Gratitude and Connections! Seattle, and across oceans to my original homelands of Denmark and Norway. I traced my family roots all the way to Vikings in the 1200s (!), and traced the history of Christianity as it came to Scandinavia in the Welcome home! It s good to be back. 1000s. Viking kings were buried on the land Sometimes you don t even know how good it behind my cousins home! is to be home until you ve been gone. Thank you GOD for the time, the opportunity and the beauty of creation. Thank you GOD of abundance and glory, for family and faith and transportation; for foods that changed with the locations I found myself in. For sunshine and rain, for boats and seas. Everyday, and in every situation there was time and space in my heart and soul to be filled with gratitude. That is one of the things that I want to continue to take with me into all of my next steps. Connections is another theme which I have come to believe in even more. Our human souls need connections with others to thrive. We are in danger of losing this when we, or our society, places so much value on independence and individualism. I made and found connections with people all across the country - from New York to Until this trip I thought I was the first Pastor in our family. It turns out however, that there were Prestens (Priests, Pastors) in my family in the 1600s in Norway. Jaasund itself (the town my grandparents came from and where most of the family still live) was the place in the 1700s set aside for widows of pastors to live. My cousin Ase s address is 14 Prestaskjersveien. We had a Family Jubilee in Jaasund that brought 60 people together (see the picture on the top of the page). Continued on next page

We really can use a lot of paper for the school kits, soap for the baby care kits and health kits, also those large bath towels. God's Work Our Hands Sunday September 20th!!! ELC is partnering with On September 20th, after our worship services we will be participating in the God's Work Our Hands Sunday. We invite you to put on your yellow T-shirt that says this loudly and proudly and join in one of the two options to serve on this Sunday. One opportunity is to help serve one of our community partners, Compass Health. At the present time we do not have a definitive project but Compass is thinking it might be some painting or yard-work at their facility in Everett (more details to come on this project as soon as we know about them). Or if manual labor like this is not your strong suit, throw on the yellow shirt and assist in the 1 Green Planet operation that will also happen that Sunday. Simply come to the parking lot and meet and greet our neighbors as they drop off their recyclables, get to know them, and even offer to help them unload some of the items they are dropping off. What a great opportunity to get to know our community members, 5 too!!

6 ELC Summer Highlights 11th Annual Edmonds Lutheran Golf Tournament July 19, 2015 Learning Center News pin award by Mateo Kuo, David Ruud s eightyear-old grandson, the youngest player in the tournament. The mixture of church members and friends of the congregation enjoyed the fellowship. Feel free to invite your family and friends to the event next summer. Mateo Kuo, David Ruud s grandson. It was a hot sunny afternoon on July 19, 2015, as thirty-six golfers played in the Eleventh Annual Edmonds Lutheran Golf Tournament at the Lynnwood Municipal Golf Course. Golfers of all skill levels played in this fun event. The team of Milt Anderson, Kevin Isaac, Brad Nelson and Al Rad were the winners in the best ball format with a net score of 61. Par for the Lynnwood Golf Course is 65. The team of Nick Hansen, Hanna Petterson, Kirk Petterson and Thad Stanley finished second with a score of 62. The third place winners with a score of 65 were a team of Sharon Maril, Grant McCallum, John McCallum and Malcolm McCallum. The closest to the pin competition winners were Mateo Kuo, Grant McCallum, Cherste Nilde and Nick Hansen. All winners received golf balls and/ or coffee cards. One highlight of the day was the closest to the Special thanks to Diane McCallum for providing cookies and handling registration. Malcolm McCallum Golf Tournament Chairperson Goal Setting Task Force Update We are nearing the end of our Goal Setting project we have been working over the last five months. To recap, we began with multiple cottage meetings where we asked the congregation members to explore their fears, hopes and dreams for ELC. Then we had an all congregational brunch where we took some of the themes that came from the cottage meetings and invited you all to brainstorm what ideas you would support and participate in to help make these hopes become a reality. Then we began with community interviews asking our community members and leaders what are the struggles and needs of our community. Now we have a great deal of data and information that this September the task force and council will look at and dig through to set some new goals for our congregation as we move into the future. The plan is to have these goals set in October and be able to talk through the data gathered and the new goals so we can begin the exciting and fun work of living into the future of ELC. Keep an eye out for forums and meetings to come in October to learn what we found from this process and what conclusions we have reached. Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 is familiar to us all, reminding us there is a time for everything. As a new school year begins in September, we say good-bye to Ashlyn, Sophie, Nicholas, Yoseph and Zoe. God has provided us with children to fill not only their spots, but four enrolled families are expecting their second child. Congratulations to soon to be big brothers, sisters and parents of McKenna, Rowan, Harley and Jaxon. Ecclesiastes not only mentions a season for everything, but that everything is meaningless 37 times. I realize that all my worldly pleasures are temporary and that I only get a sense of meaning and happiness when I focus on an eternal God, not my temporary pleasures. In verse 12 we are told, I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. Additional thanks to Dave Nelson for designing our shed sign. Want to thank the following people for remembering the Learning Center with donated food: Bob Snyder, Les Lerslake, Mimi Lee, Barb Elias and Rozella Kleven. Also thank you to Bob Ramborger for checking out our air conditioner unit; Karen Newsome for donated garbage bags; and Diane McCallum for construction paper & cart. Finally, thank you to Pastor Tim for demonstrating his golf swings to the preschool as part of their education on sports. Like always, we appreciate kitchen garbage bags, 5 ounce cups, large non-latex gloves and batteries. In August the Learning Center had our surprise visit from the Washington State Early Achiever s evaluation team. We will receive our rating in October, and no matter how they rate us, I am sure God s rating is more important. Overlooked in the official rating is the $1800 in tuition assistance and the fantastic staff, board, volunteers and church members that truly care about the quality of this outreach mission. So as we start a new school year and look at what is meaningful, I think it is appropriate to conclude with the last 2 verses, 13 & 14, of Ecclesiastes from the New Living Translation. That's the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone's duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. The Learning Center is blessed by many people doing good! Thank you to our following kids parents: Isaiah for watermelon; Dion for baby food; Troylius for God Bless you all - Amelia Nossum, Director toys; Joshua for file folders. A very special BOOK CLUB - Please join ELC s book club! Its a thank you to Mary Parker and all who lot of fun and is filled with engaging conversation! contributed to Dick s memorial! The this month we will be meeting at the Neidhardts on Learning Center now has a shed for our Tuesday, September 1st at 7:30 pm. preschool outside toys.
