3 Upcoming in Worship Join us on March 6th, 6p at THE PARISH as we gather to being our Lenten journey. This service will be combined with 1st United Methodist Church, and will feature children, youth and adults. A nursery is offered and we hope all of you will join us for the unique event. CCF (our kids program) will be joining us and UCYF (our youth program) will be asked to join us, and following the service will head to the Youth Center for dinner and some fellowship. Jesus didn t stay in one place for long. His earthly ministry was one of moving from one place and encounter to the next. He also moved through every part of the human experience, encountering everything from temptation, to joy, to suffering and even death. This worship series helps us reclaim the movement of Jesus ministry from temptation to condemnation, through his teaching and miracles and finally through the story of his death and resurrection. As we encounter the life and ministry of Jesus, we cannot stay the same. We ourselves are moved to grow and change as followers of the gospel way. Don t miss Rev. Megan A. Peglar in our pulpit to launch our Lenten series on March 10th. Rev. Peglar is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a proud graduate of Texas Christian University and Brite Divinity School. She has served churches in Euless, Kansas City, and Fort Worth. She is now on staff at Brite Divinity School. As a preacher, keynoter, retreat leader, and writer, Megan shares her intuitive, prophetic, and compassionate voice to convey that God's love is real and transformative. THE GIFT OF FREEDOM: Celebrating Seder, March 20th, 6pm Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. - 2 Cor. 3:17 Children ask questions. And one of the most common questions asked is WHY? It is their way of making sense of the world we live in. In the religious realm, the Passover celebration encourages us all to ask faith questions and learn by example. Come together for a special fellowship meal event as we learn more about the Seder s rich tradition. Special guest psalmist RICHARD BRUXVOORT-COLLIGAN will be here to sing and pray with us in a special liturgy. Be on the lookout for how you can help from the Nurture Committee in the coming days!

4 THOUGHTS In addition to our regular Sunday worship services we have two other very special worship opportunities in March. The Ash Wednesday service will be at the Parish at 6:00 on Wednesday, March 6. Together with FUMC we will begin our Lenten season that evening. Consider these words from Joel 2:13 as you prepare: Return to the Lord, your God, who is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. The second special opportunity for worship will be at 6:00 on Wednesday, March 20, in the Parish Fellowship Hall. At this time we will have a Seder meal with a Psalmist, and our youth will be joining us and participating in the program. It promises to be an educational and informative evening. Tune up your voices and get ready to sing Shine, Jesus, Shine on Sunday, March 3 as we conclude the liturgical season of Epiphany. Throughout the season Suzanne has focused on the need and the opportunity for each of us to bring light and love into the world. Perhaps it could be helpful to have these printed words to help us remember. Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father s glory; Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. You may also obtain a paper copy by contacting the church office. The proposed document will be reviewed by the Parish for 60 days, which began on February 18, The Parish Council will vote on the approval of the unification documents at the end of the 60 day period. If you have questions or concerns, please contact a member of Parish Council.

7 MDO Xtreme Dear Parish Congregation, Thank you for partnering with us for our 2019 Mother -Son Superhero Bash & Father-Daughter Boots & Bows Dance. Your generosity contributing greatly to the success of our events! All monies raised from these events will fund MDO Xtreme Preschool s operating costs and scholarship fund. Over 225 children and adults in our community were able to enjoy time together building positive relationships and creating memories. We appreciate you! MDO Xtreme Preschool Staff & Students February s curriculum was focused on Kings & Queens, Valentines, leadership, and wacky Dr. Suess week! We had so much fun creating crowns to wear, excavating jewels from ice castles, painting with chocolate pudding, playing with rainbow colored noodles, dressing wacky and more!

10 From the desk of Rev. Dr. Suzanne Castle I ve been thinking a lot about casting stones: that pesky encounter with Jesus and the Woman where church leaders are ready to throw stones at her because of her lifestyle. And Jesus says to them to go ahead and throw a stone, as long as there is no sin of any kind in their own life. Oh, how church systems and leaders routinely love to be the stone-thrower (and not the David-defeating-a-Giant-kind.) Church schisms (splits) are usually thought about as something that happened long, long ago in another realm of church. But the sad truth is, that we haven t learned very much about schisms and their effect on members, how the world views God and how the church does the work being the hands and feet of Jesus. A brief timeline: However, it didn t stop with the Reformation and its many manifestations. In fact, today, Protestant denominations are splitting regularly. The Presbyterians have split several times, and currently have 2 major branches, the latest split happening in 2010 over who is welcome, and one branch refuses to ordain women. The Episcopalians also have a recent break up. And now there are the Anglicans (yes, the same ones from the days of King Henry VIII) and the Episcopal Church USA. Their splits have made national news and began in earnest in 2003, again, over issues of welcome. The Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) at a General Assembly in Tulsa, 1991, made national headlines, too, when one of the nominees for the General Minister and President refused to make conservative stands on many issues and was voted down. Out of this vote, the conservative voice of the Disciples, called DISCIPLE RENEWAL, left the denomination. And just a few days ago, the United Methodist Church voted to move forward on a plan that keeps people from feeling welcome in their denomination. The Methodists are 3% of professing Christians in the USA. There is an awful lot of stone throwing, isn t there? Our vision statement for The Parish states: We believe in loving God and our neighbor as ourselves (see Mark 12:28-34) as we provide for the least of these (see Matthew 25:35-36). Those very words assume that there are no stones in sight and that our primary concern is whether or not we are loving God and neighbor. This kind of love assume that the table is large enough to accommodate all of us, and that we will always find a chair for those that want a changed life. What a welcoming place we share at The Parish. No stones required.
