1 Saint Paul Lutheran Church and School The Sword January W Keady Ct., Roseburg, OR Why do we need a creed? The word creed comes from the Latin word credo which means: I believe. Creeds not only state what we believe but also what we do not believe. The first Christian creed was simply confessing Jesus is Lord (see 1 Cor. 12:3; Rom. 12:9; Phil. 2:11; 1 Cor. 15:3-7). This was a big deal in the 1 st century because Roman rulers were called Lord. To call Jesus Lord was a bold confession of faith since persecution came along with it. In the 2 nd century, the Apostle s Creed was formulated against false teachings such as Gnosticism (Jesus was not really human since all matter is evil), Docetism (Jesus only seemed to suffer on the cross but did not really), and Adoptionism (Jesus became the Son of God at his baptism, but was not divine prior to this). The truth needed to be publically stated. In the 4 th century, the divinity of the Son was challenged by a pastor named Arius who taught that Jesus was not God but only a creature. Also, the divinity of the Holy Spirit was also challenged by Eunomius and Macedonius. The Nicene Creed was formulated to affirm the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all divine, yet there is only one God. Today, it is important that we understand the Nicene Creed because false teachers such as Jehovah s Witnesses and Mormons are repeating the same false teachings as Arius. Why does it matter if you confess the creed in worship? It matters because it connects you with the universal Christian Church in heaven and on earth. This is what believers have confessed for thousands of years! We are not a part of a new movement, but an old one. Also, in a day and age where truth is relative, how cool is it to courageously state what we believe? If you forgot to bring your sock in December you may give the collected money to a LWML member on Sunday News Barbara Campbell, President I hope your Christmas celebrations were blessed with the joy and peace of the Christ Child. Thank you to everyone who participated in our Mite Sox ingathering and especially to all those who stopped by our Mite BOX table and picked up one or TWO to collect change in for this coming year. We will strive to make the Large Mite Box available from time to time for you to bring your small Mite Boxes and empty them into it. A big event coming up in January will be a Bunko Tea for the ladies of the congregation. Date has been set for January 24 mid-afternoon. This event will be a fundraiser for missions. Tickets will be available for $5.00. Thrivent Action Team monies will help provide hors d oeuvres and beverages. Ladies, even if you ve never played Bunko, you ll catch on in 5 minutes; it s a very simple dice game. Come join us for fun, fellowship and food. Save the date: JANUARY 24. They include Pat Churchill, Margie Derr, Pastor Len Galster as well as Don and Betty Kitzman. We also have Carol Anderson at Curry Manor. Carolee Fourtner and Bette Hand are at the Manor House. Prayer shawls Just a reminder, we have prayer shawls available to give to friends, family and those in need. Our prayer shawls were created by hand and stitched with prayers of love, hope, comfort and joy. The shawls are a gift, a hug from God. We pray that the shawl will bring blessings of warmth and the knowledge that they are loved. 5 St. Paul Lutheran Church - Multi-Aged Bible Class A class that reads and discusses different sections of the Bible together. Meets Sundays and 9:00 AM, all year long in the Library at St. Paul Lutheran School s building. Single and Couples (childcare available) A group open to all that discusses the sermon text from Sunday in more detail and how to approach application in their own lives. Meets the 1 st Friday of each month at 6pm for a potluck and time in the word at the Timothy House or Pastor Andrew s home. Men s Multi-Age McMennamins Group A group that discusses Scripture based books that are related to the meaning and application of the Bible in one s life. Women s Multi-Age Garden Valley Group, Women of God s word growing in the knowledge of God. Open to all women. Currently reading through The Vine Speaks. Winchester (North Roseburg) Group Through our weekly Bible study, we will be drawn closer to God; through fellowship, we will be a blessing to one another; by giving of our time and talents, we will make a difference to others in our community. LWML (Lutheran Women s Missionary League) The mission of the (LWML) is to assist each women of The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world Meets the 1 st Thursday of the Month in the Timothy House. Contact Barb for time. Teens Group A group of teenagers seeking fellowship and relevant application of the Bible in their lives. Children s Church Classes for children ages 4-8 to learn about the Bible. Sundays during the first half of the service. Meets in the educational wing just past the elevator. Confirmation A group open to 6 th - 8 th grade students who want to learn the major doctrines of the Christian faith in preparation for receiving their first communion.
