1 From the Pastor's Desk I recently attended the Festival of Homiletics in Denver. Hundreds of pastors from many denominations gathered to hear sermons and lectures about the art of preaching. Preaching is different than a lecture. A lecture s goal is to teach and give knowledge. Sometimes I feel like my Sunday sermon is more like a lecture. But when I do it well, the sermon will lift or inspire you. I think that means you will be moved, to action or feel closer to God. That is what I strive for and I hope the Holy Spirit will help. The festival had three venues, all churches in downtown Denver. I heard two sermons and two lectures each day and had opportunity to spend time with fellow pastors in fellowship and discussion. The preachers were the best of the best bringing their best. Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry, an African American preacher made us laugh and cry. Craig Barnes, the president of Princeton Theological Seminary, could rightly be described as the pastor s pastor. He encouraged us to be hopeful and courageous in our preaching. While we studied how to craft a better sermon and give ourselves over to the Holy Spirit, it occurred to me there is another participant in the sermon; the hearer. So, you have a responsibility to show up, listen, and open up your heart and mind. It is a collaborative effort between you, me, and Holy Spirit. I will see you in worship. I very much enjoyed the Festival of Homiletics. Thank you for providing the opportunity. God Bless You, Pastor Brian REMINDER Worship/Picnic in the Park 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 21st Zearing Park shelter INSIDE THIS MONTH'S "LIGHT" p.2 Notes from the Session p.3 Church member "Spotlight" p.4 Our Daily Bread, Thinking of the Homebound p.5 June calendar p. 6 In honor of Father's Day - "A Message From God to You"
2 The Session met on April 21st for a regularly scheduled meeting. The meeting opened with prayer and the minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer's report were approved as written. 38 persons were served communion on April 6th. One person received home communion that afternoon. Pastor Brian said he was getting a lot of phone calls from people asking for money for utilities since Tri-County is out of funds for the fiscal year. He met with Carmi Bohnsack about her baptism and with Tim Bauer and Kathy Costerisan about their wedding plans. Church services at Zearing Park will be at 10:30 instead of the summer worship hours of 9:30. Presbyterian Women asked that the men of the church assist with pouring drinks and cleaning up at the annual Mother/Daughter/Friend dinner on May 6th. The quarterly report of the church's investments was received and accepted. The report of the Pastor evaluation was reviewed by the session members. Pastor Brian was asked to visit more members in their homes and he added that he felt that the church needed to establish a vision due to the decrease in membership and attendance at Sunday services. The Evangelism and Mission Committee encourage all church members to invite friends to the Church service at Zearing Park on the 21st of June. It is hoped that the insurance money due from the damage to the parking lot, sidewalks and lawn can be used to resurface the parking lot. Other improvements to be done were listed. There will be no graduation Sunday since the two 2015 college graduates will not be in town on that Sunday. May 17th is the last day of Sunday School until fall. June 12th is the day our church will cook and serve for Lunch in the Park. There will be no auction at the Ice Cream Social on August 8th. No totals have been received from our church's collection for One Great Hour of Sharing. There are no customers at the present time for our Shopping service. The Evangelism and Mission Committee encourage all church members to invite friends to the Church service at Zearing Park on the 21st of June. At the last Presbytery meeting in Crystal Lake a speaker talked about the need for a paradigm shift in the direction of the Presbyterian church as the times change. The meeting adjoined with all reciting the Lord's. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 320 PARK AVE EAST PRINCETON, IL fpcpton@frontier.com Phone: (815)

4 FROM "OUR DAILY BREAD" Do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Hebrews 13:16 Lee Geysbeek of Compassion International told about a woman who had the opportunity to travel to a distant land to visit the child she sponsored. She decided to take the child, who was living in abject poverty, to a restaurant. The boy ordered a hamburger, and the sponsor ordered a salad. When the food came to the table, the boy, who assuredly had never had such a meal in his life, surveyed the scene. He looked at his huge hamburger and over at his sponsor s small salad. Then he took his knife and cut the burger in half, offered it to his sponsor, rubbed his tummy, and asked, Hungry? A child who had next to nothing his whole life was willing to share half of what he had with someone he thought might need more. This child can be a good reminder the next time we meet someone in physical, emotional, or spiritual need. As followers of Jesus, our faith in Him should be mirrored through our actions (James 2:17). We encounter people in need every day. Some around the globe, some simply around the corner. Some in need of a warm meal, others a kind word. What a difference followers of Christ, who have experienced His love, could make by doing good and sharing (Heb. 13:16). Today, Lord, help me see beyond my own problems to the needs of others. Guide my hand to give instead of get, to offer instead of ask, and to bless instead of seeking blessings. May Your name be honored. Pick up your free copy of "Our Daily Bread" in the Narthex! "If you are thinking of someone today, say a prayer for them because you never know what they might be going through." (Thanks to Ron & Marlene Gibson for sharing!)
