Westminster Stories Westminster Presbyterian church August 2015 Issue #539 Being a Part of Each Other May the Lord bless you and keep you; May the Lord be kind and gracious to you; May the Lord s face shine upon you; And may the Lord our God be with you this day and forevermore! As one might expect, the news of my receiving a call to serve another congregation has been met with some disappointment, sadness, and maybe even a sense of betrayal. This is a normal reaction to hearing that a Pastor who has served you these past nine years is leaving. I guess that is a better response than if people were rejoicing and dancing in the aisles singing Ding, Dong, the Wicked Witch is dead! I too have mixed feelings about my coming departure. There is excitement about the next call but also a very deep sadness about ending a relationship I have cherished for so many years. I have walked with you through good times and bad; through times of struggle and times of celebration; through births, deaths, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. While I am leaving, each and every one of you will always be a part of me in ways I cannot express without shedding a tear or two. On Sunday, August 30, following worship, at my request the congregation will ask the Presbytery to dissolve the Pastoral relationship. (This date is different from the letter I sent out by recommendation of the Presbytery that we separate this action of the congregation from the celebration of our ministry together.) While the official date of the ending of this relationship will be September 15, I will be preaching Sunday, September 20, and we will gather after worship for fellowship and festivities. It is my hope this last Sunday is less about me and more about giving thanks to God for the grace we have experienced together for so many years. One of the more difficult things in a normal Pastoral transition is that I have a code of ethics guiding this separation. This means I cannot return to do weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc. There are very good reasons for this in that your next pastor (whether interim or Called and Installed) needs to have the space to become your Pastor. It is incumbent upon me to hold to these ethics to ensure a smooth transition for you. While it may seem heartless, I want you to know you will always be a part of my heart! As these final weeks unfold, and I begin to say goodbye to each and every one of you, I cannot adequately express the love I feel for this congregation. Westminster is a vital and healthy community whose future is in God s hands and not mine. For what seems only a little while, I had the gift of being your Pastor. I will hold that gift close to my heart for the rest of my life. 2 Youth Mission Trip Reflections Five Westminster members went to Chicago for a Mission Trip with DOOR on June 28-July 3. DOOR is an organization that hosts mission groups year round, with semester and summer long internships as well as week and weekend group visits. Because of their yearround presence, DOOR has many strong relationships with a variety of service organizations and non-profits in Chicago and we were able to go and experience ministry in four different settings during the week. Here are reflections from two of our participants: Anna Franklin: One of the best parts of experiencing a youth mission trip is seeing how just a small handful of people can help shape a community. In less than a week we chopped six boxes of dinner meat for hungry homeless people, weeded a garden for hours, listened to the stories of women with memory problems while playing bingo, and put together 765 packages of food that will be shipped to those who need it. But my favorite part was seeing all the smiles and love around me that formed a flawed but beautiful environment. This week I grew alongside my fellow youth workers as we connected in faithful and personal ways. I learned that we cannot change everything at once; we cannot satisfy everyone. God does not expect perfection, but the 2015 youth mission trip was perfect in every sense of the word! P.S. Thank you youth leaders! Rosalyn Johnson: I vividly remember the site leader, Andrea, telling us we can t all be heroes. Now that sounded kind of weird coming from her, but I think I figured it out. I think she meant that just because we can t see the impact doesn t mean it s not there. We can t all be Superman fighting the monster of poverty downtown with all the news helicopters. Sometimes we have to just do what we can. Whether that is serving at the shelter or just giving the guy sitting on the street your change. We all have to play a part big or small. We can do this. What Happened in the Building This Summer? John Tarr Summer has been a busy time for outside groups using our building. Bookended by the Madinah Academy we have been busy with the Girls Rock Camp of Madison, Kaleidoscope Children s Art program, MATC painting classes, a Nakoma Centennial meeting, a Girl Scout Troop working with the Madison Police Canine Unit, Doin R Thing had a Prom night, Vacation Bible School and Thoreau Teacher training. To see more on the Girls Scouts and the Canine Unit go to: -department-k9-unit-trains-with-brownietroop/ It seems like only days since we said see you in the fall to the teachers, students and staff of the Madinah Academy and now it is almost fall and we are preparing for them to come back. This year they are adding a 5 th grade class allowing their students to transition into public school at the Middle School level. To accomplish this they will be using room 11 upstairs. Welcome back to everyone this fall. Page 2

Centennial Celebration This is an exciting time for Westminster as we celebrate our one hundredth anniversary. A small task force has been planning this celebration for a number of months and has identified Hebrews 12:1 as the theme for the year. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Each month we will celebrate a particular decade in Westminster s past, highlighting what was going on in the world at that time and what was happening at Westminster. We will highlight heroes of the faith in their particular decades including Walter Rasuchenbush (Social Gospel reformer), Dietrich Bonhoeffer, C.S. Lewis and Frederich Beuchner. Our worship will incorporate different elements from particular decades including Confessions, prayers, and liturgies. September October November December January February March April May June Each month we will spend an evening showing a movie from each decade for your enjoyment. There will be popcorn and a chance to see many classic movies reflective of the times they were made. Keep an eye out for the dates and times of these movies and join us for this fellowship event. Joint Choir Performance: Sunday, November 1 The two choirs of Westminster and Covenant will do a special performance of choral music for all to enjoy. Centennial Conference: March 12, 2016 There will be a special conference on Interfaith Dialogue and Education where Christine Hong will be presenting ideas on how we of different faiths can work together to ensure education for all of God s children. A panel of local religious leaders will participate and respond to the ideas and possibilities of people of faith in education. Heroes of the Faith Musical: Spring 2016 Westminster members of all ages will present a musical for everyone to enjoy in this lighthearted and funny celebration of heroes from the Bible. Centennial Worship and Celebration: Sunday, June 5, 2016 Everything has led to this big party where we will thank God for God s faithfulness to Westminster for the last one hundred years. This will include a special anthem written by Will Todd and sung by our choir for this celebration. Past ministers and former members will join us as we worship together. Following worship, we will gather at a local park to celebrate together as we finish off the Centennial year. Issue #539 August 2015 Page 3

2015 Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women SHARING THE JOY OF THE 2015 CHURCH- WIDE GATHERING OF PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN As Ruth Hein, Susan Becker, Kathy Granquist, and her friend (Diane Kearney) from New Jersey rode along the beautiful Mississippi River scenic drive to Minneapolis, they were all very enthused about going to the Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women and soon discovered what a fantastic experience it would be. What a beautiful sea of faces! exclaimed Shelda Wills, Gathering Chair, as she welcomed the rows of women that numbered dozens of international guests from 15 countries and more than 15,000 Presbyterian women from all over the United States. During the evening Gathering, participants prayed, May we who have been brought here from across the globe declare that we are called by you, O God, to be united together as One Body, One Spirit. And may the God who is above us, the Christ who is in front of us, and the Holy Spirit who is within us, show us the way. For Ruth, that prayer set the tone for the gathering. Kathy was wowed that there was a large percentage of younger women, ensuring the future of this great community of One Body and One Spirit energetically making a difference in the lives of people wherever needed. Each evening and morning (6 in all) we had a 2 -hour plenary (gathering) of everyone who attended in the Hyatt auditorium, which provided 4 large screens, a fantastic sound system and a variety of modern inspirational music. The first outstanding speaker, Alika Galloway, told us about her small Kwanzaa Community Church. Specifically, its Northside Women s Space is a safe place of respite, healing and recovery for those exploited by sex trafficking and HIV/AIDS. Alika is the seed for a task force that has developed all across the Twin Cities. Her stories of radical love brought the audience to tears, laughter and amazing hope. In addition to the plenaries, we were offered 40 classes (yes!) of which we could choose 6 to attend. During a presentation on Alzheimer s, Kathy learned that body language is most important. Kathy was especially intrigued by a slide presentation depicting North Koreans in a thriving, healthy, gardening environment. The speaker, Piju Kim Joo, has both U.S. and North Korean passports. Ruth enjoyed Anne Lamott s quote laughter is carbonated holiness and the presentation, Laughter s Healing Art. The speaker affirmed, It s okay for you to laugh in church. A further meaningful quote from the newly elected Churchwide moderator was Presbyterian Women is a strong organization and a strong leader in the church. It is also a strong partner in ministry, initiating many programs that are now shared throughout the church. My hope is we will expand our partnerships within the church finding new opportunities for shared ministry Find your passion for advocacy and mission and use that passion to make a difference. From September 2015 through May 2016, Circles will be using a titled Come to the Waters. There are 800 references to water in the Bible. The study leader focuses on physical/spiritual dehydration, modern realities related to water and the connection between water and spirit as some of the themes. Watch for more details about Westminster Presbyterian Women s Circles next month. Written by: Kathy Granquist and Ruth Hein Page 4

Mission Updates Thoreau School Supply Drive: August 2-27 Our annual School Supply drive for Thoreau Elementary is underway! We will collect supplies through the final night of VBS on August 27. Supply lists for Thoreau are available in the Narthex and can also be found at most local stores that sell supplies. You can also write a check to Westminster with school supplies written on the memo line. Funds donated will be used in September to buy what supplies are still needed once the school year is underway. Just Bakery Sales: Starts September 13 We are increasing our support of Just Bakery, a program of Madison Area Urban Ministry, which gives training and work experience to those coming out of prison. We ve purchased breads and baked good from Just Bakery in the past for Easter Breakfast or communion. Starting September 13, we will have monthly bake sales following worship where you can purchase directly from Just Bakery. Men s Shelter Cooking and Serving We are continuing our long-standing support of Porchlight Men s Shelter by providing 18 meals a year. If you are interested in helping to cook or serve, please contact Jeff or Sara Hayes or sign up on the Local Mission Board across from the upstairs kitchen. Our fall service dates for breakfast are: Sept. 12, Oct. 10, and Nov. 14. We will provide dinner on Oct. 9. 6 Education Updates Westminster Education Programs Education is an important part of our lives and ministry for all ages at Westminster. Our 2015/16 year will kickoff on Rally Day, September 13. If you have any questions about an education program, contact Pastor Kathleen. Here is what you can look forward to this year: SUNDAY PROGRAMS 9 th Hour Kids: Sundays, 9-10am Our 9 th Hour Kids program on Sunday mornings will be following a new program developed by the national Presbyterian Church called Growing in Grace & Gratitude. This will continue to be a multi-age group for kids 3 years- 5 th grade. As we move through the year, kids will be encouraged to recognize God s Grace in the world around us and to respond with Gratitude as we explore these themes from the Bible through music, stories, games and crafts. Children s Worship: Sundays, during 2 nd half of 10:15am Worship Our Children s Worship program will continue to run in two groups, creatively called the younger and older. Younger Children s Worship is for kids ages 3 years-1 st grade. This program will continue to meet in Room 12 led by Carl Martin. Older Children s Worship is for kids in grades 2-5. This group will meet in the Conference Room this year and explore the Bible with a new curriculum, Deep Blue Kids, which involves videos and other creative ways to explore the Bible. Deep Blue Kids also has an app for at-home follow up. Youth Lunch: Sundays, 11:30am-1pm All youth grades 6-12 are invited to come to the Youth Suite after worship for lunch and conversation. Adult Education: Sundays, 9-10am All adults are invited to participate in a rotating series of classes for Adult Education on Sundays this year. In September, our Adult Education will focus on the history of Westminster and the Nakoma neighborhood as both our congregation and neighborhood are celebrating 100 years in In October and November, we ll be focusing on issues around death and legacy with presentations and conversations around issues including: creating a living will, making end of life decisions and setting up financial gifts. WEEKDAY PROGRAMS Breakfast : Tuesdays, 8:30-9:30am Every Tuesday morning a group meets at Copper Top restaurant (on Whitney by Vitense Golfland) for. New participants are always welcome! Prophets: Tuesdays, 4-5:15pm A large section of the Old Testament is devoted to the stories and words of the Prophets. Who are these prophets? What was going on in the world around them as they spoke? How do their words continue to speak to us today? These questions and others will frame this intensive (you ll have reading assignments between classes) meeting on Tuesday Page 6

Education Updates afternoons and led by Pastor Kathleen. Classes run September 15th through November 3rd (note: class will not be held on October 13.) Thursday Morning Group: Thursdays, 9:30-11:30am This group meets for discussion and fellowship throughout the school year. Topics will vary as determined by the group with a variety of studies including Bible stories, books and current events. Thoreau Book Drive a Success! On behalf of Thoreau School, I want to thank our friends at Westminster Presbyterian Church for the fantastic book drive! We were overwhelmed by your generosity! We sorted the books and divided them among the 41 families that we served in our Summer Reading Program. This is the 2nd year of our program. Our goal is to provide reading materials and three teacher home visits to our struggling readers. The ultimate goal is to prevent summer slide and reduce the achievement gap by encouraging children to keep reading all summer. Many children don't have books in their home and live too far from the library to expediently take the bus. This year, with your donated books and monetary support, we were able to serve 41 students and bring books to their siblings, both young and old! We feel great about this endeavor to provide books to children is one of the best things anyone can do to encourage school success. Thank you so much for everything. Please know that your efforts made a huge difference in the lives of Thoreau students and their siblings! Vacation Bible School G-Force: God s Love in Action August 24-27, 5:30-7:45pm All kids age 2-6 th grade are invited to take part in an exploration of God s love and the ways we put it in action! The program starts with dinner, followed by music time, crafts, games and a story. On Thursday, August 27, we ll wrap up with an ice cream social and sharing about what we learned. The program for 5 th -6 th graders will have a slight variation with a greater emphasis on storytelling and group building. Registrations forms are available in the Narthex and the Westminster website. For questions, contact Pastor Kathleen. Friends are welcome; pass the word around! Vacation Bible School Volunteers We have a great leadership team for VBS this year but we ll need some helpers! Look at the Kiosk in the Narthex for sign-up sheets. Helpers are needed for 1-4 nights of VBS. Our remaining needs at this time are for storytellers and kitchen assistants. VBS Ice Cream Social, Thursday, August 27 at 7pm We ll be wrapping up Vacation Bible School with an ice cream social and a time for sharing. Please come at 7pm to hear the kids sing and share what they ve learned during Vacation Bible School, plus you ll get an ice cream sundae! It will be a great evening of fellowship and fun! This will also be the last time to bring in school supplies for Thoreau. Best, Kelly McCann Issue #539 August 2015 Page 7

2015 Washington Island Forum with John Bell REAPPROPRIATING THE WORD We Forum participants assembled on the first morning of the Conference in the large auditorium of the newly built Trueblood Performing Arts Center on Washington Island. A slender, tall, silver-haired man wearing green pants, an unbuttoned, striped, short-sleeved shirt over a lavender tee strolled barefooted onto the stage and began singing a simple tune, gesturing us to join in. So began each of the next three mornings worship services and presentation by John Bell of the Iona Community in Scotland. He was a captivating speaker and storyteller with a strong Scottish accent and a method of making everyone participate in the singing and the responsive prayer readings of his own composing. They were like simple modern day psalm paraphrases, yet they expressed so directly and sincerely our own everyday experience.* Then followed John Bell s lecture, or presentation for the day, on the variety of literature (different genres) in the Bible, with excerpted examples on handout sheets. He distinguished between true stories and stories containing truths about God and Creation, as in Adam & Eve s temptation, the Tower of Babel, the Law (Ten Commandments and reasons for keeping the Sabbath), Jesus miracles Jesus uses no one technique God is the agent and Jesus is the agent of God s transforming love; heroes such as David and Goliath (youthful imagination uses a slingshot instead of wearing Saul s heavy armor); the story of Jepthah s stubborn adherence to his reckless vow, which illustrates unhealthy fundamentalism; asked us to decide whether we d tell children the story of the Tyrant King Eglon s bloody end; and pointed out the discrepancy between huge numbers of Biblical women, whose roles are still ignored in the Lectionary. He spoke of the importance of Old People and how God chose aged people to do God's work -- Sarah and Abraham; Elizabeth and Zachariah. He had us imagine Scriptural characters and compare unconventional photos of modern people. All this was related within the context of engaging personal anecdotes. Finally, how can we recognize the voice of God in our lives if we haven t absorbed it from Biblical examples? Bell cites an author, Christian Smith, who describes modern spirituality/religion as moralistic therapeutic Deism which diminishes God to fit someone s desires. Here are two amusing retellings: When the Serpent was temping Adam and Eve in the Garden, perhaps it thought Eve might be a better conversationalist and so addressed her, but Adam was right there listening. (Adam means earthling not male per se.) Then, when God questions them, Eve tells it straight but Adam embellishes by blaming Eve and, indirectly, God also this woman whom you gave me. When John Bell preached at the evensong service in Westminster Abbey, he noted that the morning reading from Exodus was on Moses early life and the evening reading was on Moses as an adult at the burning bush. He observed, Ladies and gentlemen, I am sorry to report that somewhere between the morning and evening services five Middle Eastern women went missing in this cathedral! In addition to delicious refreshment breaks before the gathering and during intermission, there were optional afternoon sessions where John Bell answered questions. We also enjoyed the whole Washington Island experience including: the low-key, rustic setting; exploring beaches and historic spots on the island; and, an evening cruise on the crystal clear waters Page 8

of northern Lake Michigan. * A number of John Bell's compositions are in our hymnal and the worship material for the forum came from his forthcoming A Wee Worship Book, c Wild Goose Resource Group, Iona Community, Glasgow G2 3DH, Scotland, or published and distributed by GIA Publications, Inc., 7404 S. Mason Ave., Chicago, IL 60638, and in a forthcoming Iona Abbey Worship Book. Chancel Choir Resumes Sing the Lord s Song with Us! The Westminster Chancel Choir will officially kickoff of its season on Wednesday, September 9th. All those interested in participating in the Choir s music ministry are encouraged to attend, especially as we begin the celebration of Westminster's Centennial year! experience is made greater. Each choir member is valued for the unique gifts they contribute to the ensemble. Some bring outstanding voices or great musicianship. Others bring equally valued gifts like leadership, humor and warmth. The Chancel Choir is a community of faith in which singers develop all the gifts they have to offer. The basic requirements are the ability to sing in tune and hold, in part, enthusiasm for the Choir s ministry, willingness to learn and grow and a focused commitment to offering one s very best at weekly rehearsals and in Sunday worship. For more information about the Choir s ministry, please contact Joe Chrisman, Minister of Music, at or speak with any current choir member. We hope to see you, and hear you, at the kickoff and rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. on September 9th! From September through June 2016, the Chancel Choir rehearses each Wednesday evening from 7:30pm to 9:00pm in preparation for leadership in worship on a weekly basis. Through its Christ-centered approach to worship leadership, the Choir plays a central leadership role in this congregation s worship life and offers its members an opportunity to respond to God s call to be effective stewards of their music talents. If you are sensing a call from God to serve in the music ministry of Westminster but are unsure how to respond, why not give the Choir a try during these months before Christmas? The Chancel Choir ministers within itself by growing individuals, at whatever level of musical ability or faith formation, with the help of the whole ensemble. The Chancel Choir ministers to the congregation not through individual voices, but through its collective efforts in worship leadership. In this way, each singer gives what they can and the whole of the worship Issue #539 August 2015 Page 9

Praying Through God s Word Be a rainbow in someone else s cloud. Maya Angelou Please remember these members and friends in prayer: Vern Forsberg Ed & Liba Daub Betty Fox Jim Gainey May Peters Toni Vial Sally Forsberg Petie Rudy Bob Watson Marian Rohde Session Highlights Session took a summer break in June to accommodate member s vacation schedules. The July 27 meeting was held as scheduled. At that meeting, the School Supply drive for Thoreau Elementary was approved along with new education curriculum Deep Blue Kids for Older Children s Worship and Echo the Story for youth. The Mission Committee reported on distribution of $9,500, leaving $2,400 in local funds for allocation, $2,500 to be used globally and $1,500 to meet emerging needs through the end of the year. Personnel Committee circulated and approved a letter of employment offered to Sarah Gorke. She accepted the Office Manager position and will start on September 1. Sarah will be scheduled to work 30 hours per week. Stewardship Committee outlined a schedule for preparing the 2016 budget and committees are working on their requests. John Knox Presbytery is holding an evening meeting on Tuesday, August 18th. Covenant is the Madison video conferencing site and Westminster Deacons will arrange dinner for those in attendance. Elders Agnes Dako and Jeff Hayes volunteered to represent Westminster. Session held a special meeting on Thursday, August 6th at Alex's request to respond to his acceptance of a Call to Hartland Presbyterian Church in Iowa. Chaz Ruak, John Knox Executive Presbyter, was present to help explain the regular steps a congregation takes as a pastor moves to a new Call. Session s first step is to call a meeting of the congregation to "concur with Alex's request for the Presbytery to dissolve the pastoral relationship with Westminster Presbyterian Church." That meeting will be held after the worship service on August 30. We will have an opportunity to celebrate Alex s ministry with us over the last nine years on September 20th after worship. Worship Committee will be organizing pulpit supply -- Kathleen will preach on September 27 and Chaz Ruak will be here for World Communion Sunday on October 4. Session will hire an interim pastor to be head of staff and guide us through the search for a new pastor, which normally takes about one year. The meeting closed with a circle of joys and concerns and appreciation for Alex's ministry at Westminster. Session will meet on August 31 for its regular stated meeting. Page 10
