1 Wayne Pr esbyterian C hurch WAYNEWS Volume VII, Issue XII December 2017 Advent, like its cousin Lent, is a season for prayer and reformation of our hearts. Since it comes at wintertime, fire is a fitting sign to help us celebrate Advent. If Christ is to come more fully into our lives this Christmas, if God is to become really incarnate for us, then fire will have to be present in our prayer. Our worship and devotion will have to stoke the kind of fire in our souls that can truly change our hearts. Ours is a great responsibility not to waste this Advent time. Edward Hays, A Pilgrim s Almanac It is so easy to waste the opportunity of Advent because of our impatience and inability to wait. Someone once said, You usually have to wait for that which is worth waiting for. This seems most true during Advent/Christmas. This season we confront the false gods and saviors that we have settled for and recommit ourselves to be still and wait for the Lord. The beauty of this season is while we are waiting, our lives are not empty. The One we are waiting for holds us in the peace and joy promised in the fullness of Christ yet to come. The following prayer expresses the now and not yet Spirit that holds us during this season of peaceful waiting. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, O Promised One: Once again we come to this time of Advent and await Your presence. Give us patience to seek the meaning of these busy days. Give us the courage to wait in times of pain and trouble. Give us the compassion to wait for one another. Give us the faith to wait for the Messiah when we are threatened by the Herods of the world. Give us the hope to wait for the Savior even when we cannot hear the angels singing. Give us love that does not wait when we meet Christ in our neighbor.
