what possibility do you want to create today? (Ex: The possibility I am creating for myself and my life is... accepting myself and others for how we are... being love... walking in step with Christ... trusting & believing in miracles... peace & serenity... hope & healing.) The possibilities are truly endless! One small detail... it is important to phrase your answers in questions 7 & 8 in active voice to make them more powerful. Instead of saying "I need to or want to" instead say, "I let go... I give up... I release." You may even want to make a letting go gesture with your hands as you speak or imagine placing that attitude or behavior directly into God's hands. Whatever spiritual disciplines you choose to practice during these 40 days of preparation, I pray that they will lead you closer to the heart of God and that the peace of Christ which passes understanding blesses you throughout the Lenten season. Blessings on the journey, 6
