1 Saint Paul Lutheran Church and School The Sword July W Keady Court, Roseburg, OR Irene Hughes and Sondra Blakely Left this world to be with the Lord June 26 th Rachel Clippard Jesus said: Before Abraham was, I AM (John 8:58). When He said this, He knew He was echoing the Divine Name for God in Exodus 3:14. God declared to Moses His Divine Name when He said: I AM WHO I AM. In the Gospel of John, Jesus made eight I AM claims ranging from Himself as the Living Water, to Him being the Resurrection and the Life. In our next sermons series, we will apply to our hearts and minds the I AM claims of Jesus in the Gospel of John. As you get to know the Son of God you will be conformed into His image. You will become what you behold. Jesus is God s beloved Son in whom He is well pleased (Luke 3:22). When this is the daily cry of our hearts and we make a big deal out of the Son we will be able to live by faith and handle all of life s challenges. The more we live by faith the more we give all our concerns, burdens, and anxieties to the exalted Son of God. When we make much of the Son at our church, people are drawn to Him, lives are changed, marriages are healed, addictions are set free, and sins are forgiven. David Weir is going to preach more this summer. Please pray for him. He needs your prayers and support as he takes on a greater load. How thankful should we be that God saved Him and brought Him into His kingdom and gifted Him with knowledge and preaching? Also, I appeal to you to be spiritually aware this summer. Please pray against complacency, apathy, making excuses for not growing spiritually, hardness of heart, pride, and lust in our church. Instead, pray that our church would be filled with the Spirit, walking in love, filled with kindness, respect, and goodness, and desiring to hear the Word of God preached and be in unity and peace with all the saints. 2 LWML News Barbara Campbell, President The GRACE RACE What a wonderful time we had at our Oregon District LWML convention June 3-5. The speakers, Beth Zier, Greg Finke and Debbie Larson, were inspirational, Bible studies by Pastors Beck and Bohren were motivating, entertainment with Lauren James, Sara Pike & M.C. Priscilla Grieg was captivating and the food was delicious. Especially appreciated was the extra time to visit with our sisters in Christ between sessions. We truly enjoyed visits from Martin & Katie Luther, who helped us find the way to AL-Bur-Kurkee and the 75th anniversary celebration of our LWML. They were most delightful. Moving For Mites saw a number of women out walking the streets of Eugene early Saturday morning, while some of us just turned over a few more times in bed. The $600+ was added to the first convention offering designated for our Oregon LWML District Mission Goal. The 2 nd & 3 rd offerings will go to Quiet Waters Outreach and the Canyon Crisis and Resource Center. We can t say enough about all the wonderful women who helped put together this biennium s convention. A harder working group couldn t be found, including our own women and especially Vicky Kuester who made all the delightful shoe name tags, place cards and shoe benedictions placed in the convention bags; Barb Egli & Taryn Stribling who kept track of all 208 registrations in addition to along with Vicky, Fran Mueller & Lorraine Russell all helped man the registration tables. This was truly a wonderful opportunity to Serve the Lord with Gladness. -Barb Campbell for St. Paul LWML. LWML will not be meeting during the summer months. Lynn Mathweg, Director Our Care Ministry is once again changing. Vivian Fisher will be moving to Oshkosh, WI to be closer to family. Please keep her in your prayers as she travels and transitions to her new home. At the same time we have two former members who have been called home to be with the Lord. Both Irene Hughes and Sondra Blakely were women of faith. We lift their families up in prayer asking God to grant them peace and comfort. Our homebound members now include Pat Churchill, Margie Derr, as well as Ken and Betty Kitzmann. Bette Hand still resides as Brookside while Carol Anderson is at Curry Manor. Esther Johnson is a private foster care home. Once again, phone calls or notes are requested for each of our shut ins. They truly appreciate hearing from not only old friends but new ones as well. We have a number of members that continue to be in need of prayers for a variety of reasons. God knows their needs. Please remember Libby Mizell, Gene Kemp, Sara Kingston, Beverly Kiepert, Alyce Kennedy, Ken Hand Sr., June Zehe, Leon Hambrick, Tom Murray, Jennifer Young, Jan Mia and the Kuester family. Prayer shawls are still available to give to a person in need or to commemorate a special occasion. The Prayer Shawls are available to the left of the fireplace and can be given by anyone. If you have questions or concerns please contact Lynn Mathweg at Page 2
3 Thanks everyone that was involved whether you brought supplies or you served the week of VBS! A huge thank you to everyone who helped make VBS a smashing success! With your time, donations, and support, we reached over 200 children each day with the good news of Jesus! The children learned that Jesus gives us hope, courage, direction, love, and power - good news! VBS is a wonderful opportunity for our congregation to be a mission field in Roseburg. Thank you! -Casey DeGroot Destination devotions Planning a summer trip? Take along a Scripture passage befitting your vacation to use for devotions and prayer time (all NIV below): In the mountains: The mountains and hills will burst into song before you (Isaiah 55:12). At a lake, perhaps on a fishing trip: They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will send you out to fish for people (Matthew 4:18-19). Near an ocean or river: Let the sea resound let the rivers clap their hands (Psalm 98:7-8). In the desert: They looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the LORD appearing in the cloud (Exodus 16:10). In the woods: Blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the LORD. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season (Psalm 1:1-3). In the flatlands: My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me. I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest (John 4:34-35). On a staycation close to home: Love the LORD your God. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:5-9). Page 3
4 St. Paul Lutheran Church and School Elder Meeting Minutes June 9, 2016 Present: Cory Fitzsimmons, David Weir, Phil Hu, Andrew Farhat July 14, 2016, 6:15 PM, Library Next meeting: I. Approval of Minutes The minutes from the May meeting were approved as distributed. II. Prayer Pastor Andrew opened the meeting with prayer and asked the Holy Spirit to fill their minds and hearts and turn their wills towards Him. III. Cohabitation Policy After months of deliberation, the Elders landed with the following cohabitation policy. First, we want to distribute the relevant passages of Scripture that deal with marriage, fornication, holiness, repentance, communion, salvation, and witness to the couple. After hearing the Word of God, we are hoping they will either make the decision to: 1) Move out and live separately or 2) Get married via a small ceremony and/or with the court and do the big ceremony and reception at a later date. If the couple chooses not to do either one, then they would be put on the minor ban from communion until they were married. We believe that both options demonstrate penitence and repentance. Repentance means turning from sin and not continually living in it. Jesus forgives sin and then says: Go and sin no more (John 5:14; 8:11). IV. 8:30 Worship Service Progress Pastor Andrew shared with the Elders that Ruth would be going back to playing the organ twice a month beginning in July and the early service worship team would also play twice/month. V. Confirmation Practice Pastor Andrew brought up the possibility of having a worship attendance requirement for all who are in confirmation. The Elders agreed that it would be best if we kept the door open in relationships regardless of worship attendance. VI. Language of Confession of Sins Pastor Andrew brought up the possibility of changing the language of the confession of sins during the worship service to make it more accessible, personal, and meaningful. The Elders believed that our current language was still accessible and people can make it personal if they tune in. No changes were made. VII. Tithe The Elders decided to give Concordia Seminary $792 for the matching fund capital campaign. Page 4
