1 Trinity Presbyterian Church 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise ID BETTER TOGETHER! I like seeing everybody in worship. I ve met some new people and made some new friends. The worship area feels fuller. There seems to be more energy and excitement in worship. These are some of the things overheard during this Summer s Single Family Service. Some tears were spotted as people were emotionally moved by the service. I was so touched that I couldn t even finish singing the song, one person said. Of course there were other voices talking about things being too loud or too quiet, to fast or slow, too complicated or too simple, too long or too short, too familiar or too unfamiliar. In many respects in was a very Brady summer. Throughout it all our leadership team, the Session, attended worship, listened, talked with people, and prayed. When the Session approved going to a single service for the summer it saw the summer as a trial for Trinity to position itself to minister more effectively in the 21 st Century. At the recent Session meeting, someone said, What worked in business in 1904, 1950, or even in 1980 does not work in To be successful today, a business needs to reinvent itself, perhaps this is true for Trinity. Several years ago, the Session adopted a new Mission and Vision Statement to guide Trinity as it seeks to be the church of the 21 st century. One of the core values in that Mission and Vision statement is, Together we cherish the image of God in all people, everywhere, consequently; we seek to be as multigenerational and as inclusive as Jesus in community. The single summer service was a strategic move towards multigenerational ministry and outreach. When guests arrive in worship, they first look around to see if there is anyone there like him or herself. A truly multigenerational and inclusive environment ensures someone like themself is there who might help them feel at home, and that this could be the faith community for them. Having shifted through feedback and a season of prayer, our Leadership Team designated this fall as a time of reinvention for Trinity Presbyterian Church. In order to continue to grow our congregation deep and wide on August 22, our Session voted to go to a single worship service beginning Sept. 11 th. The Session s desire is that the worship service continue its dynamic format, incorporating a variety of worship elements pulled from our deep roots and reaching into new and more creative ways to help our congregation and guests fully encounter the grace of God, not only for the generations present, but for the generations to come. Musically, the service will reflect the generations present as well as generations yet to arrive. The Session s desire is for our various musical entities to combine and collaborate, where ever and whenever possible. The goal musically is synergy not schism. Because music is a huge part of the worship experience, the Session noted that all the music this summer was new music to someone and there was a need to teach these new songs to the Single Service congregation. We can all expect songs during one worship service to reappear in others as we all learn them together. Together is the key word. We are better together. The challenge as always in a transition like this is for us all to do what is needed to continue to better together.

2 Musings... By Pastor Joe How to Make Stuff, was the title of the article. It was about the DIY revolution. Having spent the last 5 months building a variation of a 1957Gibson Les Paul, with the clear coat still drying after a month, I was intrigued. As the article stated, Used to be that a home workshop project began with a jigsaw, some screws and a bottle of wood glue. Now it has gone digital. People are now designing and turning out custom furniture and bike parts in their garage. Looks like birdhouse projects really are kid s stuff. This DIY revolution is one more confirmation of the changes that are taking place even in the garage workshop, and it is not a fad. What used to be reserved for Geekdom, is now at everyone s fingertips. I know that there are those out there who are drooling for the return of jigsaws, screws, and wood glue. However, paradigm shifts are not reversible. Unless you are Amish, horse and buggies are not your primary mode of daily transportation. As the bumper stick said, Shifts Happen. Churches and even the Christian faith itself have undergone paradigm shifts. Does anyone remember not being allowed to play cards? Someone shared with me the other day that when they grew up- if you clapped on the offbeat it was of the devil. It is possible to hide one s head in the sand and pretend that nothing has changed. It is also possible to see these shifts as Spirit led, and that God maybe doing something different to reach different folks. SUNDAY SCHOOL In Sunday School this fall, we will be offering three different age groups (Preschool, Age 6-8, and Age 9-12), during our 10 a.m. service. The curriculum is from Gospel Light and your students will bring a takehome page home after Sunday School so that you can see what was discussed. We will also be providing a monthly preview of what s coming in the In Touch newsletter each month. Don t miss our Fall kickoff on Sunday, September 11. Following the service, there will be activities, refreshments & a bounce house too If any parents are interested in teaching Sunday School one or more times a month, we are always looking for more teachers. As you look into your fall activity list, I hope that you will consider involving your elementary aged children in our music and theater program. We have made a shift in age-levels again this year, to accommodate the youth in our church. Our music and theater program will consist of Kindergarten through 6th grade students. We will be meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 4:15-5:30. We will serve a snack at the beginning of our time, and then dive into our rehearsal. We will be working on a Christmas musical that we will be performing tentatively on December 11th at 3pm for our all-church music program presentation. First rehearsal begins on Wednesday, September 28th. I have the pleasure of co-directing this group with Joey Stillinger. We will be posting more information about the music in the weeks ahead! Stay tuned... As for our older thespians--we have been performing together for several years, however, many are at an age where they are becoming involved with several other activities. Youth group becomes a commitment for many, in addition to their extracurricular school activities. You will still see some involvement from this group of performers, only in smaller venues; i.e. small singing ensembles, special music and skits, as their schedules allow. It is a wonderful opportunity to continually involve some new faces--i hope that if you have not been involved with our program previously, I hope that you (or your son/daughter) will consider being involved. Please give me a call if you are interested! For more questions or information, please Kerry Calverley at ksclaverley@msn.om or you can call We hope to see you on September 28! PRAISE BAND We are looking for more people to get involved with the Worship Ministry at Trinity If you play an instrument, like to sing, or even have an interest in media and / or sound, please feel free to contact Scott Plumley for more details. 4 TRINITY TREASURES By Annette Slaybaugh The summer has flown by, and the children have had a wonderful fun filled experience. They have been on picnics, on trips to the zoo and the parks, experienced Vacation Bible School, and had some peaceful summer days to enjoy the wonderful setting that is Trinity Presbyterian Church. We were happy with our enrollment this summer, and look forward to a full center this fall. Teachers are now busy planning exciting educational learning experiences for the up-coming school year. Trinity Treasures received some wonderful news this summer. We were awarded a grant for $8,200 from IdahoSTARS to be used for staff training & development, a portable sink for the 4 yr. old classroom, child safe steps for the sinks, additional rubber mulch for the playground, and sheets for the nap mats. Our director Donna worked very hard to secure this grant. It is the second grant that we have been award- ed in the last twelve months no small accomplishment. Donna has also been working on her own continuing education. Last summer she received a scholarship to use for her CDA (child development associate) certification which she completed this spring. She received another scholarship this summer from IdahoSTARS to continue her education. Donna plans to attend the College of Southern Idaho part time and pursue her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. The advisory board is very supportive of Donna s educational goals and applauds her hard work and dedication. MISSION NEWS The group of fifteen missionary volunteers from Trinity sponsored an incredible yard sale on Saturday, August 07. The sale, which was organized and directed by Mission Committee members, yielded an amazing $1, The proceeds from the sale will help fund the Mission trip to Pachacutec, Peru and provide additional funds to the Santa Maria school in Peru. The school has been a focus of Trinity s Mission Committee since Since that time and with the help of gifts from Trinity, the school has grown in size and has expanded to include more services to local children in this rural area of Peru. The Mission Trip to Peru is scheduled from November 5 17, 2011 and includes members from Trinity and some other volunteers from various churches. The focus of the trip includes free medical care, teaching, and construction of a cement wall at the school. The Mission Team includes those with medical, teaching, and construction skills. The yard sale was an incredible success due to the efforts of several key individuals. While many Trinity members and friends donated items for the sale, Mission Committee Member Gail Kirkpatrick spearheaded the efforts for the sale. Other key members of the yard sale committee included Natalie Thatcher and Holly Badke, who put in many long hours pricing items and making signs advertising the sale. Many thanks are due to the people who contributed their skills with set up, clean up, cashiers, sales people, and those who helped assemble some of the items donated to the sale. The Mission Committee would like to thank all of those members and friends who pitched in to make this sale such a success. The revenue from this sale topped last year s sale by more than $400. All left over items were donated to the Idaho Youth Ranch and extra women s clothing was bundled up and dropped off to the Corpus Christi Day Shelter for the homeless in Boise. The Peru bound Mission Team would like to thank the many Trinity friends and members who supported this yard sale with their donations, purchases, and volunteer time. Without this volunteer support, the yard sale would not have been so successful. What was once just a vague idea in 2008 is now quickly becoming as reality as the Mission Committee sends fifteen committed Mission workers to Peru in November of Praise God from whom all blessings flow! 5 FUSED YOUTH GROUP YOUTH CALENDAR OF EVENTS Youth Group will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Eastwind. Mark you calendars for these upcoming events: Wednesday, September 7th: Fall Kickoff at Eastwind Friday, September 9th: All Night Blitz at Wahooz & Eastwind WOMEN S RETREAT By Jesse Fadel School is back in! It's official, school is here and Summer schedules are gone. We ended our Fused Youth Summer program with a day at the lake. We went wakeboarding, skiing, and swimming and it felt great to get out in the sun for one last hurray before the school year sets in. This Summer we talked about the fruits of the Spirit and how when we walk with God His Spirit in us produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control. It's God who does the work - we just need to surrender and trust in Him. Now we're heading into a brand new school year and I'm excited to see God work to produce His fruit in our lives and within our groups! We're kicking off this Fall Semester with a Back2School Bash Wahooz All-Nighter!! Friday, September 9th we're renting out Wahooz from 8pm-1am for a night filled with all you can eat pizza, unlimited games, mini-golf, gokarts, bumper boats, and laser tag!! Afterward we'll head back and spend the night at the church. This event is sponsored by LaunchPad, a local organization helping to get Christian release-time classes in the schools. We just started a Launch Pad class at Timberline High School this semester and it's going great!! The overnighter is $25 and everything is included. Bring your friends and join us September 9th & 10th for the Back2School Bash. By Lorene Rasmussen Ladies, it s time to grab your girlfriend and make plans to get away from life s delightful distractions and explore once again the significant roles you fill, whether by intentional design or fortuitous default. Have you ever wondered how Eve felt as a mother after her son, Cain, murdered his brother? Or how long it took Bathsheba to redeem her story? And what about Mary, the mother of Jesus? There is nothing more powerful than a woman with a heart for God. Retreat Speaker: Lorene Rasmussen, wife, mother, and grandmom, Lorene is a multi-talented dreamer and Vintage Visionary who takes genuine joy in living. As a life-coach, writer, and conference speaker, Lorene is an active student on the roles women have to perform throughout their life while remaining close to their Lord. Lorene has been married to Tom for 29 years, helped raise two amazing men, has two beautiful daughter-in-loves, two glorious grandchildren, and a 50-pound poodle named Emily. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Boise State and is currently training for her 5th marathon. This year s retreat is September 16th - 18th at Camp Pinewood in McCall. Cost is $125 and include all meals and lodging. For more information, please contact Margaret Mitchell at: or mamitchell75@yahoo.com Page 5
