There is no commandment greater than these. (Mark 12:30-31) Much of the southern portion of our country and the Caribbean has been ravaged by recent storms and hurricanes the likes of which haven t been experienced in many years. The Evangelical Lutheran Church website offers the below insight how we too can aid those affected by the devastation. Please thoughtfully consider how you can be part of this mission, showing our love of God and neighbor by our actions: ricane Harvey, one of the most catastrophic storms to hit the country in more than a decade. Lutheran Disaster Response s affiliate is actively present, collaborating with community leaders and officials to initiate the proper responses, particularly the long-term recovery efforts. Together, we have a strong history of working with disasters in the Gulf Coast area. Recovery efforts are expected to take years, and Lutheran Disaster Response will be there to accompany those affected through every phase of this disaster. We invite you to stand by our neighbors on the Gulf Coast during this time. Your gifts ensure that our church will be able to provide help and hope for those left homeless or otherwise affected by this disaster for years to come. Gifts to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for "Hurricane Response United States" will be used entirely (100 percent) Please stand by our neighbors as we begin the long road to recovering from Hurfor this disaster until the response is complete. 7 Tr a n s i t i o n Ta s k F o r c e U p d a t e Luther Sings On Sunday Sept. 24 th we held our third Town Hall Meeting; the focus of this meeting was to gather information from members and friends about Trinity s FUTURE and send that information to the church council and call committee as we move forward. Thank you, Pastor Alan, for your guidance and experience as we move through this transition phase of life here at Trinity. We have gathered a lot of data. First we identified where our members live in relation to 8 th and Buchanan. We hosted our first town hall meeting during which we reflected on our past, recalling what significant memories we have here at Trinity, listing those by decade. The second town hall meeting looked at where are we today; using SWOT Analysis in which we asked what you see as Trinity s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. On August 6 th we invited several of our neighbors who care about the Historic Old Town Neighborhood to share their observations and thoughts about what they see daily in the neighborhood where we worship. The third Town Hall meeting was held September 24 th and we listened to you and heard what traits you would like to see in our next called leader and where you see Trinity in the future. Next step: the task force will meet with council on October 10 th and present our recommendations for consideration. It is up to ALL OF US to determine what Trinity s future will be and decide what characteristics we want to see in our next pastor. Will he/she be full time or part time, bivocational? Do we want someone to focus on leading us to serve the community or do we want to stay the same and find someone who provides our basic needs? The FUTURE of Trinity lies in OUR hands. We are at a pivotal time once again and will need to decide: Do we stay the course as long as we can, nurturing our members or do we find the energy and desire for a CHANGE by serving others in our neighbor- hood, taking a huge leap of faith as our forefathers before us have done, such as when we switched from speaking Swedish to English and rebuilding during the depression era. This is NOT the first time Trinity has been challenged nor will it be our last. God Is At Work at Trinity, it is our Joy to do God s Work with Our Hands! The work being done now will lead us toward the next step as the Call Committee forms. We Need Your Support and Most of all Your PRAYERS! Thank you for your support and interest! Trinity s Transitional Task Force: Dean McGinnis (co-chair), Duane Pomeroy (cochair), Marcy Carlson, Loni Reece, Cindy McGinnis, Pam Kobbeman, Chuck Sodergren and Pastor Alan Saatkamp. Together in Community Living with Christ Caring for Neighbors This month we finally sing A Mighty Fortress is our God, a favorite among Lutherans, and people of all faiths. This famous hymn was written by Luther in 1529 and is often referred to as the Battle Hymn of the Reformation. Some say Ein Feste Burg is the greatest hymn of the greatest man of the greatest period of German history. We will sing this GREAT hymn October 29 when we celebrate the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. Luther Says I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen. Martin Luther 5

8 T r i n i t y E v a n g e l i c a l L u t h e r a n C h u r c h WELC A Priscilla Circle Priscilla Circle will meet for Bible study Wednesday, October 18, 1:00 p.m. in Trinity Library. At that time we will look at the Second Session on the Apostles' Creed, "I Believe in Jesus Christ". The studies on the Apostles' Creed are in observance of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Come join us for a good discussion of this valuable tool which centers on our faith. Trinity Women were represented at the September 9th Cluster meeting held at Grace Lutheran, Osage City, by Dorothy Strom and Helen Laughlin. Speaker of the day was Kathy Lincoln, President of ECAT (Ecumenical Christian Action Team) serving the needy in Osage City and surrounding area. The tangible offering AND one-half of the monetary offering was given to ECAT (the other half was given to Central States Women). Total offering for the day was $243. Inspiring reports about the recent National Gathering in Minneapolis were presented; 3400 participants had gathered for this event! IT WAS A GOOD DAY! We will be sending Health Care Kits and blankets, (made by quilters) to Lutheran World Relief on October 3. You may not have time to add to this shipment, but we'll continue the project for next year! LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF Personal Care Kits items are: One bath towel (dark color), two bars soap (bath size), one tooth brush, one sturdy comb, one nail clipper. Bring to Quilting Room or office. THANK YOU! Trinity Lutheran Church TOP 5 S.W.O.T. Analysis Trends in 2017 On the next page, please see the top five trends in each of the categories (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) identified in the SWOT analysis. These trends serve to identify where Trinity is today. As we move forward and discern where God is calling us, we will use these items to help US decide the FUTURE of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. The top 5 trends in each area were identified after reviewing all the comments received and grouping similar responses. This information will lead us in the process of developing Trinity s site profile and forming the Call Committee in our search for our next Pastor. (1) Strengths areas where we are strong. (2) Weaknesses areas where we need to improve. Opportunities and Threats, deal with future realities: (3) Opportunities areas we can move into to develop. (4) Threats areas that will hinder our progress. Thank You! Transitional Task Force Team: Marcy Carlson, Chuck Sodergren, Duane Pomeroy, Loni Reece, Cindy McGinnis, Pam Kobbeman, Dean McGinnis and Pastor Alan Saatkamp. And a special thanks to Brett Henry for helping us with the S.W.O.T. analysis process.
