1 May 2018 First United Methodist Church of Salida Love, Live, Give As You Have Received 4 th & D Streets (P.O. Box 945) Salida, CO (719) Ministers: Everyone; Pastor: Calob Rundell (O), (C); Office Administrator: Licia Iverson; Organist: Rod Schleicher; Choir Director: Mary Sandell Co-Lay Leaders: Burrell & Sherry Welton: Burrell , Sherry ; C0-Church Council Chair: Elaine Adams and Eduardo Brummel ; Treasurer: Randy Bergstrom ; Financial Secretary: Paul Wilson Pastor s pastor@salidaumc.org Church website: Church office@salidaumc.org Pastor s Ponderings You Are The Future Of The Church One of the great pop-culture franchises of the 80s and 90s was Back To The Future. In the three Back To The Future movies, the timeless characters of Marty McFly and Doc Brown use a time machine (built around the most iconic car ever, The DeLorean) to travel between 1985, 1955, 1885, and If you haven t seen the trilogy of movies in a while, it is well worth your time to view them again. It is especially interesting to see how the film makers of 1985 envisioned the world of In Back To The Future II, we see the year 2015 that has flying personal hover boards, shoes that lace themselves, and flying cars. According to the writers of the film, 2015 was going to be a great time to be alive. So 2015 came and went. And we don t have flying cars. And we don t have hover boards. And I m still tying my own shoes, unfortunately. Often when we think about the current state of things, we lament what hasn t come into existence. We bemoan that our lives aren t what we thought they were going to be where we were younger. We regret what we didn t do that we should have, and we regret what we did that we shouldn t have. We do this in our own personal lives, and we do it in the life of the church. We may look around on a Sunday morning during worship and not see as many people as we would want to see. We may lament the ways in which we thought the church was going to grow and change as compared to what has actually happened. Just as I can complain about how someone was supposed to get around to inventing hover boards by 2015, we can bemoan that no one ever got around to making the church what it s supposed to be. But my friends, we are making the future of the church right now. You are the future of the church. The church of 2025 and 2035 is being created and built as you re reading this. God s Holy Spirit is at work right now doing things that will bear fruit in the future, and you are called to be a part of it. So, now is the time. Now is the time to build those relationships with your friends, neighbors and acquaintances that will be the future of the church in the years to come. Now is the time to make those invitations. Invite people to worship. Invite people to the raft guide dinners. Invite people to connect with you, your faith, and your church. I can t guarantee what the future of the church will look like, and I don t want to nurture any false hopes about hover boards. But I do have faith that God has work for the church to do, now and far into the future. And I do have faith that we are called to be active partners in the future God is working on. Peace, Rev. Calob Rundell pastor@salidaumc.org office; cell 1

4 Trinity Views A Message from Our District Superintendent: Margaret Gillikin Dear Friends, As you may already know, my responsibilities will be increasing as of July 1 st. I will be superintending the churches of North East Colorado, adding two more Circuits and eighteen Churches to our network of connections. Wow!!! Additionally, as I conclude my fourth year as your Superintendent, it is Disciplinary that I take sabbatical time this summer. So, from June 16 th through September 9 th I will be on leave, resting, renewing and retreating. I have some trips planned, including a Christian festival (Wild Goose) in North Carolina that I have yearned to attend for years and a trip-of-a-lifetime adventure of two weeks to Scandinavia with my mother. But mostly I will be HOME, driving as little as possible, and seeking deep connection with God in ways that bring me joy primarily painting and writing. Yay!!! Put these two things together and you may very well be asking HOW is this going to work??? Honestly, I m not sure. I will be spending time with NE Colorado churches at the end of May so that we can begin relationship-building prior to my leave. When I return in the fall, I will be seeking to be in worship with every church that has a new pastor, as has been my practice. We are anticipating that there will be an advertised hiring process of the Congregational Resource Minister (open to clergy and laity) in the fall, with that half-time person beginning work in the expanded territory on January 1, Finally, I further anticipate that church conferences this fall will again be conducted with churches gathering together in Circuits. I realize that there are MANY details to work out and communicate beyond these broad strokes. I will be communicating with the people directly involved as more plans fall into place. What I AM confident of, beloved, is that through the grace of God, ALL things are possible including the seemingly unfeasible. Through partnership with and fueling by the Holy Spirit, workability CAN be achieved particularly when we hold loosely our expectations of what the future will actually look like. Please be in prayer with me for our new neighbors and for ways in which we may all experience together the abundant LIFE that is Christ s good promise to us. Blessings on the Journey from your District Superintendent, ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ It s Really Easy! Many reasons to buy reloadable Safeway Cards 1. 5% of all purchases are given to the SUMC 2. 5 Learn More About Kairos! Since 2016, there has been a lot of buzz around the church about an experience called Kairos. What is Kairos? Kairos is a prison ministry that has recently started at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex in here Chaffee County. The word Kairos is Greek term that means the opportune or appointed time for something. The Kairos experience facilitates an intentional time where those that are incarcerated can experience the grace and calling of Jesus. To learn more about Kairos, you can contact Pastor Calob, Lisa Hilbig, Cynthia and David Hearn, or Burrell Welton. And, there are three main ways you can support the ministry of Kairos here in Chaffee County: 1. Volunteer! You can volunteer to be a part of a team that puts on an entire weekend of Kairos inside the prison. It is a life changing experience. Kairos events are held the first weekends of May and October each year. 2. By financial support. Each weekend costs $12,000 to put on. Checks may be made out to Kairos of Colorado and mailed to Kairos Prison Ministries, PO Box 302, Salida, By signing the colored prayer strips available in Century Hall with your first name only and city. By doing this you commit to praying for Kairos. The names are then made into a Prayer Chain that is presented to the participants during a Kairos weekend and is a powerful reminder that they are not forgotten while they are incarcerated. REGISTER NOW FOR PART 1 ON MAY 4 TH AND PART 2 ON MAY 17 & 18 Any Questions, Please ask Calob returning to Salida this summer and helping with the dinners! As was true in previous years, it was heartwarming to revisit the history of this outreach and our intention. We shared what the last 6 years of dinners has meant to, not only us, but most especially to the guides who attend and honoring the relationships that are formed and strengthened each year. With new volunteers in attendance, it was good to share our history and engage them in creating what this year will have to offer. Each year we ask the guides for written feedback about their experience of the dinners. We invite them to make suggestions or share ideas of how we can continue to improve and enrich this community outreach. Here is just a sampling of the many, many comments they have shared. Our 2018 Raft Guide Dinner season is just around the corner! The first Raft Guide Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 th at 7:00pm! RAFT GUIDE DINNERS 2018 SEASON 7! We held an initial Raft Guide Dinner planning meeting on Sunday, April 29 th after worship, in the church basement and it was well attended. We also heard from some of our summer families, who couldn t attend the meeting, but nevertheless, expressed their excitement about 7 Thank you for taking the time to feed us every week. It s always delicious! Raft Guide Dinners are the best. Thank you & keep up the good work! Theme dinners are awesome. I Love You. Thank You. 100,000 Love Bubbles heading your direction. I love coming to church dinner! It is a great thing to look forward to every week, even if I don t actually make it. Thanks for everything. May the force be with you! We love the Raft Guide Dinners. It is perfect just the way it is now. Thank you so much for doing it. Thank you to all the volunteers seen & unseen! The dinners are definitely one of our highlights of the week. Thank you so much for all the hard work you guys put into providing dinners for our raft guides. You guys are awesome. Best part of my week You all have been truly lovely. It is a blessing to have shared the summer with you. Your food is as comforting as your hearts and that is how you show people Jesus Love. The committee decided that since July 4 th falls on a Wednesday, we will NOT hold a dinner on this night. So, for this summer we will provide 7 weeks of dinners instead of 8! The dinner poster will clearly communicate that. The posters are scheduled to be delivered to the Rafting Companies during the week of May 22 nd. More information will be coming in the weeks ahead about what the needs are and how you can plug in to help. Thank you in advance for the many ways you support this amazing summer outreach program with your time, delicious foods, and financial contributions. With your help it will be another amazing summer! See you at the dinners!

8 Eduardisms Lessons From the Lilies By: Eduardo Brummel During the Easter service, one of the lilies was knocked over, spilling some its potting soil onto the tile in front of the Communion rail. Fairly quickly, a member of the congregation uprighted the lily, and replaced some of the spilt soil. A bit later, someone else arrived with a whiskbroom and dustpan, sweeping what was left. However, Calob had already inadvertently kicked some of the dirt into the carpet on either side of the titled area. And during Communion, those who were serving the Elements were still attempting to avoid the lingering mess. So, while there was the shock and awkwardness when the lily tumped over, the service continued. Communion carried on. Sistren and brethren, not even worship on a high holy day will be impeded by your messing up, your sinning. And to be quite sure, nothing you do will fracture your communion with God. Yes, you may not realize the sin you ve committed, when it happens. And you may, indeed, have to rely on others to rectify what you ve done. Any and all of this (and, perhaps, even more) may be true; yet it s all okay. Of course God can handle whatever you do; but, then, so can your congregation. You are not necessarily only left to your own devices to correct whatever wrongs you commit. Flesh and blood human help is always available. My siblings, in so, so, many, many ways, you are never alone, for Lo, we are with you, until the end of the days. (Mark your calendars NOW!)
