First Sunday of Advent Upcoming Activities Dec. 2 St. Timothy Christmas Party in the Social Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per adult and kids come free. Tickets will be available at the door. Members of St. Timothy Active Youth and Confirmation students will decorate the church and churchyard for Advent from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A pizza lunch will be provided. Monthly collection for a mission in Northern India; envelopes are in the pews, or ask an usher. Dec. 3 Practices begin at 1 p.m. for religious education students Christmas pageant. Practices also are scheduled on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. Attendance at practice is mandatory for those youth participating in this dramatic proclamation of the Christmas gospel. 3 Page 3 First Sunday of Advent b{a à{tà léâ ãéâäw àxtü à{x {xtäxçá ÉÑxÇ tçw véåx wéãç exäa cxàxü YxÜÇtÇwxá? áyå Advent means coming. We know the one who is about to come: it is Christ the Savior. Why is there a need for Christ to come? For whose sake is He coming? Will His coming be obscure or obvious? Will all find Him? By providing a profound theological insight regarding His coming, the prophet Isaiah sets a tone for the season of Advent. In the time of Isaiah, the plight of sinful humanity had reached its lowest ebb, and the darkness of rebellion had engulfed humanity, leaving it devoid of wonder and grace. All had sinned and therefore had fallen short of the glory of God. Isaiah plead with God on behalf of the people, Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your inheritance. Oh, that You would tear the heavens open and come down at Your presence the mountains would melt. Therefore, let our prayer for Advent be, God of hosts, bring us back, let Your face shine on us and we shall be saved. Isaiah provides theological, natural as well as existential cases for his plea to God to return to save mankind. Since our existence is from God, only God can remedy our state. It is imperative to acknowledge the author of life and seek Him always: You, Lord, Yourself are our Father, our Redeemer we the clay, You the potter, we are all the work of Your hand. Remedy for our sins cannot be found in empirical things or among man, but only in God. Hence, it was necessary for the Savior to tear the heavens open and come down. It is equally important therefore for humans to open their hearts and receive divine mercy and grace. Human society should abandon its sinful ways, false practices and idol worship and seek the Lord who has come to dwell in humanity s midst. Our prayer should be: O Lord, rouse up Your might; O Lord, come to our help. Why did God tear the heavens open? St. John provides us with divine insight: For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. The condition of humankind was so precarious, its trajectory bound for total damnation, that there seemed to be no hope: No one invoked Your name or roused himself to catch hold of You. Indeed, our hope must be only in the Lord, for no material thing nor human can provide us a lasting hope of everlasting happiness. Prophet Isaiah reflects this mystery and confesses, Lord, you are our Father; we the clay, You the potter. We are all the work of Your hand. For that reason, God tore the heavens open and came down to lift humanity to His bosom. Is the prophet Isaiah s angst about the human condition applicable to our time? In fact, the situation today is worse than ever before. Contemporary society abhors the sovereignty of God. The divine laws are abused and derided. Those who strive to live by the law of the Lord are either looked down upon or persecuted. Contemporary society has digressed from nature and its Creator on all counts. The only hope humans have is to turn to the Messiah with open hearts and minds, with humility and faith. Advent is the season of hope for the Messiah is coming to redeem His people. Indeed, He tears the heavens open so He can come down to dwell in our midst, to offer mercy and forgiveness, salvation and hope, love and peace. Let Advent be a time of earnest preparation to meet the one coming down from heaven our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Please call the rectory. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Baptism is a celebration of our Christian community. Parents should be registered members of the parish. A baptismal preparation class is required and is held every 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory basement. Please call the rectory at least two months before the celebration to make the arrangements. Generally, Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 12:00 p.m. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Couples should contact a priest at least four months before the celebration. A program of marriage preparation is required. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please contact the parish priest anytime. FUNERAL MASS: In case of death, call the rectory first to schedule a Funeral Mass. MINISTERS OF CARE can bring Holy Communion to the sick or homebound. Please call the rectory.
